I've found a sweet spot that's made most battles fairly easy for me ... a melee tank to mostly ****** the enemy off and draw and absorb their fire ... Allison with Shield Wall and decent equipment fills this well early on, two rogue archers (my MC + Lilian) and a mage with good combat spells (especially frost cone). Having Ranger on at least one of the rogues helps add to the tanking fray.
The deal with this is getting the enemies focused on your tank, and keeping your tank on the opposite side of the enemies from your rogues, and use the mage for heavy support (cone freezing from the side, healing and buffing your tank). Your rogues then get backstab bonuses raining in by firing on the enemies' backsides. Unless Shale is your tank, its good to give your tank the first poison level and have a lot of poisons available to help them deal the damage.
This works well for me even facing powerful bosses, like Flemeth ... Flemeth only did minor damage to my archers or mage (had to have Wynne in that battle of course since I couldn't bring Morrigan) at the very beginning of that fight, after that it was all my tank ... well, actually Allister fell but my Ranger's summoned creature -- a spider -- took over the role and managed to keep Flemeth's attention squarely on it. My MC and Lelian were freely shooting arrows, not a worry in the world, all I had to do was keep an eye out on my spider's health, keeping it buffed and regenerated with Wynne and it was just a matter of time.
Unfortunately having myself tied like this really sucked for the Magi fade quest, since I hadn't really developed good melee skills ... but I relied on my stock of bombs until I got the next morph after the Mouse, which I think I went for the Spirit morph. I found it was great ... with usually only a couple enemies at a go there, I would use the Spirit's imprison, switch abck to my normal self, fight off the other one then finish off the imprisoned one with backstabs.
1 Tank + 2 Rogue Archers + Battlemage ... what's your combo?

Allison? Lillian? Are your eyes/TV screen really bad or did you just nickname them?
Anyway I do
Tank : Templar/Champion
Wynne : Spirit healer/Whatever
Mage : Damage & Crowd control
Rogue : Assassin/Anything else , coup de grace/lethality

I am all for Shield Tank + Bard + Healer + Healer.
I dunno if its most effective, but its certainly the way I like playing the game.

last time i used the 1 tank + 2 rogue archer + battlemage was for the Ser Cautrien fight in earl howe's place.
Sten (fitted as axe + shield tank)
Leliana (pretty standard: bard + archer)
Morrigan (fitted half as healer with all the spirit healer specs + heal, group heal, glyph of warding and forcefield as main others on the healing side. sleep, blizzard, cone of cold, glyph of paralyzing, winters grasp as non specific role main battlemage ones)
own character: archer with bard+ranger spec with a high dosage of non combat, non damage spells
in case you're wondering: yes i was able to slay her, be it in a side room. sten tanked with a set of the army of the legion, a tanking ring and branka's shield with as particular skill wall of shield on besides the aggro skills, glyph of warding helped a lot and forcefield is simply a completely overpowered skill because Ser Cautrien only showed interest in him. i used maybe 2 health potions and about 4 mana potions. mainly morrigan had her work cut out for her with casting mostly the defensive spells, both archers did not even have to move and sten was mainly the armor shield.
there seems to be music in the combination but in my regular group i use shale instead of leliana because i already have my own rogue archer and i tend to fight more head on whenever it seems feasable, which at close range is not the best tactic for archers.

Tank ( Shale/Alistair... usually Alistair ), Champion/Templar ( though the Templar's there just because Ali has to be one ).
Melee rogue ( own character ) Assassin/Duelist
Melee rogue ( Zevran ) Assassin/Duelist
Healer ( wynne ). Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior
I'm a bit bummed that I'm stuck with Wynne :/ whom I'm getting seriously bored with. I hate Morrigan so she's no option at all. WTB 3rd mage NPC. Preferrably someone like XAN because XAN is bloody awesome.
It may be suboptimal setup but I like rogues, they're ossum <3

2 warrior+ 2 mage
champ+templor+arcane warrior+ healer
Morrigan(arcae warrior) start nuke aoe then aoe then cast spirit shield on herself so she is immune to all att and grab all agro
healer cast earth quake center morigan to trap all mob near her and get sustained dam over time.
2 tanks serve as asssit tank and kill adds and left overs

tank: alistair templar (haven't leveled him up in a while) or shale (alistair is better but I like shale)
mage DPS: morrigan shapeshifter/blood mage
mage heal/control: PC mage spirit healer/blood mage
rogue ranged DPS/buff/debuff: leliana bard/duelist
been working well so far, but I can't help but feel I fell into the MMO tank/healz/melee dps/ranged dps trap. oh well, next playthrough I'll jsut have to challenge myself to not follow the convention

tank: Alistair. Gave him the Champion spec but didn't really use any of the templar/champion abilities
mage dps: Morrigan. Gave her basic heal, hexes, lightning tree, Forcefield tree. Always wondered about the point of shapeshifter, shigted into first form once to check looks, never used it in combat. Gave her Spirit Healer as second spec but not any of the spells, she's there to do damage and basic heal is plenty for offhealing on hard
mage healer: PC. Spirit Healer, Cone of Cold, Spell Might/Blizzard to Morrigan's Tempest. Arcane Warrior as second spec but again none of the abilities used
offtank/dps: Sten as 2h warrior or Shale for laughs/conversations.
I brought Leliana (archer) along near the end but wasn't impressed. An off-tank to protect the casters and shatter stuff worked better for me.
Overall, I think the specialisations come too late in the first playthrough. By the time I unlocked them, I was "used" to my party and abilities and didn't want to completely change my party dynamics. And some of the specialisations seem a tad pointless to be honest, but I didn't give them a fair chance either tbh. No decent manual (for shame!) + no respec = no experimenting.

Templars REAL ability is in its specific armor
Theres a templar only breastplate w/ +40% spell resistance , combined with other things it can make a templar invincible to magic , which I've noticed actually helps alot
Well , and Templars final ability is nifty , but "Cleanse area" is absolutley ****ing retarded lol (Friendly fire dispel? THE HELL? lol)

1st game - Mage, mage, warrior, archer
2nd game - rogue, rogue, warrior, mage
1st game was about healing through the damage and wearing them down. 2nd game is about kicking the absolute crap out of them very quickly.
Also I'm usually partial to mages but I'm actually having more fun with my rogue in this game.

Right now I use Alistair as tank, Wynne as healer, Lelianna archer and me as dps mage.
Basically, I usually start the fight with petrify/stonefist with Wynne, Cone of cold/stonefist for me, and this is two shatters right off the bat. Then it's grease/fireball for me along with Earthquake by Wynne..... I mean, with Lelianna as ranged dps picking up the almost dead burning mobs, nothing come even close to me lol
Next playthrough I will try something more challenging

I don't have any combo .. I team with any character. For instance i go with Allistair and leliana FOR redcliff and i pick Oghren and Shale for Ozzammar .. and pick Zevran/Wynne for the dalish ELF
It's not a Mmorpg.I'm not trying to pwn the game with the best setup possible.I'm not trying to have a cookie cutter spec to be able to pvp correctly or the best setup for an epic encounter. .I don,t pack 50 quest so i can level up faster.I'm not trying to keep up with my friend powerleveling and aoe'ing the **** out of everything.
What's the point of pwning everything on sight on a SIngle player game?I play for the story .
If i wanted to pwn ... I would continue to play Dark age of Camelot and pwn with my cookie cutter 8 Man group or play Age of Conan and roll the FOTM class of the moment.

1 bard/archer, 3 mages. everything dies before they reach me. If they survive to melee range, they get locked down by CC spells and bard song.

Tank, Off-tank, Mage, Mage.
Al-Shale is the tank-offtank combo I like best. The mages are my PC (sleep, cold, force, paralysis) and Wynne (healing, Earth, Glyph, and one other primal tree).

3 Mages (PC is an AW/BM and the Tank) + Bard/Ranger. By far the most overpowered combo.

Just finished third play through. Human noble rogue.
Main Rogue/ranger set to steal on site during battle.
Leliana with ranger set to steal on site during battle.
Zeveran with ranger set to steal on site during battle.
Morrigan as spirit healer and some CC spells and animate dead.
All three rogues have paralyze runes in their weapons as well.
Why buy or make potions? I have to sell them.
Along with tons of other ingredients and junk. I have a lot more money than on my first two plays.
Tactics are all custom set. These guys with all their pets mow through everything pretty fast, and steal everything they have. With the exception of Dragons, their damn near invincible.

The only games/characters I haven't deleted are a solo archer, a solo rogue, and a solo caster mage...a solo AW/BM is just a waste of time its so easy. My roommates still have full partys of 3 mages and 1 tank I believe.
I would love a higher difficulty to be put in as dlc.

100% resist tank + 3 mages
bard-rogue for lockpicking/regen + 3 mages
100% resist tank + bard-rogue for lockpicking + 2 mages
In order of efficacy, with 1 and 2 being about tied, I guess.
Personally, I've been running two warriors, a rogue, and a healing mage. I haven't gone out of my way to stack resist on either warrior.

Me - Templar/Champion
Oghren - Berserker/Champion
Sten - Champion
Alistair - Templar/Champion
I fill the tank role and the others are CC/DPS. War Cry spam with Superiority is very effective, but I mostly use the Champions for Rally stack. Every little bit helps. Rolls through the game.

Surely the obvious gamey combo is 3 mages and Bard Archer.

First playthrough - Started on normal, ended up changing to hard post lothering.
PC - Rogue Assassin/Bard minimum dex/str, lethality + Cunning.
Alistair - Templar/Champion
Wynne - Spirit healer/shapeshifter just for the minor stat increases
Morrigan - Shapeshifter/spirit healer. Took group heal on morrigan just for tight spots. Went Mana clash/fireball/cone of cold.
Second playthrough on nightmare - just started last night.
PC - 2 handed warrior going bers/reaver
Havent decided on other party members. I may go completely evil, killing wynne and leliana at first chance.
In that case I'll probably use my PC, Shale or Sten, Zevran, Morrigan as my blood mage or spirit healer.

Morrigan: Shapeshifter/Spirit Mage
Alistar: Templar/Champion
PC: Spirit Mage/Blood Mage
Sten: Champion
Thats the setup I use but it is honestly because I like the characters rather than actually caring about the setup

Since all you need is a tank and healer, I guess this will work just fine.
