Very quickly, I want to address the strange mechanical sound that we hear when Shepard wakes up on the Citadel. I have heard a very convincing argument that the sound is Shepard's implants restarting his heart. In other words, he died when he hit the beam and his implants revived him upon arrival. This could also explain why he ended up in a different place than Anderson. Corpses go to one location, living people go to another.
Not saying it's absolutely correct, but it seems quite plausible to me. Shepard does appear to sort of jolt awake in that scene. It's plausible enough that I wouldn't count that sound as evidence for IT. It probably serves better as evidence for other theories.
Yeah, it both serves a pragmatic purpose and a figurative purpose: it's a reminder that Shepard is synthetic, it's a reminder that Shepard's on death's doorstep, and it's also a very pointed "shake awake" moment that could be the starting point of a mental framework. I lean towards the first two and indulge the third, currently, but ultimately I definitely buy into the idea of it being an internal resuscitation unit.
Now, the Harbinger "Serve Us" soundbite? THAT is interesting. I want to hear more about that. I'm waiting for someone to clean it up, pitch-change it or whatever, and PROVE that's what Harby is saying. It's a very strong clue.
"(GARBLE-GARBLE) US". It could be
serve us, it could be
save us, it could be
join us, and, hell, it could be
forgive us. I think BioWare's sound designers specifically meant to punctuate the "us", though, and make people speculate on what the other word sounds like. In any event, I think it plays into the nature of the Normandy rescue sequence, and why Harbinger "allowed" the crew to linger before Shepard went up the chute.
