I just tried something interesting, I've got some rackmount gear currently between my PC and some audio gear (I do a bit of music production) so I tried something interesting.
Filtered everything above 25Hz (harshly, 36dB/octave) and sent the resulting infrasonic to a nice sub.
There's loads of it.
An interesting thought given that infrasound is known for causing unusual psychological effects (possibly an evolutionary thing since volcanos, earthquakes and tsunamis all produce it in vast quantities).
article on infrasound experiment in Wiki "The participants were not told which pieces included the low-level 17 Hz near-infrasonic tone. The presence of the tone resulted in a significant number (22%) of respondents reporting anxiety, uneasiness, extreme sorrow, nervous feelings of revulsion or fear, chills down the spine and feelings of pressure on the chest."
Not a great source for anything but I thought what you said was interesting and googled it. Maybe it was done on purpose since ME3 is all about being dark and emanating a feeling of anxiety.
Edit: I found a peer reviewed article claiming the same thing through wind turbine affects but I can't link it because a student ID is required to pull it up.
