Was the Ending a Hallucination? - Indoctrination Theory Mark II!

That...I....Words cannot describe the level of Awesome that would be. I've always wanted to play through my Shepards origins, even if it was in flashback form. That'd be the perfect way to tell the player things are a dream/hallucination/indoctrination attempt. Imagine that, seeing your dead parents, old friends, or dead father having them either try to convince you it's all real or tell you to keep fighting! If you don't figure out you stay in wonderland, but if you do you move on to the next phase as you say.
Man I hope Bioware figured this out before you did and actually puts in play.

Hi there, I am usally more a passive lurker, but sympathize heavily with IT. And no matter if it turns out to be true, the theory really got my fantasy working recently. And it baffles me that so many people (maybe Bioware included) apparently don't see the great possibilites the IT offers to expand the game..I'd like to give an example, maybe some of you enjoy the idea as much as I do, though I am not sure if it was brought up before, at least I have never read soemthing like this. Imagine:
Shepard chooses destroy, but I always thought just waking up is rather...lame. I would prefer Shepard to really fight her way out of Harbinger's grip. So after you blew up the tube and made the first step in denying the Reaper's logic and right to exist...you "awake" in one of the these three locations...
1. Colony of Mindoir, just under attack by Batarian Slavers
2. A slum-district in an unknown Mega-City on Earth, ruled by crime and gangs
3. An Alliance Spaceship or Spacestation
I hope you see where I am heading...the next step of Shepard's fight is still inside her head, and leads her to her past. Not the real past though, a twisted, nightmarish version, influenced by the Reapers and Harbinger, who try to lure you away from your path, despair you, use your fears against you. This part would mostly be dialouge, evading combat, or based on renegade/paragon-interrupts etc. You are still a teenager and not a supersoldier after all. The next phase would lead us to more real combat though:
1: Akuze, where you fight actively against hordes of Thresher-Maws and see your whole squad dying
2. Torfan, where you sacrifice your entire team to get the job done and kill all Batarians
3. The Battle of the Skyllian Bliz, where you fight against an army of pirates to save the city
Again, everything here would be twisted and altered, maybe enemies with huskified appearance, and surreal elements. Harbinger would always accompany us like in ME2, mocking us, trying to deceive us to make different choices and leave the path of truth. I would love to see a "nightmarish" version of Hannah Shepard...
The final chapter could be all the same for everyone, and feature an important mission from ME1, maybe Virmire, though totally different this time...like forcing you to sacrifice your current LI no matter what (even if he/she wasn't present then, its a dream, so many possibilites)...
I would love to play such a DLC. Why care for Omega, if you could delve deeper into Shepards mind and past? Only IT would allow us to experience stuff like this in a believable way...
That... was beautiful.
You deserve a standing ovation for that, good sir/madam! That would be truly awesome!

Even Shepard agrees with you!

Yeah, it would be like mixing Mass Effect (awesomeness) with Dead Space (horror). So great and scary.gunslinger_ruiz wrote...

I'm sorry if I repeat myself too much. The scenes with Kaidan at the hospital, and Shepard saving his life are the most emotive things I've ever saw in a videogame. Repeating that but with Kaidan as the one saving him would be... just awesome.

That is sublime. I honestly hope BW will give the last hours of Shepard's life the same level of deep thought and contemplation that you have. It reminds me of the wicked hallucinations Batman suffers from in Arkham Asylum; which only serves to prove that not only can this idea be implemented but it can be executed to form a strong involving narrative about how the fight back to sanity and control can be the hardest battle one can face.

I have a question, what does 5000 mean in the game?
5000 what? EMS?
I do wonder why they bother giving us credits if the game always resets to a save after priority cerberus, credits included.
Hmm.... Good point. Could be for New Game+ but, maybe Bioware gives them to you for use in the future of the game? A hint that things may not end at Earth as we saw? Interesting if anything.
Can't you still buy stuff on the Normandy after Cronos Station? Both weapon upgrades and from the store console?

I think saving Anderson does not give you EMS but changes the treshold required for the breath scene.Lord Luc1fer wrote...
With the whole saving anderson thing giveing you another 1000 EMS, is it possible then get to the citadel with just 3000 EMS, save anderson and get the breath scene?

Thank you, I somehow knew if anywhere on these boards my idea would be appreciated, then here *laughs*
And feel free to use these ideas to confront anyone who states that "indoctrination" is silly and even more stupid than the current ending, has no basis in the game's reality, ultimately leads to nothing, is a bad cop-out-move and bad storytelling etc..
*sigh* It really is a pity we most likely will never see something like this. At least our "choices" in the beginning/character-creation screen would have some impact on the story...and a battle in Shepards mind, beating the Reapers not physically, but mentally, all their lies, deceptions, fales logic and delusions of grandeur...it would be so much more satisfying than simply blow them apart...of course we should do that afterwards anyway...

Wow! I've just gotten an idea! What if the hallucination isn't over and Shepard just goes back to before the attack on Cronos? Or the whole Cerberus/London attack was a dream?
I think that's going too far. IF the hallucination/indoctrination theory is true... I think Extended Cut will simply add the final "battle" against the reapers. Anything more would make Extended Cut too long IMO
Edit: In fact... If the London attack was a dream... why the london breathing scene?
I'm still not sure if the EC is going to show anything conclusive after the breath scene. Technology (processing power) is going forward and what was unfeasible 5 years ago (when they planned for a trilogy with save imprt option) could be done today. So maybe the open ending of ME3 is a hint for the continuation.
It is still possible that the effects of indoctrination are heavy after Cronos Station...it is also possible that London/Earth is not entirely real. As a part of IT, a "Waking Nightmare" has beend discussed where the hallucinations start much ealier than expected but interwoven with reality and it isn't until the indoctrination is at its peak (ending sequence of the game) that clues that soemthing is off become so obvious.

No you need 4k and saving anderson to get it or 5k and lose anderson.

Hmmm... I feel... inspired...
I may write a seperate script for this idea
Gotta finish the other though ugh. I've got everything either great, or at least fine, and I can't weld together the new bits with the old without the Crucible scene, and that I just' can't get to work. It may be a while before I provide another script for the IT's collective amusement.

I don't want my Shepard to die at all... We have the breathing scene, even if IT is false. That's something no one can hide. Even if he's on the Citadel. He's breathing. He's alive.

This is what Is giving me trouble, it's a necessary scene, so I can't cut it, but it doesn't flow or feel right.
7 – The Dogs of Hades
[Camera zooms in to an Alliance Marine charges forward, drops to one knee and signals with his hand an all clear. The rest of the Hammer striketeam comes up behind him, accompanied by the remains of C-Sec and the CDF. The place seems devoid of Keepers, as though they all made a disappearing act. Or they’re otherwise occupied.]
ANDERSON: We’re coming up on the Crucible hook up. According to the plans we got from Alliance Command, there should be a access shaft that will take us straight to the core.
COATES: Sir, are you sure about this? We’re walking right into the enemy’s hands, we could…
[An Alliance marine in front of then raises his fist in a gesture and the entire team comes to a halt.]
CERBERUS TROOPER: Sir, according to the Alliance plans, we should be nearing the access shaft.
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: Good. It was kind of Shepard to pave our way here. Having the Alliance build the Crucible saved us the effort and the supplies.
[Anderson looks down at the Illusive Man, pan into TIM’s face to see it just as he was when we saw him on Chronos Station, whole and entirely human, his mouth curled in distaste. He signals the men of Hammer to surround the Cerberus squad and ambush them.]
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: There’s no need to hide Admiral. We can discuss this civilly.
[The whole of Hammer stands up, Coates and Anderson with their weapons trained on TIM, the rest of the team pointing at the Cerberus squad, with the Cerberus troops pointing back.]
ANDERSON: The Illusive Man…
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: In the flesh. I won’t deny I’m not surprised to see you here. Thank you for opening the arms for us, that was very accommodating of you, saved us the trouble of doing it ourselves.
ANDERSON: What do you want with the Crucible?
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: What I’ve always wanted. Humanity’s ascendance, our rightful place at the galaxy’s head. And one old soldier isn’t going to stop me. Fire!
[The keeper tunnels burst into a raging firefight, Cerberus troops against Alliance Marines, in the confusion, TIM disappears, Coates and Anderson look around frantically for him, before Coates spies an open hatch, if Bailey survived, Anderson signals to him to keep the Cerberus striketeam busy, Bailey acknowledges and Coates and Anderson climb up the hatch.]
[Cut to Coates and Anderson climbing out the hatch, TIM is nowhere to be seen Coates is covering the admiral as he approaches a control panel, right in front of the Reaper Heart/Brain, suddenly, shots ring out, Anderson dives for cover as TIM aims down at him from a gangway above, Coates lines of a shot and TIM dives for cover.]
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: You two, so self-righteous! You completely fail to understand! The Crucible will allow me to control them! I can turn their own process of indoctrination against them! The Crucible will give me the power!
ANDERSON: That’s insane! Listen to yourself! Do you know what you sound like?
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: I know it will work!
[TIM stands up, gun leveled at Anderson]
THE ILLUSIVE MAN: And I don’t need you, or anyone else to believe me.
And unfortunately, I don't know where to take this next. Most frustratingly of all. I'm considering cutting Coates entirely from the scene, just leaving him a back character, since this scene flows so badly.

Yeah... But the current ending has depressed me a lot. I never thought that could be possible, and here I am. Psychologically destroyed by a game's ending. If EC is worse than this... I don't want to be depressed again a week (or more... I don't know when I will recover, just ended ME3 2 days ago). I know I'm probably just a freak but there's no point in trying to hide my feelings.
