"Author" William C. Dietz wrote Mass Effect: Deception, a book so bad that it was practically recalled by BioWare after we (BSN, duh) ripped it to shreds for its lack of respect towards the series' lore and consistency of the books. It's so bad that now it is officially NOT canon.

But instead, he is some troll-email sending coward who relies on a gunship and reinforcements and almost gets killed by a ill Drell.
Though I did like his voice however.

Can we demand a side by side comparison? I feel this warrants one, if only for the potential giggles.

When they mentioned Kai Leng being Shepard's rival, I imagined someone like the Operative from Serenity. Instead, we got some idiot who drones cheesy one liners, and only wins thanks to plot armour.

The Operative was amazingly better than KL.

To be fair, I never thought Kai Leng was bad, he was a bad guy, an indoctrinated bad guy and he was like an annoying thorn who kept screwing you over. You quickly grow to hate the dweeb and want him dead >WHICH MAKES HIM A GOOD VILLIAN< even if he's a >BAD RIVAL<
Disagree. A good villian isn't supposed to make you hate the writers. A good villian is supposed to illicate a reaction to HIM. Saren was a good villian. K-L was not.

1 Stereotypical: Japanese ninja? Come on.
2 Not a worthy villain: He fails hard at being a threat. Makes you wonder where are the days of Saren or Harbinger, and miss them sorely. KL only gets to survive his encounters with Shepard because of:
3 Plot Armor: The worst of all. He can't get respect as character by himself due to how poorly he's writen, so we get him shoved down our throats whether we like it or not.

but he was very downgraded as a cereal killer on Deception and in ME3 he was quite more like a recurrent joke (not a funny one btw).
Another harbinger who went to waste.

As a guy who never read any of the comics or novels, throwing Kai Leng into the game made me go, "What the hell dude?" To me he seems like an excessive character with no background story, and that alone pisses me off. Who is this guy that was supposed to be my rival, and I don't know jack about him. Really, I didn't even see him as my rival, more like an annoying pest, set loose by the Illusive Man to ****** me off even more by killing Thane.

In all honesty, if Bioware was so adament about having a character to be Shepard's rival, I would much rather have had Saren be brought back by Cerberus/Reaper science/magic. Sure Saren coming back from the dead would have made little sense, as he disintigrated at the end of Mass Effect 1, but I would guarentee you that he would have been a million times better as an antagonist then Kai Leng ever could.

I did find this doing a google search a while ago for Kai Leng mlp. Along with some other disturbing images like sheplooXkai shirtless stuff.

And then Deception happened. We had a little 453 page thread on the subject. Books were burned (legitimately to my utter shock I assure you) Kai Leng was hardly the only problem with the book but he did center in some of the most ridiculous bits. I had hoped that ME3 might redeem our villain.
Sadly as we all know that was not that case. Combined with Deception and that fact that massive plot armor that managed to help debase other characters into total idiots like Shepard, Thane and whomever was accompanying whenever Leng showed up. Basically Leng suffers from massive villain decay, plot armor rot and missed opportunities.
