To those still wondering about the cereal meme:

"Author" William C. Dietz wrote Mass Effect: Deception, a book so bad that it was practically recalled by BioWare after we (BSN, duh) ripped it to shreds for its lack of respect towards the series' lore and consistency of the books. It's so bad that now it is officially NOT canon.

Because the character fits the setting about as well as Donald Duck fits into Saving Private Ryan

Because he comes across as a terribly contrived, horribly implemented plot device that looks like he walked out of Deus Ex. Maybe my opinion would be different had I read the books, or had the writers utilized adequate in-game exposition..but neither of those things happened so, meh. He needs to take his butt back to Deus Ex and bring the ending along with him.

He's supposed to be Shep's equal, and one who could kick his ass.
But instead, he is some troll-email sending coward who relies on a gunship and reinforcements and almost gets killed by a ill Drell.
Though I did like his voice however.

Because he was randomly implimented late into the series, had no real impact and did a very poor job at replacing the IM as a protaganist - he's there so the IM could have fight scenes via proxy, without ruining the IM's character. To be honest they should have just left Kai totally out of it.

Kai Leng should have been the strong, silent type. Instead we were given an immature drone who attacks Shepard with text messages.

This is a game about spaceships....and the best the bad guys can come up with is a pompus Jackie Chan stand in with the worlds most ridiculous pony tail, gives him a sword and a pistol that fires from his palm? And yet, despite his "acrobatics", is still no match for Shepard who relies on an assault rifle and basic tech?

Not something i could ever take seriously, especially with his dialogue....

Bioware used him to murder my Thane. Plus he looks like an angry My Little Pony. That's enough of a reason for me.

When they mentioned Kai Leng being Shepard's rival, I imagined someone like the Operative from Serenity. Instead, we got some idiot who drones cheesy one liners, and only wins thanks to plot armour.

He sounded a lot more dangerous in the leaked script.

Can we demand a side by side comparison?  I feel this warrants one, if only for the potential giggles.

The Operative was amazingly better than KL.

While I do not hate him, I just feel as if he didn't live up to being Shepard's rival. I think TIM did pretty good at that, without having to be a N7 ninja.

To be fair, I never thought Kai Leng was bad, he was a bad guy, an indoctrinated bad guy and he was like an annoying thorn who kept screwing you over. You quickly grow to hate the dweeb and want him dead >WHICH MAKES HIM A GOOD VILLIAN< even if he's a >BAD RIVAL<

Disagree.  A good villian isn't supposed to make you hate the writers.  A good villian is supposed to illicate a reaction to HIM.  Saren was a good villian.  K-L was not.

Mainly 3 reasons.

1 Stereotypical: Japanese ninja? Come on.
2 Not a worthy villain: He fails hard at being a threat. Makes you wonder where are the days of Saren or Harbinger, and miss them sorely. KL only gets to survive his encounters with Shepard because of:
3 Plot Armor: The worst of all. He can't get respect as character by himself due to how poorly he's writen, so we get him shoved down our throats whether we like it or not.

In Retribution I thought on him like a very bad guy... like the diabolic version of thane.

but he was very downgraded as a cereal killer on Deception and in ME3 he was quite more like a recurrent joke (not a funny one btw).

Another harbinger who went to waste.

Two words. Space ninja.

As a guy who never read any of the comics or novels, throwing Kai Leng into the game made me go, "What the hell dude?" To me he seems like an excessive character with no background story, and that alone pisses me off. Who is this guy that was supposed to be my rival, and I don't know jack about him. Really, I didn't even see him as my rival, more like an annoying pest, set loose by the Illusive Man to ****** me off even more by killing Thane.

Like others have said I disliked KL for being a space ninja, being completely childish with his emails, and the rediculous (sp?) amount of plot armor Bioware gave him.

In all honesty, if Bioware was so adament about having a character to be Shepard's rival, I would much rather have had Saren be brought back by Cerberus/Reaper science/magic. Sure Saren coming back from the dead would have made little sense, as he disintigrated at the end of Mass Effect 1, but I would guarentee you that he would have been a million times better as an antagonist then Kai Leng ever could.

I did find this doing a google search a while ago for Kai Leng mlp. Along with some other disturbing images like sheplooXkai shirtless stuff.

I hated Kai Leng a long time ago, after reading Retribution. It was that good kind of hate though, I loathed him because he was absolutely despicable and was fully capable of being a threat to Shepard. I looked forward to laying his head at Aria's feet.

And then Deception happened. We had a little 453 page thread on the subject. Books were burned (legitimately to my utter shock I assure you) Kai Leng was hardly the only problem with the book but he did center in some of the most ridiculous bits. I had hoped that ME3 might redeem our villain.

Sadly as we all know that was not that case. Combined with Deception and that fact that massive plot armor that managed to help debase other characters into total idiots like Shepard, Thane and whomever was accompanying whenever Leng showed up. Basically Leng suffers from massive villain decay, plot armor rot and missed opportunities.
