You're very fixated on this whole "machine" thing.
What if I scooped your brain out and stuck it in a robot body. Would you no longer be a "person"? Should I then consider you no more alive or important than a toaster?
But I still have a real organic brain then don't I? 
So your personal definition of a "person" would be "anything whatsoever as long as it had an organic brain"?

What is "alive"?
1. it has to be composed of cells and 2. it has to be able reproduce.
Let me interject for just a moment, that definition is extremely dated considering ME is X number of hundreds of years in the future with alien races galor, using that definition to fit every alien race just will not work at all, biology standards are going to be challenged and so are moral and philisophical views.
But the geth fit both of those standards, when you shoot them they "bleed" (And check out their arms, muscle tissue right there), and they can create new run times, thus fitting the reproduction.
