Occasionally, herds of cats will run through the Denerim marketplace.  This usually occurs sometime late in the game, and they don't appear in every playthrough.

I say "herd," by which I mean a small group of perhaps four or five cats.  Leaping and running together.

Sometimes I chase them, but there does not appear to be any reason to do so.  At least, I have never discovered one.

Is there some plot-related reason for the appearance of these cats?  Or are they there just for interest's sake, appearing randomly and not in every playthrough?

Yes, cats. Of the same general type as appear elsewhere in the game.
