I can see this might be a stupid question but what is their objective?

The old gods evidentally don't have a choice in this, they're victims of the taint too.

What the darkspawn overall want.. well, destroy everything it seems. Typical dark horde MO.

I was hoping we'd find out in DA:O, cause if we don't, that either means:
A) We'll probably have another game centered around Darkspawn *yawn* or my favorite personal favorite,
B) Perhaps a game answering that question through other villians/omg giant conspiracy :), or perhaps,
C) Developers don't know and neither will we.

Well if death and destruction were their only objective, they would actually run out of things to do once every living thing was dead and the blight spread to all corners of the world.

The majority of the darkspawn (minions) are mindless and are possibly acting on their instincts to destroy. But if you read the book, at least one or some darkspawn can have agendas of their own. I wonder who is/are calling the shots here. The old gods like The Angry One said didn't seem to have a choice... although there is no explanation as to why the darkspawn seeks them like moths to flame.

The blight and demons are sheer destructive forces. The Old Gods just want Firefly back.

When the old gods were banished, they still called through to the humans on the surface and tainted them. That is how the first darkspawn were brought into being. After that, the old gods just got tired and slept, not knowing that what they created would rob them of their sleep.

That said, once they awaken, they control the darkspawn which is why the Grey Wardens also dream about the archdemon -> when it is communicating with the darkspawn horde.

Probably just world domination. Eliminate all opposition.

The darkspawn seek the old gods because tainting them into becoming Archdemons makes them a force that threatens the entire planet. That much is clear.

Sure they'd run out of things to do if they killed everything but who knows, maybe they just hate life.

Nobody really knows. Well except the Bioware writers, but they won't reveal such an important mystery of the setting so soon.

Maybe they don't actually have an objective at all. Maybe they just follow a set of very basic impulses (use what you need to reproduce and destroy everything else) that were imprinted on their hive mind completely accidentally by the misfiring magic that created them.

Okay, the real answer is probably a bit more dramatic than that, but from our current perspective, we wouldn't know the difference, would we?

Not even Chantry dogma states that the old gods tainted people.
The legend says that people tainted themselves after raiding the Golden City, perhaps at the behest of the old gods but the taint wasn't their intention.

What really happened probably has even less to do with the old gods than that.

Pretty much the same things humans (especially the Chantry) want.

My theory is that there is a secret puppeteer somewhere. And I WON'T call him/her Maker. Thing is, the whole "kill or transform everyone" thing sounds like a big-time revenge plan. Makes me think of Arlathan elves. They would have all reason to do so. And they would have to power to do so. Maybe one of them didn't die yet, eh? Since they're theoretically immortal. And revenge would be a good reason not to sleep... Ah who knows. Maybe I'm just whack. Did I already say that I think the mirrors are more than mere means of communication?

If the Darkspawn were so well packed and led, they´d show some examples of tactics and global strategy on their Blights and seems like they basicly assault massively and that´s it.

To me they´re an infection and infections serve no further purpose than eventually killing the host.

This seems most likely, the majority of darkspawn actions seems dictated by instinct, and given that they corrupt anything they come near it seems the taint itself is the real driving force, a bit like rabies driving animals to behave strangely and aggressively.

They have a hive-mind. They need someone being able to control their hive-mind, the dragon. Since dragons seem to be capable of telepathy. So, they need to taint a dragon to control the hive-mind. Maybe that someone behind all of this isn't capable of controlling the masses of darkspawn he needs, so he let's them/smaller groups of them dig for hibernating dragons.
Yes, just a weird theory out of boredom... *shrugs*

I like the idea of elven revenge, especially as I think the Black City is Arlathan and the old gods seem responsible for the fall of elven rule.

It probably discriminates against no one, not even elves as it's gone way out of control.

All they want is a sandwich. And kittens. No wait, that's demons.

Their goal is to just kill anyone that looks funny.

But in all seriousness why they want to corrupt and kill everything is never explained, and we probably wont know until we take a trip to the Black City. Or Mr. Gaider's mind, whichever comes first.

Maybe the darkspawns were origionaly a dragon cult-gone-wrong? If you read the codex entery on dragon cults it says that the cultists get stronger, faster and a desire to kill things. And, to me, it sounds almsot like they got some sort of hive minds aswell. And that could explain why they seek out sleeping Old Gods/Very Large High Dragons down in the deep roads, and also why you get to kill a couple of "Dragon thralls" at the end of the game.

That's my theory.

Yeah I agree on that! Or well, not maybe the original Arlathan, but maybe a try to rescue the city and the elves, that's gone a bit wrong, so the essence of the town ended up in the fade, but not the people. It got "tainted" afterwards, maybe in a tevinter try of destroying or inhabiting or examining it, after they found out the elves were capable of a kind of magic they always dreamed of. I still think the mirrors have the power to be used as fade portals. Since they ARE able to be tainted and spread the taint and the taint is something very physical.

It could be that Arlathan was always in the Fade, or existed partially in the Fade and in reality (my favorite theory, think Arcane Warriors).

Arlathan could've been entirely pushed into the Fade by Tevinter, corrupting it. And the elves entirely pushed out, making them mortal.
