If you're a fan of the STALKER games (and if you aren't, for shame), then this seems to be a good spiritual successor in terms of the atmosphere and general feeling of isolation and loneliness that the games were famous for.
You can find more information here.
Of interest - since the major sites started talking about this mod, ARMA II has shot up to the top five best sellers on Steam, without any attached sales.

I have shamed The Epler Gods.
I have not played any STALKER games.
Sacrilege.

I'm still playing the "When Epler mentions STALKER" drinking game, this is like... the first drink I've had in a while.
Related: I've seen the mod played in my class, it looked interesting. Would you recommend getting the game on the mod alone?
I might wait for a sale, but it really is quite a brilliant mod. There are some technical issues, but it's a free mod, and it's gone from 100-200 players to well over 2000 almost overnight. One of the devs of the mod is also a member of the ARMA II team, as far as I know.

I'll have to try this out. This video kind of sold me on it. Its fun reading people's little stories about their experiences with it.
Sadly, the vast majority of my stories thus far are 'ran around for a while, eventually got mobbed by zombies and died'. Still a lot of fun, though.

How is the atmosphere in it? You compare it to STALKER and I'm guessing you're comparing it to the atmosphere? Because if it's anything like STALKER's atmosphere...then that's awesome.
That's exactly what the atmosphere feels like - lonely and desolate. You see someone in the distance, and you have to make the decision 'do I hide, ambush them or run away'. Because they could be a zombie, they could be a friendly player or they could be a bandit.
It is the closest 'spiritual successor' to STALKER I expect we're going to see for some time - minus the Metro games, of course.

So let me tell you a story.
I started today with an AK-74, a map, a compass, a watch, matches - the whole nine yards.
I went towards Komishovo. When there, I pulled out my binoculars to check out the town and walked forward a few steps. Apparently I walked onto a mini black hole that only looked like rocks, because I ended up inside the rocks and immediately died.
Respawning, I went towards where I died, thinking I could get my stuff. When I got there, I found -another- patch of rocks that were out to murder me and I died. Again.
Alright, this time, I'm going to just scrounge for new gear. Walk into a warehouse and there's another player. I have a bead on him, but I don't shoot. I start to move back, out of the warehouse, and he decides to plug me. Dead again.
Spawn again. This time, I'm in a town. I make it to a warehouse, plug a zombie and immediately find myself fighting about a dozen more. This sucks, but I've got the ammo. I kill the zombies, make my way to a factory. A player walks in, asks if I'm friendly, and as I'm replying in the affirmative he kills me.
Make it to Elektro. Let's just say, same thing as last time.
Find my body in Elektro. Guy who killed me is still there. I murder him, murder another guy who walks in, murder a third guy who shows up. I find a Lee Enfield, a map, a compass, a watch, binocs, an ALICE pack full of goodies and a hatchet. I leave town, make it to a barn and then log off, as I have to get back to writing documentation.
Lesson learned? Murder everyone. This is no world for the nice guy that I usually play games as.

Sounds like those magic rocks are out to get you, John! That's something I didn't realize I need to watch out for, thanks for the tip!
And the guy asks if you're friendly so he can murder you? Wow!
I picked up Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead recently during an Amazon sale in order to play DayZ, but it seems I can't use the CD key to register it on Steam.
Is it going to be harder to find good multiplayer servers without using Steam? Or is all of that internally managed by the game client?
It's all managed internally. Steam is just an overlay so you can chat with friends and see who's playing.
If you start playing, let me know your character name so I don't accidentally murder you.
