Tried out for first time today in multi-player --could heard some folks talking occasionally. Do I just need to connect my earphone/speaker (which I haven't tried yet) so I can speak with team members, or are there other things I should be doing?

You need to confirm/test that your microphone is working and press (and hold) the Tab key (by default) to talk. The "hold to talk" key binding is configurable.
Edit: I am assuming you are using PC. Not sure what the controls are for 360 and PS3.
