If your hammer had a conscience and was aware of it's own existance then yes it would be sentient. If your hammer also exhibited strong signalling and self-sustaining abilities then your hammer would be alive.

The geth do both of these things, they are alive and sentient for all purposes and are therefore able to have the same treatment and the same rights we give ourselves.

Your attitude to the nature of life and of synthetic beings is short sighted, immature and hideously selfish - and your attitude to people who can actually understand what makes something alive is also terrible.

It's hard to say what "people" are but all I know is I would honor Legion, and yes I do believe he has a soul. According to dictionary.com thought,feeling and being alive is all you need to have one. Legion made a heroic sacrifice for his "people". I personally chose destroy but that is because you can not prove the Geth or EDI died, my assumption I that they survive with the high EMS along with Shepard, until I am proven wrong this will be cannon to me

You hammer is capable of building its own star fleet, experimenting on organic races via the extranet, sending out an independant scout to make contact with the only being to kill an Old Machine, all independent of you picking it up? The Geth may have been intended to be tools, but they became more. And maybe they aren't all that similar to any other life forms in the galaxy, but they do think. Probably think more in a few minutes time than we think in our whole life times. I think, therefore, I am.

The only way you can definitively say the Geth are not life forms is if you have some means the rest of us are not aware of for determining whether or not someone or something has a soul. As Captain Phillipa Louvois says in the video that has been linked to this thread more than once, I don't even know that I have one. Its a matter of faith to say whether or not a soul even exists. And I cannot definitively say that a machine that is capable of thinking for itself does not have one, any more than I can definitely say that I do.

Lacking such a means to determine whether or not Geth have souls, we can only observe them and compare them to other life forms. They can think. Their whole goal in the universe was to build a super structure capable of housing all of them so they could all think together. They demonstrate self preservation. They use strategy. And they demonstrate a capacity for forgiveness that far exceeds many other races around them. The instant the Geth/Quarian war is over, they hold no grudge what so ever, they immidiately begin helping their creators settle back into Rannoch. Cold unfeeling machines would see no benefit to this, they would see only whether Quarians were useful to them. They aren't. Shepard might be, as an ally against the Old Machines. But the Quarians are nothing to them but a liablity. And yet, they forgive.

Not only are the Geth lifeforms, but I'd say they're more worthy of preserving than several of the organic races we encounter.

The geth are not machines by definition. In order for that to be so, you would have to broaden the definition. The result of which would be broad enough to include us as well. We are consisted of cells all with their own specific function. Biologically humans evolved only with traits which benefit 1 goal the propogation of our gene's , are we machines?

People dont agree with your viewpoint not because we think geth are "cute", but rather we acknowlege that the materials some one/thing is composed of have no effect on sentience.

Well I had to pick between rachni and aralakh so I chose aralakh. The rachni have a history of destroying the galaxy or trying to so that factored a little into the decision. One platoon is unlikely to be a  huge threat after the war is over. Also they were my company (or at least my friend Grunts company) and it seemed less appropriate to sacrifice them for the rachni.

As for the geth well Legion didnt give me much of a choice. Every instance thus far where reaper tech has been used has been an utter disaster. We (and the geth) do not fully comprehend the tech (though Mirandas father seems to do pretty well enough to scare the reapers at least) and yett Legion wants to upload reaper data to the geth. This comes after fighting through a tonne of geth who have REAPER code and are hostile. The last thing I need when Im retaking earth is the reapers taking control of the geth again and having to fight both reapers AND geth.

If Legion had asked for my help defending them from the quarians the Normandy wouldve been their bulwark but as it was I had to reluctantly refuse protection and begrudgingly support the quarians

I chose the Rachni. Wanna know why? I have no right to exterminate a species who were essentialy used as slaves by the Reapers to try and kill the galaxy so it wasn't there fault. Saying that one Krogan company is less dangerous is silly especially a company of the best of the best. The Krogan are much more dangerous than the Rachni. One Krogan company could sire 20,000+ children in just a year who grow rapily and our considered the most dangerous infintry in the galaxy. Oh yeah and they almost destroyed the Galaxy once of their own choice.

Not all instances of using Reaper tech has ended badly. Look at the Reaper IFF and the Mass Relays sure the last one is part of a trap but it also has given us a chance once they got locked out of the Citadel. The Geth using that code are being controled at that time. Legion was using the code and the Reapers couldn't control him. He likely modified it so it couldn't control the others either.

As for the Geth how are we defining people?  How are we defining life?  If we're going strictly by their construction than are apes people because they're almost physically identical to us (brain, heart, stomach, liver, appendix, etc.)?  Or are we going by mental capabilities in which case the Geth far exceed us being able to think and communicate complex ideas much faster than we can.  Or are we going with the, "They don't feel they're not people" argument?  You see that's the problem with saying "X" aren't people, you need to define the limits of what people are and guess what, it's always completely arbitrary.
