It doesn't work like that. Taxonomy is incredibly strict, it needs to be to properly classify species. The REQUIRED features for being a mammal are warm blood, live birth, lactation, and hair. Asari don't have hair, so BAM, right off the bat, they are not mammalian. Simple as that.

So dolphins aren't mammals?

My marine biologist friend probably had a bunch of frauds for professors, then...

^ Whatever, dude. This is obviously important to you, so I'm gonna leave you to it.

I should go.

Edit: One more point: The platypus. It lays eggs, yet it's classified as a mammal. It doesn't give live birth, yet Biologists mutually agreed to classify it as a mammal. The same can be applied to an Asari.

Funny you should mention that. Another funny thing is that classification for alot of weird species like the platypus is almost constantly debated in the scientific community. It's mutually agreed by some, yes, but not nearly enough to properly cement it's place. It's the same reason Pluto is no longer a planet, but they called it such for years just for good measure while debates raged on. Stuff like that changes. The system is anything but perfect, and the platypus is the exception rather then the rule.

And yes, it is important for me. Being an environmental studies and biology major, descrepancies like the kind you brought up tend to trigger that. Hence why I corrected you.

Dolphins have a small amount of hair above their mouths which gradually gets smaller over time. It's very, very reduced, but it is not non-existant.

Try again.

And I assume you know enough about asari to know absolutely for certain they don't have any hair anywhere?

You're splitting hairs. Stop it.

Hairs. Hehe.

No, sir. That's not the type of "importance" I was talking about.

I'm talking about your devotion to your opinion on Tali's face and your insistence on insulting mine. But this has been... interesting.

So yeah. Leaving. I think I'll do that for realz this time before I unintentionally rustle any more jimmies with my opinions.

There's a big difference between an actual, real life species that needs to be dissected/observed through it's whole life in order to determine it's classification, and a fictional species where the creators and lore can tell you "They don't have hair. Period."

So yes, I can say I know enough about Asari from the books and the game to know that they don't have hair.

End of rine.

If you were offended by me calling her a facehugger, I'd suggest not being so sensitive. It was a lighthearted jest at best and a corny reference at worst, nothing more.

There's also something to be said for the fact creators of a fictional alien race don't know every little thing about biology like you apparently do.

"Hairless" is a term that can be applied to a cat with no fur, does that mean there is absolutely no hair on the animal? No. These are very general phrases and since you didn't create the lore yourself, you shouldn't assume you know every little fine detail about it.

Then again, assumptions are absolutely rife in this thread.

Show me anywhere in the lore where it says that Asari have hair, and I will eat my words. Otherwise, you have no argument and are (badly, I might add) trying to save face.

Someone sounds bitter. Perhaps it's why they can't gracefully disengage from this argument.

You have just as much of a leg to stand on as I do. There is hardly any mention of such fine details in the lore, and certainly not anything that says whether BioWare intended asari to be mammals or not. That's my point. You have no more evidence than I do. Unless you find me something - such as a scientific consultant working with BioWare that says asari indeed have no hair absolutely anywhere and aren't meant to be mammals (yes, they do have scientific consultants, aerospace engineers helped with the Normandy concepts) - I'm not going to believe you.

For now, stop assuming you know more about the asari than their own creators do. It's giving everyone a headache.

"This argument?" That was a different conversation strain you decided to inject yourself into. I wonder who is having trouble "disengaging"...

For the record, I was making a bit of a joke there. Sorry you needed me to spell it out.

False. I actually know what I'm talking about and base it on what I read, while you throw assumptions around, hence your attempted dolphin rebuttal.

If there is nowhere in the lore that says that Asari do have hair, then it is safer to assume that they don't rather then do. Even you can see the logic behind that, right? I never claimed to know more about a fictional species then the creators of it, you're trying to put words in my mouth to discredit me, and again, are doing a poor job of it.

Your 'argument' stinks of despiration and right now, I'm just continuing so I can watch you squirm. Best quit while you're behind.

I thought the photo was a joke when I first saw it lol But then it turned out to be legit.

Bioware, when did you stop caring? Was it halfway through or something...?

What really peeves me off is Tali's great long flowing hair in the picture; if you are crammed in a helmet and suit 24/7, hair gets nasty, very quickly. Even wearing a bikers helmet, it gets horrible and gross.

I wouldn't have minded if her hair was more like a yautja's or something. At least be more sensible than the long hair she has at the moment. :|

I admit I expected to see more alien face. But I think they could do better even with this stock image.
I can't draw, I'm pretty dumb in photoshop, and bioware has the whole art department over there. <_<
Could they spend ... I don't know... 1 hour on this instead of... 10 min?

She eats different food, she lives in a bubble suit. She should look more alien like. She should probably look closer to turian since they share digestive systems and have three digits.

Edit: She doesn't have to look terrible. I just want her to be less human than a few lines on her face and a white iris

This is one of the reasons why I think quarian faces should NOT be revealed.

The thing is: you cannot stray very far from the human template until all notions of conventional beauty (in the sense of actual attractiveness as a LI) fly straight out of the window. It's the reason why the asari were pretty much designed as blue-skinned babes with weird "hair".

By keeping Tali's face a mystery, our imagination could fill in the gaps, making her as alien-but-still-attractive as can be, custom-tailored to our tastes. It also added to her mystique and to the appeal of the quarians as a whole.
Replace that with a reveal, and you'll pretty much destroy a large part of what makes the quarians special.

Exactly. I always thought they look much more like turians. If bioware had no resources or time for full art development they should not reveal her face at all.

It's a 2D drawing and as far as I can tell it doesn't look like you can pull her face off. I think this is perfect. At least much better than the crap we got.

Now this, I can work with.

Yeah...but Turians are birds and Quarians are mammals. Wouldn't that be a little weird if they looked really similar?

Although I agree, she should've looked a little more alien. Not because of their digestive systems, however.

Aren't turians "inbetween" dinosaurs and birds ?

Quarian legs, at the very least, look somewhat birdlike.

honestly I knew before it even came out that some people weren`t gonna like it even if they did it well because some wanted her pretty and a few wanted her ugly but I was surprised that they really did that bad of a job I thought at least and int the art book or guide didn`t it say they try to figure out what the alien species look like without clothes so you wouldn`t wonder if that was their body or clothes so technically they should have known what she would look like my opinion at least

All past codex entries support the way Tali looks.
