I've heard of the possibility of Coates being a reaper agent but nothing about him being a hallucination. Anyone willing to recap the evidence supporting that?
I'm not 100% knowledgable on the subject, but off the top of my head:
- No other characters aside from Shepard are seen directly acknowledging or conversing with Coates.
- Camera highlights a warning sign in the mako right next to Coates' head
- His character just seems to be too "off" to be real.
- There are several other elements (falling scraps of paper, bobbing camera, etc), to suggest that there are dream/hallucination elements creeping into the foreground of Shepard's consciousness in London.

Anderson talks to him, he introduces Coates to Shepard. Also when you walk up to Anderson and Coates before starting the final push they are talking remember.

@all The cases... probably for the next MP dlc? We are collecting enemy's tecnology in MP after all...
Sooooo, anyone up for some MP on PC? My ID is: sixgsix (I know, pretty stupid...)
"So after two days, I still don't have a gun, because those turian things... you can't use theirs."

In the low EMS endings, either destroy or Control are the only "solutions" offered. How does this factor in with IT (which I think is amazingly clever, btw) ???

All I know is that was a piece of evidence that was cited (though it may have been debunked afterwards). I'm not sure whether I believe it or not.

Yeah, and I've thought about both, but I think it was Ivenoidea that pointed out that Shepard and Coats never met before London. And if we go with the, everything we see is an amalgamation of Shepards memories, then Coats being a hallucination doesn't quite fit. There are very few things I am sure about in regards to Coats but I guess Ivenoidea has pulled me more to the Reaper agent side of the argument.HellishFiend wrote...

I am not a prominent theorist here but I have been involved with this thread since early in the first thread and your point about why indoctrinate instead of kill Shepard (via Silent Rogue) reminds me of another theory posed here. That being, that Major Coats is a Reaper agent. In the conversation we have with him in the London FOB Shepard says something like, "I'm just a soldier." To which Coats replies, "You may see yourself that way but to everyone here you are a hero, a symbol of hope." (or words to that effect) If Coats turns out to be a reaper agent then the answer to that question was given to us by the reapers themselves. And they agree with you. Hope that makes sense. Long, long night at work:blink:
I think there are two versions of the Coates theory, arent there? One that states he is one of Shepard's hallucinations (there is in-game evidence to support this somewhat), and one that states he is a Reaper agent. I'm really not sure which, if either, I believe.
If I had to pick one, I might pick the hallucination idea. Mostly because we see him with a camera-highlighted warning sign by his head, similar to vent boy in Vancouver.

I would love to see if that unsympathetic Coates would turn out to be an agent of the Reapers, with all his defeatist-talk and negativity he is almost the exact counterpart to "Keep up hope!"-Shepard...
Shepard wakes up ... and the first thing she sees is Coates, giving us some exposition about what happened and why he is around and nobody else, ...that Shepard has maybe broke free from indoc but will now die, best regards from Harby, you know, Bond-villain-style...of course Shepard can barely overcome him the last minute...it would make for quite a nice entry...
And it would at least give this last-minute-character some purpose! Major Turncoates...

Maybe he will then finally tell my Shepard where he got this shaver of his, since unlike my Shep, he lost his unshaven look from the teaser trailer quite nicely!

Hmm...very interesting indeed. I can't imagine what it is that they'd be playtesting though (I'm assuming it's not the EC).

Yeah, I saw this a couple days ago, I guess it's an invitation to playtest some Mass Effect game, it could be anything from multiplayer to the EC so there's no telling for sure. But the implications are promising.

This was first posted on another site by the guy who got the email, he said he couldn't go because he's out of town and will have a friend of his go instead. That friend promised to tell what's going on there. Not posting the site where it originated since obviously I don't want those 2 guys to be identified.
Although i do have mixed feelings about hearing what goes on there, maybe not knowing it is better...

The only way Coates can be a hallucination is if the hallucination starts before we meet him, since it is Anderson who introduces him and he features in radio chatter during subsequent missions. Having said that, there is something decidedly odd and untrustworthy about him either way. The warning sign could be a little hint that he is indoctrinated.
I do agree some of the things Coates says seem to have a subtle echo of reaper dialogue about them.

I don't know but I don't think so.... Just the Cerberus rifle, the Reeger shotty, and the Krysea Sniper.

i don't think Coates is really all that important, i always thought of him as Bioware's way to put that marine that was shown in big ben during the reveal trailer into the game as they actually say that Coates was in Big Ben in the game.

It might refer to the Prothean assault rifle that comes with "From Ashes", can't remember the name of it. It features in SP, but not MP at the moment. Maybe it'll be part of an MP DLC sometime?

Yeah, this is supposed to be all multiplayer stuff if you look at the names of the files.

That image just implies that there will possibly be future DLC that will add the Protheans and their assault rifle to multiplayer. Nothing to do with indoctrination really.

Actually it does because part of "the truth" DLC included Protheans in multiplayer, so if it's true that there will be protheans in multiplayer than that means that about 2/3 of that rumor was true.... the last 3rd being the SP content.
