Oh man, Social Darwinism, creationism, enslavement of lesser races....it's like we've walked into a forum from the Gilded Age.

Gilded Age was actually the best period in history of USA and possibly Humanity as a whole. Just check how many inventions were made during that brief period of time. Economic advancement on unprecedented level. Sad we do not live like that anymore.

Yep Slavery and the oppression of women, massive high point for humanity. Also regarding this --> "Just check how many inventions were made during that brief period of time. Economic advancement on unprecedented level" the last 20 years want a word with you.

Last 20 years are based on Gilded Age technologies.

For every major scientific advancement you can name from that period, I can name ten from the last hundred years, or even just the 21st century.

Yup and those inventions were based on the work before, that's how advancement works. You give me examples I'll give you the forerunner technologies.

I'd like to see you try and run the internet without the theory of general relativity, for example.

Or something as mundane as cell phones, you'd be s*** out of luck without quantum mechanics.

I am not claiming that in this period we were more technologically advanced than today or that we had more inventions than today. I talk about % rate of improvement compared to previous ones. While 20th century advancement was steady, Gilded Age was a huge push forward, like a meteor.

Yeah because the invention of the microchip, computers and internet in the late 20th/early 21st century didn't spark a MASSIVE boom in the rate of technological advancement. Its not like we didn't have internet connections and phones that required no cables or screens that can be touched to interact with rather than using keyboards 10 years ago and do now....oh wait.

I suggest you to try to comprehend my words again without your obvious bias generated by my negative image in your brain, which is unjustified, in my opinion.

Marvels of today are the results of Gilded Age philosophy put in place back then. Imagine how much more we could achieve if this philosophy would work for the whole 20th century? Or today? We could already be conquering stars...

Moore's Law.

In 20 years we've gone from 2kb memory cards the size of your head to silicon transistors the size of atoms. And every year we're finding more ways than the previous to almost double the capacity of transistors in the same square inch without increasing load power loss, but increasing processing power and memory capacity substantially.

The rate of technological improvement is moving at an exponential rate, it has been for the last thousand years. The Gilded Age produced so many advancements because society was finally realising the possibilities of theories and ideas invented centuries beforehand (da Vinci single-handedly proposed many designs to which this day we use in engineering), and having the resources and knowledge to implement them.

If that philosophy had been in place the whole 20th century the world would be a ****tier place.

I was surprised to see this pop back up on the front page, though I figured it would get worse. What part of abandon thread was misunderstood? Religion and Politics are taboo here. There is no winning in this discussion. Cease, desist, do not pass go, do not collect $200 run for the hills and don't look back.

Well for a start the wave-particle duality helped design wireless transmission when it was realised electrons could be converted into waves and transmitted in that fashion across hundreds of miles of terrain. Quantum mechanics is the nature of everything - it is the study of all matter and energy in the universe at the atomic (quanta) level.

Well, you can't actually get satellites to function properly without relativity, for one thing.

Things as fundamental as transistors are based on QM, so pretty much all modern electronics wouldn't work without it.
