I'm not buying Mass Effect 2 at lunch ether, not after what this DA:O game has done to me. If your using a HD 3870 don't play dragon age.

This is the most broken game I have ever paid for. I asked EA support about this issue and they never replied, what dose that tell you?

well i think that's a bit harsh now. i'm sure they are aware of the problem and working on a fix. or at least thats what i keep telling myself to not go mental... :?
the good bit is that at least i know now that i am not alone and there is no point in dismantling my pc to look for problems..
havent had any different experience using only one core of my cpu. will try windowed mode but i somehow doubt it will help. also not really a fix... <_<

similar problem here. It worked fine for awhile, now it crashes, sometimes after 30 seconds, sometimes after a few hours. I tried updating everything, windows, drivers, the game, tried the game patched, unpatched, tried downgrading Catalyst drivers, updating them. Everything short of wiping my hard drive and reinstalling everything, but I know that's not the problem. I sent Bioware an e-mail telling them of the problem, I was sure to mention the hundreds of pages of other people on their forums trying to get their game to run...I'll let you all know what I hear...if I hear back from them.

I just hope that the Awakening datadisk will be ok and because it's a datadisk, it's something like a hughe patch so it could affect Origins somehow... maybe... i don't know but i hope so

Fix for Crashing to Desktop on
Multi-core systems (also slows the memory leakage)
This applies
especially to AMD processors but also affects some Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2
quads!
For dual core set to CPU 1 only, for quad core set to CPU 2 and 3, for
i7s set to 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Set processor affinity
Open windows Task
Manager. Right click on the Taskbar of your windows vista desktop and select
Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager
Click on
the Processes tab
Click on the Show processes from all users button, at the
bottom
Click the Continue button for UAC prompt
Right click the process
(application) whose processor affinity you want to change
Click Set Affinity

Check the CPU(s) that you want the process (application) to run on and click
OK

I have set this up and have not encountered a crash sence but I allso have not played much hope it helps.

Thanks a bunch, either that or updating my physics driver seemed to do the trick with my AMD 720 BE and 9800 GT.  Now that I at it, the client was likely trying to run off my unlocked 4th core and I've never ran a stablity test for that one.

Oh yeah for those who are still on the fence about ME2 don't worry it's rock solid.  I've played through 3 time so far and never had single crash.

I'm also getting increasingly annoyed with the game crashing sometimes i get hours of play but once it crashes the game crashes about every 10 15 min or so. I did contact ea support just to be told to find a different computer that runs xp 32bit I'm using windows 7 64bit on a system that exceeds all the recomended requirements. Anybody know a way to stop this from happening?

I would email them back and say they did not say on the back of the game box 32 bit only, and demand a refund.  About all you can do.

Back on my game box says XP, Vista, or Windows 7.  So tell them you want your money back or deal with the crashing i guess and get use to that quicksave button.

DA: Origins has run fine for me. Its the expansion, Awakenings that is giving the same system hard lock ups. I have intel2 quad with the nvidia 9800 on Vista 64bit. I had gotten my first crash to hard lock up (full system lock up, only fix is the power button) within the first half hour, so I updated drivers and tried again. Same drama. The tower gets really hot (it has enough cooling, short of taking the side panel off). So, what I have been doing is playing through a quest or two, then stopping. Figuring MAYBE a patch is forthcomming.

It reminds me of the old days and GW, "You have been playing for 1 hour, please take a break." Hmph, my personal best back then was 2 days. :P

Anyone with a fix in mind, lemme know please.

Thank you for posting this i read it after my last post and tried it and it does work aparently the crashes are linked to multiple cores when I just let it run on 1 core it does not crash :)

Okay so this is what I did that eventually led to a working solution.

1. Running W7 Ultimate

2. Install with latest patch (did not reinstall).

3. Run gimped to XP (SP3).

4. Run with Admin privileges.

5. After launch start program manager, set affinity to only 1 CPU.

Game runs with max settings.

Run game with both CPU's even gimped, lowest possible settings in video/audio, and with admin privileges and the game eats up memory, processor speed and slowly dies making it unplayable.

Dx9's APIs got stepped on during that particular crash.

No one will ever know if it was a waste -- in your case.  Since it isn't "broken" for a majority, and you chose to merely vent instead of attempting to seek out support of any kind (from the evidence here in this thread, there is no usable information from you).   Yup.  Looked at your other messages, and found the same low level of seriousness.  You don't seem to want to do anything about the crashing.  (Else you'd have followed through.)

Oh will you please shut up. Don't use words like "majority" because that's impossible to determine unless you've seen some concrete figures or statistics. Stop being an apologist for Bioware, the game is broken and the only fix seems to be to gimp the game with a ridiculous work around which needs to be re-done every time the game is started. This is not an acceptable compromise.

And let's not even get into the fact that it runs like **** using this method.

Let's not compare pedigrees, if you think yours is better, because it is almost certainly not, and your ****** will always stink, no matter how much of it you splatter around everywhere, same as anyone who can only ****** and moan and ignore every logical possibility.  Yes, there have been plenty of problems, same as any game.

Yes, their manner of offering support is weak, ineffectual, and far from being customer oriented.  What did you expect when you saw the EA logos on everything?  But if you are so ignorant when it comes to understanding the market, then you are wasting forum space here.  I said majority, and if you are so ill-informed as to take issue with that, you really need to start seriously cursing out all of the educational institutions that failed you so badly, not me for producing facts you don't enjoy hearing .  .

What does any of that even mean? You know what? I don't care enough to argue with you. "Majority" implies you have some concrete facts or statistics, which you don't, so don't use such words to dress up your rabid fanboy-like, strawman arguments.  As far as I'm concerned, all you can provide is a bit of anecdotal evidence, which isn't sufficient for making sweeping statements.

I concede however that not everybody has problems with this patch, but stop ****ting on people who do. Fly away troll.

Anyone try with sound disabled? I haven't crashed yet with all sound disabled, although it's only been a few play sessions. I'm on Vista 64 and thinking that there might be some issues with Dragon Age and current audio drivers. I'm running the latest IDT High Definition Audio Codec drivers.

I've tried EVERYTHING. Single cores, different computers, different downloads, windowed, Minimum graphics, no sound, no autosaves, rolled-back drivers, beta drivers, Community patches, dancing naked around a statue of Andraste with my CPU's in a bag around my scrotum at Midnite under a full moon, everything I could try well beyond what I should have to to get a game running properly.
