Dragon Age Origins: Pre-1.02 Spells
Author: Damar Stiehl
Project Page: Click Here
Alternative download location: Dragon Age Nexus
Version: 1.0

DESCRIPTION:

This mod is intended for those who dislike the changes to spells introduced by DA:O Patch 1.02. The patch introduced the following changes:

- Cone of Cold Freeze duration lowered from 10 seconds to 8 seconds.
- Cone of Cold Cooldown increased from 10 seconds to 15 seconds.
- Crushing Prison duration reduced from 20 seconds to 9 seconds, damage per tick increased.
- Force Field duration reduced from 30 seconds to 18 seconds.
- Blizzard Freeze duration reduced from 20 seconds to 4 seconds.
- Arcane Warrior Shimmering Shield turns off when your mana reaches 0.

This mod is modular, and can be used to undo all of the changes, or only some changes. See the Installation section for details.

INSTALLATION:

Copy the files you wish to use into the Override folder. You can use all files at the same time, or select only the ones you want.

- To restore pre-1.02 Cone of Cold cooldown, use ABI_base_oldspells_CoC.2da from "Pre-1.02 Cone of Cold Cooldown" folder.

- To restore pre-1.02 Shimmering Shield functionality, use ABI_base_oldspells_SS.2da from "Pre-1.02 Shimmering Shield" folder.

- To restore pre-1.02 durations of Blizzard Freeze, Cone of Cold Freeze, Crushing Prison and Force Field, use spell_singletarget.ncs from "Pre-1.02 Durations" folder.

UNINSTALLATION:

To uninstall the mod, delete the files you no longer wish to use from the Override folder.

SOURCE FILES:

All source files used for this mod can be found in the "Source" folder. Edit and use them as you wish.

COMPATIBILITY:

If you choose to use spell_singletarget.ncs, the mod is incompatible with any other mod that changes the same file.

KNOWN ISSUES
:

None at present. This mod may need to be updated if a future official patch makes desirable changes to spell_singletarget.ncs file.

NOTES:

- I realize that the "durations" part of this mod is a rather inelegant hack. Eventually, I may re-code it to be a touch prettier, but I need to learn DA toolset scripting better first. It works as is, for now, and does not cause any bugs or issues. It simply reverts the nerfed spells to their pre-1.02 state.

- I am fully aware that Shimmering Shield not turning off at 0 mana is officially considered to be a bug. However, I liked Shimmering Shield the way it used to be before 1.02. The file that restores the spell's zero-mana functionality is completely optional. You are free not to use it if you like the new functionality. Please do not send me messages telling me that I undid a bug-fix. I already know.

- I am also fully aware that the "new and improved" Crushing Prison does its damage a lot faster than the pre-1.02 version (though the total amount of damage is exactly the same). If you like the 1.02 version of Crushing Prison, do not use spell_singletarget.ncs.

- Dragon Age: Origins is a single player game. You are free to use any mods you wish with it, or none at all. Your playing experience is your own, and it is entirely separate from the experience of others. Feel free to contact me if you find issues with this mod, or have suggestions regarding its functionality. However, if you disagree with the gameplay effects of this mod, kindly keep your comments (particularly the vitriol) to yourself.

LEGAL:

Dragon Age: Origins is Bioware/EA intellectual property. This mod is NOT supported by Bioware or EA. I am not reponsible for any and all technical issues you may experience while using this mod. If you have an issue or suggestion related to this mod, please contact me using the information listed above; however, I cannot promise that I will respond and/or be able to assist.

FYI: dev amended his statements re: crushing prison - its total damage was reduced by 15%.

The pseudo legal boilerplate looks cute. If I had that in my posts, I would feel pretty cool - like I got deputized by Bioware sherriffs or something. Wait... I don't need to sign anything, do I? Let me know so I can try out your mod!  :)

Good job, may give this a go after a bit more experimenting with the changes. Honestly I'd just like CP to go back to what is was as I don't like it's new focus on raw damage.

Thank you so much for this "unfix." I installed the 1.02 patch because I wanted to play as a dual wield rogue and didn't want my daggers to suck. I didn't realize it altered my favourite spells until it was too late.

Just one question: Where is the fix?  I don't see it in your link.

Sweet! I was getting tired of using actual skill and tactics to beat the game, and this really fixed the godawful issue with us actually having to use brains!

Now Allistair sits there completely invulnerable while darkspawn try to hit him!

EDIT: Good work on the mod though. I just think wanting to actually use the mod is stupid :P

Was this really needed? If you don't want to use the mod then don't but then to come in here and slag off people who do? Honestly.

I've never heard anyone outside Beast Wars ever use the word "slag" It served as the unerage viewer friendly version of the exclamation "5hit!" or "damn"

Im confused. The forums have been seething with players ranting that mages were OP since release, so bioware release a patch to try to fix that a bit...and there's already a mod to change things back? "blinks"

There's nothing here to be confused about. Everyone's taste is a little different. Some people like the things the patch changes, some don't. This is provided for those who don't.  Freedom of choice.

Would you expect people who like how something works to flood the forum shouting about it?

The people who didn't like the balance complained, and they got their fix.  Those of us who would rather the game allow us to find those gameplay features without having them then taken away from us would now like to change it back (or at least some of it).

As I see it, BioWare designed the game as they saw fit, and these spells (except for Shimmering Shield) were working as intended.  But people didn't use them as BioWare expected, so BiOWare has now patched the spells to produce combat outcomes more in line with their intent.

And I object to that.  BiWare should give us fair and balanced rules, and then let the chips fall where they may.  This is, as it happens, exactly why I hate many professional sports organisations.  Teams learn to play effective defense, and the league outlaws those types of defenses.  One manufacturer makes faster cars, and the sanctioning body bans the new components that manufacturer invented.

A level playing field doesn't produce equal outcomes.  It grants equal opportunities.  I very strongly prefer equality of opportunity over equality of outcome.  So I'm undoing the balance changes that weren't bugfixes.

I am not installing 1.02 until this mod is available for download.

Thanks for this mod. Going to try it out tonight.

(mostly just posting so this shows up in my profile page, since subscribing to projects doesn't work and otherwise I'd never find this page again)

Like it or not, some of those abilities were just grossly overpowered. (Force Field and Cone of Cold). Your argument against "Leveling the Playing field" comes off a little stupid to me personally. I can just as easily say you're advocating auto-win buttons put in on every game. If a game was tested to perfect balance, no game would be released. You wonder why all those free online flash games are always stuck in "Beta"...?

But at the same time, it's not without merit. Because who judges what is "Strong" And what is Overpowered. It really becomes a subjective matter. I felt that Some spells really weren't overpowered , I always felt Blizzard was actually quite weak... Crushing Prison as well was a very good spell, but it fit. It could only lock 1 enemy, and more often than not, it found you on the receiving end.

However, some that are still grossly overpowered are still in the game. ManaClash? If that's not the epitome of broken, I don't know what is. It may be situational, but It's obviously not balanced enough for the enemy to have it... So yah...

I completely agree with this. If there was any spell I consider borken, it's Mana Clash. Force Field is broken also, but the patch doesn't fix the brokenness and instead just makes it a worse spell. I will definitely be using (parts of) this mod. Thanks Damar Stiehl!

Good morning everyone;

Something odd is happening. I swear, the file was there yesterday. This morning, the Download link is greyed out and I cannot upload a replacement file. Conspiracy is afoot!

But fret not. Shame on me for not throwing it into an alternative location yesterday, but I was busy. The file is now on Dragonagenexus, and since it is minuscule in size and contains no boobage, you can grab it without needing to register.

Get it here: Dragon Age Nexus. Apologies to anyone who was looking and could not find.

Edit: Well, now it seems that you CAN get the file, but you have to go into the project and switch to Files tab. The download link there works.
