What?  You mean the faulty assumption that somehow Allers character greviously stole resources that could have been put into other things?

It did. They could have custom modelled another face. Like, for Tali. As people in this thread keep saying.

Exactly the average shmuch that plays the game and doesn't  go on internet forums to **** about everything under the sun isn't going to know or care who the va is of a minor character and Allers is a minor character tucked away in Zaeed's old quarters.  Allers doesn't even need to be taken aboard the Normandy she is completely optional yet some people have really ****ed about her like she changes the whole game or something.

The hatred for Allers has other reasons than her influence on the gameplay...

When you put it that way, it sounds like people are saying Chobot's insertion prevented development of entire levels, which is not the case. A "photo-realistic" model of Chobots face did, however, take time and resources to develop. Both Emily Wong and Kalisah al-Jilani already had models that could have been used. The time freed up by not modeling Chobot could have been used to render Tali's face instead.
There is the added benefit of no appearance of impropriety on the part of IGN. When one of your major public figures has a role in a film, game, or whatever, any review you make is going to have the appearance of a conflict of interest. In some instances, the appearance of conflict of interests is adequate grounds for a court case. I am not advocating civil litigation, nor do I think there is grounds for one against IGN or EA in regards to this. I simply want to make a point about the severity of even the appearance of impropriety.

No, it would have been put into a different "war reporter" character... because Bioware wanted said character.  Even if it had been Emily Wong, her sprite would have needed to have been updated, face mapped again for said updated graphics resolution, movement plotted, etc...

Would you have hated that?  Because guess what... those resources would not have been put into Tali or any other element.

Me too, Im pretty sure its a question most ME fans have asked at one point

Is it really so unbelievable that someone at bioware said "You know what the Mass Effect series really needs? Jessica Chobot!" ?

No. I don't give a **** about Tali or what random war reporter they wanted. But even if the opportunity cost was sex-up, redid Emily Wong, that's still the opportunity cost.

You're wrong about the cost being zero. That's my only point.

I didn't say the cost was zero.  At all.

I said the net cost to other things would have been zero, because the resources spent on Allers would have been spent on some other "war reporter" character.  It would not have gone elsewhere, like for example, rendering Tali.

At the end of the day, this has nothing to do with the character Diani Allers, and everything to do with a seething hate of Jessica Chobot or the company she works for.  At least the OP was honest about it.

BioWare needed to ingratiate themselves with IGN. So they killed off Emily Wong on Twitter and replaced her with Allers.

Pretty disappointing, to say the least.

As far as I am concerned, Emily Wong did not die in game therefore she is still alive. Anything on twitter can suck the big one. If it isn't in game a comic book or novel. it did't happen.

I mean, is there a reason they decided to take the time to model her face in the game? Between her crappy voice acting and the fact she works for IGN did they think fans would like her replacing Emily Wong?

I just can't think of any reason why Bioware thought it would be a good idea. They could have used that development time to make a decent ending or model Tali's face in-game instead.

1. EA makes deal with IGN
2. EA says make Jessica to game BW
3. IGN gives best score for game
4. Fools who read IGN think game is excelent
5. Profit

Not official, but thats how things go with EA

Chobot claimed for a long time she had friends in Bioware. I think that's all there is to it really. Lucky her for getting to be in the game I suppose.

I'm a tad jealous, but hey, there's not really a reason NOT to include her. If you don't like her, feel free to never speak to her.

you're just mad you aren't in the game. You don't need to ACT to pay a reporter, there's no tones you need to deliver the news. I study journalism and ther's nothing wrong with her voicce work. she's supposed to remain neutral when delivering the news and when Allers does need to be emotional when talking about Bekenstien Chobot is emotional.

One, she's a fan.

Two, she's an IGN staffer. It's a bribe to IGN to assure good reviews for the game.

1. Emily Wong would've been a far superior choice for that role. Hell, they don't even need to worry about the model too much. It has to be there in ME2 (more or less). Or just update her ME1 skin.

2. Spend the time saved here to properly do something else small in game. Say... render a freaking character's face. Just the face is all that was needed. Not a whole new body, just a face. But no. Lazy photoshop FTW!

She's there to nerdbait and make sure that ME3 got a few "perfect" scores. Such waste of time and money, not to mention the voice "acting"

Honestly, I have no idea. This has been brought up a million times already and I still don't have an answer.

The only thing I can think is that it was a sort of marketing ploy like Felicia Day was for DA2. But is this girl as popular as Felicia Day? I'd never heard of her before she got into the game.

By this point I'm not even annoyed by Allers' presence, I'm just deeply confused as to why they bothered.

You guys have no idea what you are talking about.

Chobot is in ME3 BECAUSE...

I had a scheduling conflict and wasn't available to model for the art staff.

Dan Allers was supposed to be a hard nosed, Earnest Hemingway type war reporter. Every major mission would end with a "starship troopers" -esque news report from the front lines to inspire the troops back on earth to keep fighting.

In the final battle for earth, Dan Allers would have been killed defending a wounded marine from an oncoming Husk Horde, giving a final farewell to the camera, urging humanity to fight on...

but I had a fantasy baseball draft that day... so they went with boobies.

She licked a PSP. Bioware liked that.
