Alright, so I want to play a insanity run, but I want it to be on NG+ so I get all of the bonuses that come with it. So my plan is to import my character from me2 and do a quick speedrun on combat mode, and then take THAT game and do NG+ on insanity.
Now, I have a question about weapon upgrades. So if I want a weapon to be level X in the second playthrough, does that mean that I must upgrade the weapon to level V in the first? Or will I be able to level up a weapon from level I to VII all in one go and collect the weapon to finish it off? The wiki is vague and makes it sound like I can only upgrade weapons twice in the second playthough.

Based on my experience you get three extra levels each time you "find" the weapon in question. If this three level boost is not enough you can always purchase the remaining levels to reach ten from the Normandy.

it's gonna take more then four playthroughs to gather the credits to upgrade every weapon to X and the weapons disapear in the third playthrough, so you can only find each weapon during the first and second playthrough

You must upgrade to level V in the first playthrough. Without that, you will not be able to reach level X in the second.

Get your weapons maxed on the first play through, then purchase the next two levels. This way when you find the weapon again it will get upgraded to level X. This worked for me.

So I MUST max the upgrade on all guns I'm interested in during the first playthrough? Thank you. That was what I was trying to ask for.

Yes, you must. Here's how it works; You can pick up the weapon, and upgrade to level V, the first time.

If you don't do that, then the weapon remains at level I; when you pick it up in the second game, it automatically upgrades three levels to level IV, and then you can purchase two more upgrades, which brings it to level VI. The game then locks you out of purchasing any more upgrades for that weapon.

This is also why the Predator (the basic starting pistol Anderson gives you) can't be upgraded to level X. Because it's your starting pistol, it doesn't count as being "picked up." The second playthrough gives you the pistol at whatever level you upgraded it to, and then you can buy two more levels. Since upgrading is capped at V in the first playthrough, you can only bring the Predator up to level VII in the second.

That's stupid. We should be able to max out a gun from level I from the second playthrough. That's a dumb limitation.

It isn't a limitation if you use Gibbed editor and just give yourself some credits. I did this on my NG++ playthrough just to ensure I bought all of the armor and maxed out the guns.

Unless we're playing entirely different games, that is untrue.

You are required to purchase a total of six upgrades (four for the Mattock if you played Overlord and saved David), the remaining four are unlocked by finding the weapon twice. Any gun can reach level X in a NG+, regardless of how you purchased the upgrades:

- Raising it to level V in the first playthrough, then to VII by purchasing upgrades in a NG+ before finding it again to raise it finally to level X (I did this with the Particle Rifle.)
- Raising it to level V in the first playthrough, finding it again to bring it up to VIII and then purchasing the final two upgrades to raise it to level X (I did this with the Phalanx.)
- Leaving it at level I until NG+, then raising it directly to VII by purchasing upgrades before finding it again and raising it to X (I did this with the Locust.)
- Leaving it at level I until NG+, finding it again to raise it to IV then purchasing upgrades all the way up to level X (I did this with the Raptor.)

I did all of those in a single NG+, no gun was ever blocked from reaching level X. Additionally, you can buy the guns again from the Citadel stores if you miss them in the NG+ and they will still add three levels as usual.

Great. More conflicting data. I'm more inclined to believe you, though. And how about armor and weapon mods? Is there anything weird about them? Can they go past level V?

Unfortunately I was a derp and as I completed my super-insanity-ultimate renagade-explore every single ****ing planet and get every pointless upgrade-epic me2 playthrough I decided to clean out old games and deleted it right before importing it to me3, so I have plenty of time to wait for answers as I... replay everything...

Can I add an additional question: do you need to buy the Spectre weapons in your first play-through if you want to get them to level X? I'm just about to pay my final visit to the citadel and have just enough credits to buy all three, or buy a couple and upgrade to rank V. Advice?

You do not have to acquire the weapon whatsoever in the first game to get it to level X in NG+. However, you can only get it to Level X in NG+ if you find it or buy it there.

There are 2 types of exceptions. The first are Spectre terminal guns, DLC guns, or the N7's which will simply be capped at Level V in the first game and Level X in the second (no need to find or buy twice).

The other exception is the Predator, which does not seem to be awarded in the NG+ prologue correctly and will probably be stuck at Level VII for you in NG+.

You do not have to upgrade a weapon in the first game to get it to X in NG+. You do not even have to acquire it in the first game to get it to Level X. Tested this myself with the Eviscerator, which I missed in Grissom in my first game.

Mods for weapons are capped at Level V. You can max all of them in the first game, as long as you don't miss them on the missions.

Thanks for the reply capn. Do you know whether credits are kept over to the next game? Like I said, I've got just over 700K burning a hole in my space-pocket and I'm not sure how to go about spending it: upgrade a few of the found weapons, pick up the spectre triple, pimp out my cabin and other pointless frippery, or keep ahold of it so that I can get the 10% off bonuses in NG+ and more bang for my buck...

Thanks

You should get to keep your credits, if I remember. But there really isn't anything special to buy in NG+ to warrant saving it since your weapons and mods carry over as they are, as well as your armor pieces.

Interesting. In my NG+, on the PC, I do not recall being able to buy more than two levels on any weapon.
