Points of fact;
-Fergus is a playboy[he makes a few mentions about wenches...and well look at him...hes a Rogue all the way]...and being tired down to a family can cramp your style
-He makes a statement to his son about "seeing a real sword soon"!
-He leaves with the army just hours before Howes attack...and Howe isnt exactly a master tactician...who do you think really arranged this
-He then is a "coma"...and doesnt wake up until the war is over and virtaully everyone who stood in his way are dead or gone, or anyone who could point the finger at him
-And his lands are returned to his family, with some Grey Warden support to boot.
Now he gets to rule the land and bed anyone he wants...with really only one other who compares to him...Tegan, mate...ld keep my eye open if l was you.
Fergus, my own brother...you bastard!

Let's not forget the oddly convenient story that he woke up in a Chasind camp and escaped. Chasinds are not easy to track down as they can move their tribe around a lot sometimes. His mention of escape suggests he's willing to fortify the unfair stereotype that Chasind are uncivilized brutes even though his tale does not include anything about who rescued him and cured him. (If he was indeed with the Chasind, though that could be doubtful, he would not have a need to "sneak away" from his saviors.)
His story is more holey than Andraste's Ashes.

What does he gain from killing his wife and son though? Ok, maybe killing his wife can be beneficial, but what about his son?
No one to avenge his crimes against the Family?
Or to be the Heir and rightful threat to his rule?

His son is a moron and a stain on his lineage?
"Sword of Truthiness" indeed.

A group of Chasind found Fergus wandering around the Wilds, still recovering from a concussion and the mental horror of playing Flemmeths sex slave, and took pity upon him since he'd managed to learn their complicated sign language just by quickly skimming through a book that mentioned them (it's a family talent). they nursed him back into health and decided to sell him back to Flemmeth, only to find that she'd vanished, leaving no clue except a great big dragon corpse behind. Fergus then blindfolded himself, hoping that if he couldn't see them then they couldn't see him, and ran away. the Chasind were too busy laughing to give chase. Fergus, having stolen some money from the Chasind, decided to return to the Pearl, only to stumble into Denerim during a celebration in your honour
to avoid embarrassment he only told the short version of his adventures

in actual fact Fergus fled Ostagar before the battle even began and headed to Denerim's Pearl. Alas, you almost ran into him but he drunkenly stumbled out of the Pearl moments before you entered and went to the Chantry to beg forgiveness (and healing for his hangover and STDs). sadly, in his inebriated condition, he tripped and fell down the well. he later woke up with three corpses piled on top of him, and used them to climb out. he was spotted by Howe's guards, but they bravely ran away. Fergus then began the long walk back to Ostagar to see if the battle was yet won, when he was ambushed by bandits. the bandits were then ambushed by darkspawn and Fergus escaped, muttering that his day could not possibly get any worse. he finally made his way to Ostagar only to find it overrun with Darkspawn, so he fled into the Wilds where he was set upon by wolves. he was rescued by an elderly witch who healed him and had her way with him until he regained enough strength to escape, once again narrowly avoiding crossing your path as you arrived mere moments later to confront Flemmeth

Hmm you make a convincing case, with well-reasoned arguments that I cannot seem to refute.

Amusing but I'll point out he's definitely not a Rogue as he is shown with a sword and shield.
Not that kind of Rogue...and um, the kind your thinking of can wear shields.
