But why on earth would you want to sell Allison all those traps? Sure you can powerlevel yourself to 25. But courting carpal tunnel by clicking repeatedly on trap triggers to turn them into spring traps is insane. I sold her six traps this past play through just to check it out and the experience made me twitchy. Instead of producing all those traps, why not auto level yourself with a console command?

...[the process] would take 16,000 clicks; that is, about 40 minutes of clicking as fast as humanly possible, and that's only the "craft potion click" part of your fun.
16k clicks? Good. lord.
Maybe I won't do this after all
There's always a thin line between exploiting and flat out cheating using the command console. Personally, judging by the sheer effort of clicking this exploit requires, I'd say it's closer to a legit means of making money than a cheat.

You could also do the Redcliff barmaid trick with the Shale crystals. I was able to get to about 1000g in about 1.5 hours though I did exploit to hit level 20 at Ostagar and was able to repeatedly buy/sell the higher level crystals (brilliant ones).
Doesn't work on the PC version 1.02.

This has been posted a bit, just thought I'd repost it fresh for some others. So far as I know, the only way to get funds to buy the 'good' things in the game (the ones priced 100+ sovereigns!) is crafting Potent Lyrium potions. It feels so hackneyed. Anyway, here's what you need (basically) to start --
You will need Master Herbalism.
You'll need, I think its 11 sovereigns and change to buy the Potent Lyrium Poultice recipe from the Wonders of Thedas shop. That's the most expensive item, fortunately you only need that once.
Then you need flasks, concentrator agents and distillation agents which can each be bought in unlimited quantities at the Gnawed Noble tavern, and huge amounts of Lyrium Dust which you can buy in unlimited quantities in at the Magi tower from the Quartermaster (you do NOT need to do the Magi tower quest first!).
Note the ratio of ingredients ... I think its 4 Lyrium Dust, 2 Concentrator Agents, 2 Distillation Agents and 1 Flask. Everything except the Lyrium Dust you can buy cheaply at Gnawed Noble ... you /can/ buy the flasks cheaper in Dust Town in Orzamar, but its not worth the extra trip to a third site for me, and flasks are a minor component (only one is needed per poultice, compared with two of each of the agents and four of the Lyrium Dust) and most of the cost is in the concentrator and distillation agents, not the flasks. Up to you though.
Anyway, keep that in mind ... equalize how many concentrator and distillation agents you have. Lyrium Dust will wear down twice as fast as the agents and four times as fast as the flasks.
I feel it important to note that it will quickly become a bit of a chore, so I think its best to just do it all at one go ... your money grows exponentially, so if you just do it a little, then go off and buy stuff, then come back to do it again cuz you are low on dough, you'll have to start over since you won't have the funds to buy as many of the ingredients ... it is faster to just keep going until you have enough money to buy all of Ferelden, really ... 1,000 sovereigns has lasted me so far. It took me a few hours to get there, though ... and having to click on Make Poultice a thousand times gets really tiresome, heh.
A lot of other RPGs have seriously easy exploits to make money, so far as I know, aside from exploiting some bugs or something, this is the only way to make unlimited money legitimately. I just don't see how those 100+ sovereign equipment could be bought without doing this. The best 'quest' payout I know of is the lyrium drug-runner deal which can get you 80ish sovereigns ... that can help you get one of the 100-sovereign equipment, but to really afford stuff you need much more.
You can buy every tome to buff your char (and/or party) and really deck yourself out with armor then. I don't even bother looting most corpses unless they have good armor or weapons ... my stock of lyrium and health poultices for my own use is solid with 99 each of the regular and greater varieties (don't even bother with keeping minor poultices anymore, just eats an inventory slot).
Has anyone else found other ways that aren't so choresome to make serious sovereigns?
Without doing the method you talk about, you can get around 400-500 sovereigns in the course of the game. If you're a rogue, there's a reasonable amount of money to be made by doing crime wave quests. Then there's just... the selling of loot, armor mostly. I don't think the designers intended a player to be able to buy ALL the big ticket items.

I consider making and selling Potent Lyrium potions an exploit and akin to cheating due for one main reason:
Only the richest of patrons could ever afford to buy potent lyrium potions at a vendor. With 9,999 etc potent potions in their inventory that would never move (where's the demand?) he's never going to profit. So the vendors are basically giving away their masses of wealth.
The only way really move this out of the cheating realm would be to a) Limit the amount of gold each vendor carries (you'd only be able to do this so often before the vendor runs out of gold) and/orReduce the resale value once the stock reaches a certain point.
Modders for games like Oblivion and Morrowind did this by instigating a supply and demand system. If there's a way to edit the cost value of an item while a player is in the trade screen, and have it update accordingly, then such a system could be engineered. Otherwise, it's not happening.
Edit:
Also, if thisi s such a problem to you guys.... why not just patch the item file for the potion, and make it cost less?

Before you go off to find your brother Trian, leave the royal palace. Find a merchant, and sell off the promise note for the standard 25% of it's value... 25 gold! You don't keep the note when you go to jail so you may as well sell it off.

It's a single player game though and if cheating makes it more fun for you then it's probably the right road for you. Just don't start the post of by implying something so silly as that cheating is needed if you want to get rich and buy the items you want.

That said I found there was plenty of money to be had in this game if you work hard for it. My last playthrough I had enough to buy 4 major items, buy all the gifts available for my entire camp, all grandmaster runes I could find, and enough materials to max out my stock on the lowest health and lyrium potions. By the time I got to the end of the game there wasn't anything left that I still wanted. Using your method to generate money would have allowed me to have it sooner but that's about all. I also don't view that as cheating since you are using an in-game trade to make money. That is completely legit.

Exploit=cheat. Might aswell use the console commands then and save yourself 15960 clicks. Also, there are, ofcourse, plenty of intended ways to get rich enough to buy whatever you want. I felt money was implemented extremly well in this game in that it a) forces you to decide between different big upgrades early onintegrated it well with the character background, plot, side-quests, approval, coercion.

agree. just because its inside the game and adheres to the "rules" dosent mean its not cheating. i guess people like to apease their concious that they are not cheating because they are not using an obivious bug or console commands. its a single player game cheat all you want, however if using a in-game error (exploit) makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside have at it. ill just use the command line and save myself a bunch of time
