Was I voted out? Did I time out? What happened? The phrasing seems to indicate the former. If the latter, then a different message should be displayed, saying 'your connection was lost' or something.
What exactly is "You were kicked out"?

EA likes to be mysterious so ppl wont blame their crap servers all the time.
But many online folks in ME3 do kick you for the most idiotic reasons so idk

What, so this is one of those games where you had to have been in on the ground floor to keep up? That's what made Ultima Online and Lineage suck. What happened to matchmaking?

The most important reasons for being kicked are the following:
Low level character in silver and gold games
Equipping two weapons on adepts and vanguards
Taking an awful lot of time in the lobby before pressing ready

I've made sure it only selects bronze games. The game will only let me equip two weapons on adepts and vanguards. I'm getting "You were kicked out" BEFORE reaching the lobby.

The point is that two weapons is too much for caster classes. You should be able to equip only one.predcon wrote...

If it's before reaching the lobby then it's definitely a bug.

Because some people are dicks.
One person probably went...
"Oh well he is playing a class I suck at so it must be horrible using weapons I suck at so they must be horrable and since he has both he must be horrible and suck and I am better than him"
Or...
"COMEONCOMEONCOMEONCOMEONCOMEONCOMEONCOMEON!!!! I WANT TO PLAY NOW, WHY ARE YOU NOT READY BEFORE YOU GET INTO THE LOBBY GTFO UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO GO BEFORE YOU EVEN GET IN THE LOBBY!!!11111ELEVENELEVENONEONEONE
Then the other two went...
"Oh hey, some one voted to kick him off the team, I better do the same to ensure that the other two think I know what I am doing"

You're giving me reasons why I may or may not have been voted out. I was asking if the message I was getting was 'universal', or if I should have been getting a different message for ping time-outs and lost connections.
I wasn't prompted to equip and level up before I entered the lobby, so I didn't think to. I haven't played any multiplayer games since ye olde deathmatch days, when everyone starts out with the same gun and has to scramble for the guns spawned on the map. I guess since I wasn't prompted before entering the lobby, I was expecting to be kitted out with a random assortment of class specific weapons and mods.

Usually if you don't manage to get inside the lobby you get the error "your connection to the game has been lost." You're probably encountering a bug. Try and contact official tech support at EA or through the Origin application.

I don't think it's worth pursuing any further than I have already. The class of persons playing now makes the whole thing unappealing. If ever a clan system is instituted and I can be assured that I'll be playing with (relatively) mature adults, I'll come back to it.

Meh - it varies.
About a month ago, I joined a game where two players voted out the third just as I entered the lobby.
"OK," sez I. "Looks like somebody didn't know how to hold a gun." I made the third vote, and off he went. He was character level 5 or 6, while the rest of us were 17 +.
New Player enters the lobby. He was level 2. Two red Xs appeared by his name. Like, that quick. Surprised, I think "Oh, I must be in a silver or gold match," and I look up - It's bronze.
Then I left the lobby. Jerks.
On a decidedly more embarrassing note, I hadn't played for a couple of weeks some time back, and I found myself the only person who didn't get extracted in the last wave. I had been at the LZ wondering why everyone was on the other side of the map. Too late, I realized that the LZ had moved to another location since the last time I played the game.
I was unceremoniously booted once we returned to the lobby. *sigh* It was bronze too, and I've never booted anyone for that reason, but I was embarrassed enough about my error to shrug and suck that one up.
For the most part, these things don't happen, so I play still. That kind of twittery is still in the minority as far as I can tell.

People kicking you out for your character level are stupid. First, you level up really quickly, and second the true experience of the player can be measured by looking at the N7 value, which means he/she already promoted many level 20 characters to the ME single player campaign. Which of course means, he/she has to restart with the promoted character class from zero.
I normally kick someone out only for the following reasons:
- taking awfully long to "ready", while I do not see any change in character, loadout or equipment, and AFTER I requested him verbally to hurry up a little (but I am quite patient
)
- someone who, in a previous mission had his microphon permanently on and ignored all verbal requests from the other members to change the settings, particularly when that person has tv or music playing in the background, which I am forced to listen to
- experience hogs who, in a previous mission, let their character sit in a corner, waiting for the other three to finish and gain him points for not participating.
Other reasons I do not really see. Especially on bronze everybody should get a chance, and if I am a good player, for sure I will be able to cover 2-3 missions for a weaker partner until he/she leveled up.
HOWEVER, I do try to check and upgrade all my character classes before going to the lobby, so that I could even quickly switch character if for example all players are engineers. That way the only thing to adapt is the equipment (weapon add-on etc). If I do have to change character and upgrade it, I briefly inform the other players. If they then kick me out anyway because they are too impatient to wait 30secs, I could not care less and they can play without me.

Sounds like you were connecting to a very laggy game. You probably popped up in their lobby before you could actually see it yourself, and they kicked you for whatever reason. You probably wouldn't want to play a match with that much lag anyways, so might've been for the best.
