But it might be a dead end cause the game was designed to be more movie-like. This might be the reason of that change in comparison to the previous games. BioWare went forward with design that utilizes modern technology.

I ask that you keep an open mind and remember how strongly Bioware emphasized that they want us to feel what Shepard is feeling. To feel things from his perspective. Thus it becomes plausible that by forcing Shepard to display a certain emotion or reaction, Bioware could possibly be trying to imply that Shepard himself is being forced to display those emotions/reactions by indoctrination, and us along with him.

You mean after 2 immersive games players become connected to Shepard mentally and there is an emotional feedback. It's like you anticipate that Shepard expresses your emotions. But the side effect is that you start to express Shepard's emotions if he shows them (even if you didn't tell him to do so). It's as if you were identifying yourself as Shepard (at least subconsciously).

Yeah, that is essentially what I'm saying. And it may have been what Bioware was counting on. After two games of having complete and utter control over Shepard's every emotional display, we become accustomed to feeling what he feels (since we already felt that way anyway). If that same effect carries over to part 3, where we are forced into certain emotions, if we continue to feel the emotions that Shepard displays, it serves the purpose of IT quite effectively.

We did not have complete control of Shepard at all. For instance, we were forced to work with Cerberus in game 2 and skeptically at that, and even if you enjoyed it and kept the base for TIM you were forced to quit Cerberus and join the Alliance in game 3. You may not want to believe it but Shepard is Shepard and you're just along for the ride.

Excerpt from the Origin section:

In reality, Athame was not a mythical goddess but a guise crafted by the Protheans. During the height of their empire, the Protheans discovered the asari and judged that they had potential as leaders for the races of the next cycle against the Reapers. They intervened in asari development by creating the myth of a goddess, Athame, who was imparting divine gifts and knowledge through her guides, Janiri and Lucen, who were actually Protheans. Among those "gifts" was the asari's natural ability to develop biotics, which was in reality the product of years of Prothean genetic research and manipulation.

Still an interesting coincidence that asari architecture has these Reaper peaks, as if they're culture is derived from worshipping the Reapers. After all, if it were the Protheans, then there would be more rectangular structures, like Javik's memory shard or the buildings we see in the From Ashes flashbacks.

Whoa, slow down... remember. All tech and obviously some of the architecture of said tech descends from Reaper design. The Asari got the influences from the Prothians, The Prothians from the Innusanon or whatever (tentacle faced guys) on Ilos and perhaps other pre Prothian cycle species... go back to Earth and look at the buildings. They have triangular spire shaped building too. One can be seen in the distance, across the river from where the kid was playing. ...from where the kid was supposedly playing, given the park was a figment of Sheps imagination...

Ok, slowing down. ^_^

Maybe the architecture is a big stretch, since there are buildings on earth that have similar structure, that is in general a design you'll find in real world architecture models for very high skyskrapers. It has several static advantanges that way.
But anyway, maybe I'll stay with Megumi's screenshots from the monastry she linked on the last page. This curved triangle seems to be their symbol. Maybe they don't have to be related to Prothean styles, if the Protheans wanted to interfere with culture as little as possible -- which is odd, because why stop there, if you already started experimenting with asari genetics.

But nonetheless, as Megumi noted, the Prothean Beacon on Thessia still might have been somehow altered by the Reapers.

Wait wait! more misinformation? When did the Prothians mess with Asari genetics?

If this is about Biotic that's total misinformation. Every form of life on Thessia has biotic abilities or Eezo resistance because the planet is inherently rich with Eezo. The Prothians may have trained the Asari in how to use Biotics, but no way in hell did they 'mod' them to develop Eezo receptors. It seems all sapient life exposed to Eezo develops Biotics. Humans are the proof in the pudding... no genemods needed.

If Asari had to be modded to use Biotics they would never have existed. The bonding/melding processes is a result of Eezo/Biotics. They would have never developed the way they did without Eezo on the planet. It's also, based on the Dark Energy hypothesis, why the Reapers are destroying them instead of harvesting them. Their very existence would result in Dark Energy build up.

Do you remember the "Batchelor Party" conversation in ME2, where it's suggested that the asari manipulate the minds of other species on a subconscious level, hence everyone finding them attractive? (Y'know, asides them being a race entirely composed of busty blue bisexual hotties...)

I wonder if the mental manipulation thing could have something to do with this...

Manipulation on such a scale would make the asari a truly worthy opponent of the Reapers, they would be basically the organic Reapers, if you wish.

Hm...and here's me guessing whether the Protheans had that in mind by interfering with the asari?

Does Liara's "gift" make a little more sense now? ;)

I think you may be confusing emotional display with plot-driven choices. We did have complete control over Shepard's emotional displays in part 1 and 2.

Uh, I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm fairly certain that the Protheans DID genetically modify the Asari so they would have Biotics.  Take Javik with you on Thessia, and he says that was one of the things they gave the Asari.

And the more you 'the player' resist, the more the game feels off. That's the point... to get your spidy senses going.

Unfortunately, some just assume it's OOC! bad writing, this sucks... and jump out of the submersion. It may have legitimately been a little too subtle in some ways, but they almost mattered getting us to over look the oddities with an awesome moment a few minutes later. Awesome moments were just as important as the weird ones.

I knew about that Bachelor's party. That's still (somehow) ok, but manipulating others into seeing things on the scales of objects different...I don't know yet.

But the fact that you can get Liara's gift even without her being your LI...manipulation could be the intention. The question is, was that manipulation to help Shepard or...

LOL. No way!

But seriously, Desmond's condition is not as impossible as it might seem. With all the virtual/augmented reality hardware in the near future. Human brain shows great plasticity and adaptive abilities given enough time and adequate stimuli.

I think you're on to something. I think synthesis was the indoc option for those (like me) who got really emotionally invested in the game and felt those emotions. How could one of these people could choose to wipe out the geth and EDI? This kind of person would also probably be willing to sacrifice their Shepard for that fairy tale happy ending we're told about wiht synthesis.

For those who failed to get emotionally invested, possibly the more renegade types (and heck, also those paragon types who would assume blue=good/paragon) we were given the control option. Save the earth, save the galaxy, and control all the power of the reapers' technology, hell, we can just use them to rebuild the relay network. Win! Right?

Almost every type of player is steered away from Destroy unless you keep reminding self what the ultimate goal was all along and/or realize the BS starbinger is feeding you.

You are making an assumption. He never said we genetically alter you, providing you with biotic powers. They were primitives... would you give humans, who had not even learned to sow fields, Biotic abilities if they didn't have them to a degree already. Showing someone how to plant fields based on season and use Biotics for more than mating is not Genemoding them.

Please read the Codex entry on Thessia.

Yep, exactly. I fell into the bolded category. The nail in the coffin was Shepard saying "So, the Illusive Man was right after all...". That was like a signed permission slip to be greedy and take it all.

Nowhere is this highlighted better than in the pro-control folk who use sigs like "Assuming Direct Control" with a big blue paragon emblem, or "I chose to use the Reapers for good".

Uh, I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm fairly certain that the Protheans DID genetically modify the Asari so they would have Biotics.  Take Javik with you on Thessia, and he says that was one of the things they gave the Asari.

The Prothians TAUGHT them how to use them effectively.... did they give them the ability to eat too, along with those seeds.

But the Codex doesn't take into account the revelations that take place on Thessia with Javik.  I could swear that I remember hearing dialogue from him about how the Goddess Athame gave the Asari the gift of Biotics after years of genetic research.

From the Mass Effect wiki:

Among those "gifts" was the asari's natural ability to develop biotics, which was in reality the product of years of Prothean genetic research and manipulation.

@Rosewind:

Does Liara's "gift" make a little more sense now? ;)

Mother of god.jpg

I knew about that Bachelor's party. That's still (somehow) ok, but manipulating others into seeing things on the scales of objects different...I don't know yet.

But the fact that you can get Liara's gift even without her being your LI...manipulation could be the intention. The question is, was that manipulation to help Shepard or...

She having his/her baby now :P a Spawn of Shepard lol

Sorry. I thought the sideways emoticon made it clear that it was a joke (with a little bit of wishful thinking though).

That was the fraction of a second I was talking about, the time between the text and the emoticon.:( I know it's just a joke, but that would be awesome if we did get any more info.
