Why is Revive a Ground Target rather than a Character Target?

I'm curious as to theories (and perhaps even a real fact or two) as to why the designers decided to make Revive a Ground Target rather than a Character target.  Obviously we have the capability to target individual characters -- we do so all the time for other spells -- so why not for Revive?

Most of the time, I don't bother with Revive.  Battles are generally not long enough to warrant using it, even if a team member or two (or three!) falls.  Whoever is left is usually strong enough (or tenacious enough) to finish out the battle and then we just wait for the fallen to stand back up.  However, every now and then, we run into a longish battle and it would be nice to Revive.  Sadly, in the chaotic jumble of bodies, it's often difficult to determine where the fallen mate is (the name is not over the body).

Does anyone know the reasoning behind making Revive a Ground spell?   Was it perhaps because, originally, fallen members did not auto-revive at the end of battles?   Additionally, I'm assuming that, since it is a Ground spell, that is the reasoning for it not being tactic-able (there is no Ally: Status: Unconscience).

Please note:  this is NOT game-breaking by any stretch.  It's not even a complaint.  I'm merely curious as to the thought process behind the decision.

If 2 allies fall close to each other they can both be revived with one spell cast. This balances the extremely long cool down time that Revive has.

It's an AoE. You can revive multiple targets if they're near each other.

But you can target specific members, at least on PC, by clicking the portrait as your target.

You can revive multiple fallen characters with it in one cast, provided they're close enough of each other. So yeah, it being target-ground basically allows you to revive an extra party member sometimes.

Edit - ninja'd :P

If you only have one character to revive, click revive, hover over dead character's portrait on the top left screen, then click. Saves you the problem of finding that person's corpse, though admittedly, I dunno if the same can be done on consoles.

Now reviving two or more characters is a bit of a problem due to the absurd number of corpses, even on the PC. But considering Revive's smallish AoE effect, you probably won't be able to revive both majority of the times anyway, so I wouldn't even bother and just revive one.

EDIT: Alternatively, you can click Revive, hover over a dead character's portrait, and it should show where that character's corpse is (it is centred on the AoE circle displayed on screen). Do the same for the second and/or third dead member, and you should be able to roughly judge whether you can revive more than 1 corpse in one shot.

Hmmmm, 360 here. I don't think we can select the fallen's portrait. If I recall, we just get the big Revive Ring on the ground and have to maneuver it around to wherever we think the body is. I don't think it even highlights the portraits. Would be nice if the portrait flashed or something to indicate that we were in the proper place.

Looks like this is another area where PC version and 360 version don't match. Sounds like it's a tad easier on PC. Oh well.

I  agree that the implimentation is a bit wonky, though Im glad it's an AoE, it can be a little tough to find the right character amidst the slew of bodies strewn on the ground.

I think the idea of a flashing portrait is a good one, so we consolers have some idea if we're targetting the right person.

I think the purpose of making it AoE was that you can revive multiple party members. When fighting tough enemies like Revenants or Dragons this can be really useful as usually your party members are close enough to all be revived.
