Didn't they say that one of their inspirations for Kai Leng was Darth Maul? That was another thing that baffled me, taking inspiration from the Star Wars prequels.
Well, to be fair, he's probably the only cool thing from the prequels.
Well that and Liam Neeson.

Hardly, there was nothing interesting about Darth Maul, maybe if they had given him some character or hints I might have cared.
And no, Liam Neeson was not good in the prequels, neither was Sasmuel L. Jackson.

Tough crowd. Liam Neeson is always cool. I don't want to get put in the unfortunate position of defending Star Wars prequels though (I don't care either), so I'll keep it at that.
I will give you one thing, Liam Neeson was atleast a good choice to pick to play a jedi. Samuel L. Jackson being one was a terrible decision.

I remember reading a later interview with Liam Neeson. He confessed that he thought most of the cast, including himself, came across as wooden in the Phantom Menace.
Back on topic, I don't remember many strong feelings either way regarding Kai Leng when I played the game. He was just "meh".
I remember thinking his fight choreography was a bit naff, and I couldn't understand why Shepard and Co didn't at least try to shoot him in the Citadel cut scene.

IMO it wasn't really the actors fault. The writing and dialogue was often so awful and didn't make sense, and the actors really didn't have much to work with and it must have been impossible to figure out the characters motivation from the dire writing.

I never said it was, Neeson and Jackson are both good actors, but even good actors can be powerless in the face of a terrible script.

I once said, that if the player as Shepard was allowed the choice to stay with Cerberus, I figure it would be like Darth Sideous having both Vader AND Maul at his sides at the same time.
Just think; both Shepard and Leng plowing through the Citadel using their own styles and taking their own routes.
Imagine: Shepard with the most messed face covered with red glow-in-the-dark lines walking fearlessly without bothering to take cover while mowing down C-Sec, with the Darth Vader theme playing in the background.

Mass Effect was never like a branch storyline based game. It was an overall linear game with some decisions here and there.

ME3 had no business going off course like that, by hijacking the character.

Mass Effect 3 needed a Vaas Montenegro or a Colonel Radec type character as a secondary antagonist.

How about not having any idiotic Citadel coup mission where Cerberus does stupid **** for no reason?

Yes, people hated Kai Leng.
They just hate him not for his merrit as a villain, but for being a ****ty, out-of-place character in the story.

A little OT, but I completely agree with that last part.
Kai Leng was just a boring and cliched nemesis. And like someone else said earlier, I wanted to head slap Shepard when Kai Leng jumped on top of the car and instead of knocking him off by hitting that bridge/support(or whatever you want to call it), he just shoots at him and utterly fails at it.

^THIS^
Kai Leng's entire menace or threat reqquires Shepard to be a complete drooling idiot, when realisticaly Leng's got no game. Take Thessia for example. I have weapons that could, in gameplay, cut Leng AND his gunship in twain before the Thermal Clip runs dry, but somehow he gets the upper hand! And even SHEPARD says during the Cerberus Base fight that all Kai Leng has done is talk and run. It's a little hard to take a guy like that as a serious threat.

I believe you're wrong, Mass Effect 1 tried really hard to make the player feel like he was Shepard with most of the decision making, simply by considering the fact that Journal for example, doesn't say "Shepard must stop Saren", it says "You must stop Saren".
ME3 had no business going off course like that, by hijacking the character.
Why am I wrong? Did Mass Effect had a branching storyline ever? No. If you want something like that, go play the Witcher 2.
ME1 "trying" really hard to make the player feel like it was our Shepard is what is called an "illusion".

Do you mean it wasn't poor writing or the power of the cutscene that should have make people dislike Kai Leng so much??
An example of a villain that you hate in the right way is Joffrey from ASOIAF. He is well characterised as an evil ****, and a realistically portrayed one, whilst not being stupidly over the top and falling into cliches. It's really believable because he seems like a boy who already has a slight tendency to being cruel (as you see IRL with kids pulling wings off flies) and, combined that with a sense of entitlement and being a royal entitled brat, it all ties together into a realistic, evil, sadistic bastard that it well characterised and not OTT.
Compare to Kai Leng where he's hated because he is an inconsistent, poorly characterised, nonsensically plot armoured, poorly written irritant.

He was supposed to show how Shepard would behave, if he was totally controled by The Guy in Hugo Boss shirt (TIM).
But in the end, ME3 was rushed as a game, we can see it in characters constantly clipping into objects and other characters, low resolution textures witch looks just awful durning cutscenes on PC, lack of dialogues for the ammount of stuff that could have been brought up durning conversations ect.
Let's hope BioWare will polish "ME4" to the very bottom, by taking it's time even till late 2015.
We want no games born solely due to deadline restrictions.
