Many of you have probably seen this, but Arian Dynas recommended I put it here also.
It's my new theory I've formed based on information gathered between now and when the EC was released.
This theory is born out of Shepard's marvelous speech about freedom and the right to choose our own fate. And also the Catalyst's puberty taking it's toll when it says "so be it."
The reason being because after such an awesome speech and the catalyst's line, the game just pauses for a bit focusing on Shepard, like something is meant to happen, right around the point the Catalyst says "the cycle continues" with the camera zoomed back. Then the game just kind of drops it on your head that you lost (via Liara's time capsule).
Wouldn't it be cool, if these base 3 endings were because we didn't have all the pieces to the puzzle yet. And so dlc, Omega, Leviathan, other?... adds to it and helps shape better endings.
When I say better, I mean "more win."
We already have the fourth one, which could be acting as a vent for the next one.
So for example..
-|D|-|C|-|S|-
------|---/---
--|Refuse|--
-----/--------
---|S|-|F|---
Success and Fail.
We've already received the fail one being Liara's time capsule. This could be subjugated to just a really low EMS refuse ending cut off line. Then every ending above this line is formed into a single ending (still based on EMS : Success rate) that varies in many different choices from across the three games.
Because Mass Effect is meant to be all about roleplaying and choices. The base endings we got are still endings. What I mean is, because people play their Shepard's differently, they might want a playthrough to compromise with the Catalyst and become a Reaper, Change the galaxy, or if they don't care about the Geth, get a decent ending in itself. Which would be the genius thing as well, because it allows them to see what we'd pick with our canon playthrough, had we only had those options. Then also because it has less to do with the lore and people that didn't play ME1&2 before 3 aren't missing out on things. For instance, our choices from previous games.
This theory also disproves people that complain they sold a game without an ending. Because we did receive "some" of them.
Basically, if this dlc theory holds weight, we could still get astounding endings where we can 'win'.
This theory also assumes they left the Leviathan leaks in the EC on purpose to give us something to hold onto, give us faith something is coming. Because with all the media/consumer outrage that's been going on, to do this by accident would be very slack and lazy, hence a testament to why fans are upset in the first place.
Personal: If this theory is true, and it affects the refuse ending, then it could still be an astounding ending. If not, then I think it's safe to say these endings are permanent. And only then can I have closure.
This idea also dabbles into "speculation" quotes from BioWare, why seek speculation if there's nothing to speculate for? And also the whole thing about closure, and not being able to receive any until we know (for certain) how to view these endings.
ALSO, if there's anything that has been discussed in IT that can relate to this, It would be very welcomed =)
What do you think?
Let the ****storm begin.
@Jade8aby88 - I really hope you're right about this. It would seem to be supported by the additional conversation between Shepard and the Catalyst about Harbinger in the leaked script. And it would enable me to play and enjoy this flipping game again! Seriously I've now spent more time b**ching about it on the forums than actually playing it!
I really don't see how they can integrate the Leviathan plot
without it affecting the ending. If you can do this mission at anytime in the game, Shepard could learn about the catalyst turning on its creators before even going to Thessia.
@Arian - Regarding your dlc theory - do you still think Bioware will hold their nerve, and leave the big reveal to the end of the dlc cycle? Or will they try to quell the negative feedback around the endings by releasing it sooner, and then leave ancilliary stuff like retake Omega until later?
