a. Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2GHz
b. 4GB RAM
Mobile Intel 4 Series   8.15.10.2302   igdump32

I am using Windows 8

I don't really know where to find the rest of my computer information (I will be buying Mass Effect 2 and 3 for PS3 to hopefully avoid computer problems!)

My problem...

I have never had a problem with the game freezing on the computer I am using (over 10 hours of game time)
Mass Effect 1
The Citadel is being attacked by the Geth.
I have just been transported from the llos system, following Saren through the conduit. The Mako flies into the Citadel, I exit the mako, fight three husk, talk to the purple AI lady, and enter the elevator. I watch the cut scene, then I am outside the elevator. As soon as I walk down the ramp, the geth break some glass and the game freezes. This has happened 5-10 times. I tried using an older save (on llos, another world) but when I got to the point, it froze again.
How can I get past this point?

I really appreciate any help :)

AFAIK, there is no substitute for a proper graphics card from a gaming-oriented company. Intel doesn't care about gaming at all, and only tried making an actual card once. They failed.

I was afraid that would be the problem.

Is it safe to assume that I won't be able to get past this point in the story? Like I mentioned, it had been running well up to this point, quick loading, no freezing, etc

I have a PS3, so I was hoping to beat Mass Effect 1 PC then play MS2 on the PS3 haha

You're not going to enjoy the full story, I don't think.  Laptops notoriously are inadequately cooled, and those with no real video cards included are the worst of all.  No matter how high powered of a laptop "cooler tray" you get, the overstresses loaded onto an Intel video chip by attempting to game with it are much worse than the system can handle.  Over time, and that's where the variation exists, how fast it is damaged varies from model to model, and it will be damaged.

The overheat affects almost every part of a laptop; it's so compact that even if the processor is only reduced in efficiency (especially video efficiency), the RAM and other thermal-sensitve components will degenerate even faster.

There very well may have been gimmicked games of ME-1 played with the exact model laptop you have, that you can track down somewhere, and apply whatever tricks are involved, but it just means that instead of getting a couple of years of use from the machine, you'll get half of that, or one-third.

Wow, thank you so much for the info! I literally knew none of that.

I'n not too worried about the damage that has been done, I'm playing on an old sony vaio that's something like 4-5 years old (which, oddly enough, works better than my new dell - not planning on buying dell again!)

I got the dell through work, so I didn't really have a choice of compy. I was able to fix my sony with a $12 cord off ebay, amazingly I didn't break the computer when taking it apart haha

Anyway, I ordered Mass Effect 2 for PS3, I'll just have to find a good summary of the ME1 online.

Thanks again!

There have been numerous improvements made to the laptop standard in that time period, with the least improvement having been onboard graphics, but a late model Dell SHOULD outperform any laptop as old as you believe your Sony to be. (My information is that Toshiba, among major brands, offers the best cooling, and thus, the best long-term game capability. Asus was less well-known before recent efforts to compete with the big players were successful; they also have better than average specifications to perform in a gaming situation.)

You can never go wrong choosing Sager, but you will have to pay the going rate (not cheap) for one of those.
