Why did they make this a game for adults?

Bioware claimed that their decision not to have naked breasts in this game was an "artistic decision".  Pretty ambigious, so I'm wondering what they really meant by that.  Are they saying that nudity is aesthetically offensive?  That it's something to be ashamed of?

This game presents itself as being for adults, and then fails to deliver a bit of harmless titillation.  I wonder to myself who this decision was made for--the game _still_ isn't suitable for kids and any adult who buys this game probably _expects_ the nudity.

Why did they think that people wearing bras and underpants during sex, or hair conveniently placed to cover a woman's nipples no matter how she moves her head, or werewolves after transforming back into humans still have all their clothes on--is artistically a better thing, as opposed to looking inane?  Bioware promised an adult

No it is not marketed to adults it is an "M" game.  You should be 17 or older to play.  I don't know to many 17, 18, or 19 year olds for that matter,  that are truly adults, regardless of what the law says.

As far as womens breasts are concerned and your frustrations in not being able to see it all... what about the Desire Demon... she is pretty close to your ideal regarding nudity.

Of course as a last resort you could go buy a girlie mag.

This is indeed a disturbing universe.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

I always assumed they were just gay.

Couldn't we say M = the dreaded NC-17 of movie ratings then? then you can really see how tame this title was. This game is PG-13 (or T for games) to me. So yes, I agree with the posters that say it was quite disappointing to see those weird quirks in the game. It breaks the continuity of a scene. it's like listening to music on FM radio. Although I'm sure a few players were wanting to get some titillation in their play-through, I'm on the camp that says it just looks poor (especially the "sticky" hair, looks horrid. just make everyone wear bras then). I find it interesting at the differences of the rating systems between the usa and other countries. Australia probably edited out all the blood and gore as well.

The only censorship bioware cares about is the kind in the united states. Despite having M on the box they fully expect kids to buy it. They don't want the negative publicity of the puritans that have all but taken over this country.

It's odd, but at the same time I'm sure it's part of the reason that they made the toolkit available. There's already many mods for nudity, and I'm sure that one of them must be good at this point.

So there you go. We get the more realistic nudity, they don't get crucified by Fox News. Win/Win.

it is quite amusing too see this kinda thing, but atleast Bioware are pushing the boundaries to bring us a more realistic, less hypocritically prude RPG (tho mass effect did this much better).

tho you do feel like Bioware were like little children daring each other too run into the old neighbours garden...as they run forward and push the boundary and then recoil and sheepishly walk back claiming they wernt really scared to do it but had other motives for chickening out :P

maybe they edited it out of the final cut in fear of Fox news and the army of "nanny nation"

Blah faux news. while i agree the toolkit makes up for it. it's unfortunate that console players are sol. especially with game breaking bugs. kudos for bioware enabling the d/l of the gear you get from using character creator to the console versions, although if you could actually use the characters you made, it would have been more epic.

I would not mind having nudity in the game, but then again, I live in a free county who agrees that nudity is part of everyone and violence is more dangerous then sex.
Norway ;)

It is to bad that country’s today thinks that violence is perfectly ok and nudity is a horror.
Having kids watching people decapitate each other and ripping their gut out with their hands only, that is all OK. Have kids watch people plunge a huge sword or a chainsaw up a mans ars so he screams like nothing one have heard of wail trashing around is all OK to let kids watch.

But showing breasts is a horror. One can’t have children see a nipple. That will hurt them for the rest of their life. Lets rather have them watch men ripping a women apart limb for limb with his bare hands. That is so much more better.

This.

I didn't mind the lack of nudity so much as I did the completely dreadful bras the women are wearing. They really stand out and look just... huge, unnatural and tacked on. Also it's amusing that Morrigan shows more breasts with her robe on than she does with it taken off.

If you're going to cover up female breats, can't you at least make a bra that looks nice?

I take the liberty of expressing my own conclusion. In my opinion, the problem is in the half-way approach. This approach can be compared to an attempt at sitting on two chairs simultaneously. On one hand, it tries to be cool with all the sexual implications in companions' banters, romances, rough jokes etc. and, on the other, it presents final love scene in grubby pants.

I think that the best way of expressing sex was that used in the Witcher. That was really something - no cheap explicit details but astute presentation of lust, pleasure and tenderness. It was serious and mature. Not that I don't like Oghren's banters about polishing good ol' weapon, it was very funny, but it indicates that deeper relationships are not taken so seriously in DA:O.

The difference between DA:O and the Witcher may, if we accept some level of simplification, serve as an example of the contemporary difference between the European and American culture. The Witcher contains much more serious mature romances and much less explicit gore. It sacrifices a bit of rough fun for the sake of a bit of melancholy. It sits on one chair only and does it very well.

In contrast, DA:O presents a rough, unforgiving and mature world of dark fantasy settings. I think we should be very grateful to BioWare for this new standard, for it must taken a big chunk of courage. (Btw another childish brainless NWN 2 and I would perhaps give up gaming.) However, it inevitably bumped into boundaries of depraved morality and thus became split into two worlds: One being the world of adults where the blackness of peoples' heart is much more a threat than all the Darkspawn, and the second being the world of children who must be kept in a belief that princesses don't excrete.

We don't need to see boobs in game??? There is no point???? Unless you are just trying to get your jollies on by looking at some nude pixel????? Also, it is actually programed into the game, the toolset allows you to make the characters nude.

There's no need to see excessive blood and gore either, but it's still in the game because it adds a degree of "realism" (I use that term loosely) to the combat and some people like that sort of thing. I'm not sure what makes nude breasts different in that regards. Again, for me it's not the lack of bare breasts, but how awfully and unnaturally the attempt to cover them up stands out.

Oh ok,, i saw boobs and nude, and kinda zoned out...

I agree, if nudity were in the game, cool... since nudity is not in the game, cool too. I dont mind either way.

Forget that...why have NUDITY specifically?  I'll repeat the question, since you obviously missed it: You're okay with your kids seeing naked breasts, that's fine. But why is the LACK of naked breasts a concern?

The lack of naked breasts (and other parts) is a concern because it artifically cleans up the game world. It's like removing the blood, or having having Zhevran use the phrase "gosh darnit!" when angered.

Maybe you're playing a righteous templar who has vowed celibacy. In his world, a lack of nudity would make sense.

I, on the other hand, am playing a hedonistic rogue. He enjoys wine, wenches and the occasional assassination, and regularly pickpockets people in the streets just to pay for his frequent trips to the brothel. In his world, not encountering nudity makes no sense whatsoever.

Then you just have to be like I was sneaking around to watch porn when I was a teenager.  You know you're in the wrong, but that doesn't mean you'll stop.

Course, the WWW didn't exist when I was a teenager and I had dial-up at about 2600 baud, so downloading pictures was like downloading HD movies nowadays ...

But hey.

>_> Frankly the underwear irks me not because its there but because its out of place. Why on earth would Morrigan put on a bra when she doesn't even wear on in the first place?!?

I mean come on some realism would be nice. Have her back constantly turned towards the camera or something!

Some countries have stricter censorship and classification standards when it comes to nudity and sexual content as opposed to violence and gore.
Bioware are just operating within the world we live in.

That's not true. The german government is against violence and doesn't mind nudity. In fact they endorse indirectly. The EU in general is more pro nudity and against violence. Bioware probably operates more like a north american company with their mind first and foremost on their local fanbase.

The Witcher had those nude cards of women that were censored in the U.S. If EA and Bioware want to conform to the laws of all the countries with their biggest fanbase  then they can just censor/uncensor nudity and violence accordingly. That's not a big of a deal really. They already got bashed on media for the gay sex scene in DA and 'lesbian' one in ME. That happens regularly with games, yet nothing changes really among gamers.
