Anyone been playing this? Read about it on RPS the other day, and had to boot it up - it's pretty fun.

If you're a fan of the STALKER games (and if you aren't, for shame), then this seems to be a good spiritual successor in terms of the atmosphere and general feeling of isolation and loneliness that the games were famous for.

You can find more information here.

Of interest - since the major sites started talking about this mod, ARMA II has shot up to the top five best sellers on Steam, without any attached sales.

Well Stalker and Arma play nothing like each other but if anyone is willing to try it your in for some great fun.

Also I don't know if anyone has heard of Mount and Blade (idk how you wouldn't have) but there is a Game of Thrones overhaul in the works!

Wait till he notices Gemma took his place in my signature.

He's gonna be soooooo mad.

I'm gonna have to cry really hard, with the intent to guilt trip him into posting in my Tea thread, conveniently placed here.

Sidenote-

A mod posts a topic about a mod. lawl

I'm still playing the "When Epler mentions STALKER" drinking game, this is like... the first drink I've had in a while.

Related: I've seen the mod played in my class, it looked interesting. Would you recommend getting the game on the mod alone?

 ^^

Anyway, that mod seems spectacular in all the social interaction and whatnot. Would want to see something like this in non-shooters as well.

I might wait for a sale, but it really is quite a brilliant mod. There are some technical issues, but it's a free mod, and it's gone from 100-200 players to well over 2000 almost overnight. One of the devs of the mod is also a member of the ARMA II team, as far as I know.

Sadly, the vast majority of my stories thus far are 'ran around for a while, eventually got mobbed by zombies and died'. Still a lot of fun, though.

Speaking about zombies, or rather Infected, Left 4 Dierté.

(damn man, can Valve count to three? Christ)

I'm trying to contribute to this thread, I swear.

Or this one with the bus and the zombies chasing after it. Reminds me a lot of The Walking Dead.

ARMA II is the military sim that was made by the same people that did the original Operation Flashpoint, right? I loved Flashpoint back in the day. The huge levels were very cool.

How is the atmosphere in it? You compare it to STALKER and I'm guessing you're comparing it to the atmosphere? Because if it's anything like STALKER's atmosphere...then that's awesome.

I picked up ArmA on Steam and am downloading it now. That youtube video makes it look sort of like Call of Duty. It's a multi-player FPS?

And the mod adds zombies?

Looks like a pure survival game to me. You have to move slow and scavenge whatever resources you can. If the server is at night, you can't see much of anything. So you need to use flares to see but it attracts attention. If your player dies, all progress is lost and that character is gone forever. When you leave servers, it saves your location and progress. You have to eat to survive too. You have to avoid other players because they can kill you too and take your goods. Like raiders. Looks like you have to roll with a good group of friends to play this game.

No doubt they have some groups going into servers and killing everyone's character off.

I have been meaning to download the mod and give it a try. Looks awesome.

ArmA2:OA/CO is a great sandbox sort of game but it has very steep system requirements. Don't expect consistent smooth 50+ FPS performance. It's one of those games that pushes computing power to its limits and in larger battles your performance will suffer.

It's probably all of the mods out there that makes it worth a buy. You have stuff ranging from zombies, to aircraft carriers, to a sim quality AH-64 in the works. The modding community BIS has is incredible. The ACE mod is the choice of a lot of hardcore military simulator types. And by hardcore I mean you'll be reading the manual for the realistic radio simulator addon in order to properly set the frequency in order to get the faintest idea of what your team is doing.

Unfortunately installing and managing all of these addons is a bit more difficult, but there are few good guides out there. Many people use the SixUpdater suite which I have yet to figure out and get the hang of.

Can a 3 year old game really be that demanding unless it's poorly optimized? I've seen some videos and it doesn't look like anything special. If I can run Witcher 2 on Ultra(most settings except ubersampling) then I should be able to run Arma 2 fine...?

Don't get me wrong. It will run fine on a good system. But there isn't much scripting with the AI so bigger battles (company level stuff) can slow you down somewhat. It will still be playable, but on a busy server you can't go in expecting a consistent frame-rate of 60 or whatever. It's not the GPU being the bottleneck, but rather the CPU and RAM. Supposedly performance really benefits if you run it off a faster hard drive or SSD.

Regarding optimization, they've improved that a lot through patches, yet there are still some complaints. But if your system can run the Witcher 2 like that, I'm sure you'll be fine.

It's anything but call of duty. The game aims for realism, and is open world. You've ever heard of operation flashpoint? ARMA is a successor series. Like O:F it also has single player modes and stuff. But the game's really difficult, and kind of "hard core". Like if you want to survive, you'll need to crawl most of the time. And even then you'll get a shot through the head by some competent sniper who is just a dot on some far away building. Not to mention that you can drive a myriad of different realistically-difficult machines. ARMA is a war simulator really. Hence the uncomparability to CoD. Most FPS fans who play this will probably have doubts about how cool an actual firefight really is.

Here's some video footage of what an AI battle can look like, and how messing with the editors is fun:

edit: and the mod rather adds speed and intensity to the game, via these zombies and the search for equipment and rations (you actually have pressing matters at hand - like food and water shortage - and that's why I'm guessing it's so popular). If you compare to playing the original:

This article sums it up rather well: http://www.relyonhor...en-waiting-for/

That's exactly what the atmosphere feels like - lonely and desolate. You see someone in the distance, and you have to make the decision 'do I hide, ambush them or run away'. Because they could be a zombie, they could be a friendly player or they could be a bandit.

It is the closest 'spiritual successor' to STALKER I expect we're going to see for some time - minus the Metro games, of course.

Whoa what are the odds?I just discovered this through my nephew and watched these videos

Now this is by far the last kind of game I'd ever even give 2 shakes at but after watching this I'm tempted.

Yeah I was watching those earlier. Seems like its most fun if you play with some friends. Some of those videos are more entertaining than The Walking Dead.

Like this part where you can hear the cries of poor SpaceCadet as he's being eaten alive but nobody has enough ammo to help.
