I dont think you know how DEFCON works.

Arian, I know that a nuclear war won't happen for a very long time. I'm not an idiot.Arian Dynas wrote...
Ok fine. Then how about this?
The chances of a nuclear war are astranomically low, America is currently engaged in a state of nuclear disarmament, no other nuclear nation is truly hostile to us, nuclear weapons and missile silos are nearly impossible to penetrate from the outside, NORAD is on a constant watch, we aren't even above Defcon 1 and haven't been for years.
Countries that ARE hostile to the US do not have access to missiles that aren't embarrassingly poorly designed (as in to the point they are more likely to hit themselves than us, if Korea starts gunning for Cuba maybe we should worry, but only on the off chance that they will miss)
There are tons and tons of nuclear interceptors in our air force who are superbly good at their jobs, and simply put, human beings are not wired to push that button on average. EVERYONE except the most insane individuals, whom are no where near the launch codes, would at LEAST hesitate, if not outright refuse.

The human mind itself is what fascinates me most when it comes to deterrence theory. Would a person really launch a nuclear weapon knowing that the fate of humanity depends on this person's decision?
I've already watched wargames.Arian Dynas wrote...

Arian, what you just wrote is exactly that I always try to tell fatalists who believe the world will soon be sent into nuclear oblivion.

Since I constantly discuss the theory of nuclear deterrence with my brother, you really shouldn't believe I'm scared.
The human mind itself is what fascinates me most when it comes to deterrence theory. Would a person really launch a nuclear weapon knowing that the fate of humanity depends on this person's decision?
You know that the world has been at thebrink of nuclear war several times, right?byne wrote...

Yes.
Granted, most people wouldnt, but some would.

"in a nuclear war, there is no winner." That was a very awesome point.
Yes, I'm aware, and I'm happy I'll be gone in about 6 days!byne wrote...

Estebanus, you're aware that you're currently in a country where a sizable chunk of the population not only sincerely believes the world will end in their lifetime, but are looking forward to it, right?

Granted, most people wouldnt, but some would.
And almost each time, it was the decision of a single person who defied the orders of his superiors that saved humanity.
Oh I agree. I loved it!Arian Dynas wrote...

Figured you probably had. Still a good movie anyway.
Of course there are, but these people don't really have the nuclear power to be taken seriously.byne wrote...

Right, but if you think there arent people out there who would push the button to end the world, you're far too optimistic.

Some entertain the notion, some believe it is not the end of the world, merely the Revelation and all that crap. Some are nihilists and all are wrong.
2012 is pure bull**** plain and simple. I could even give a categorized list of reasons why, but I don't care enough to.

Moving on from the real possibility of nuclear war, has anyone ever compiled a list of the many, many quotes about destroying them being the only option throughout all three games? I keep seeing quotes in sigs and general comments on the topic but never a list to illustrate the sheer volume of them.
Calendars don't end. They simply restart, the same way our calendar does each 31st of december.byne wrote...

The list of reasons why 2012 is bull**** should be simply one entry, stating that when our calendars end, we just buy new ones, and hang those up. The world doesnt end.
Why people think the Mayans are any different is beyond me.
