No I am sorry to say, anyone who claims those games as "best rpgs ever" ARE kidding themselves.   Are they decent RECENT games? Sure, which leads to the only conclusion that these people have never played, or are too young to appreciate games that don't have l337 graphics.

Again your only going off your opinion and forgetting that other people are different. Personally other than FF7, I thought the rest were entire crap. I much prefer the games of today, not because of great graphics, but because there is so much more to them.

Ignoring some games like Dark Lands and Death Lord that were great in their time but so old that most people will never have heard of them, and with many ties:

1 BG series

1 Dragon Age

1 Fallout 1

4 TES Daggerfall

4 KotoR 1

4 Fall Out 2

4 Fall out 3

Then you sir, are completely irrational. :)

while 7 may be the best of the 3d world final fantasy games, it is quite the general consensus it is leagues behind 3/6 or even 4. <3 Kain

Hah, I must be getting old if people are claiming Final Fantasy 7 is old school.

Wait... I'm only early/mid 20s...

Besides, even if this meant anything you are still missing the point, I don't even like Final Fantasy games. Personal preference.

Ok, so no one mentioned the old Oregon Trail educational adventure game from the late 1970s/early 1980s. Oh well.

The best CRPGs for me and for which I still have working hardware are:

1. The Witcher

2. DA:O

3. TES4: Oblivion

4. Bard's Tale (the really snarky PS2 version that most fans of the older BT series hate)

5. Tie--Hellgate: London or Final Fantasy XII, though one is jRPG and the other is action with rpg overtones

I'd like to give a shout-out to bloodlines too. It was broken and incomplete but it came just off my top 5 and the introduction to the sometimes extremely silly WoD steered me towards the best pen and paper RPG group I've ever had.

Hmm....hard to pick just 5, esp. if one takes into account nostalgia. There were some really nice 'gold box' games and other old stuff, for example, but that could just be my memory (I'm pretty sure I've forgotten some stuff that I've enjoyed, too...).

1.) Fallout series (1 & 2...as 3 was disappointing) - I love post-apocalyptic settings. FO2 was funny, so I'll pick that if I had to pick just one.

2.) Arcanum - not the greatest game, but I enjoyed the setting. I wish there were more steampunk RPGs of this sort.

3.) Dragon Age: Origins - great characters, tho' I have some issues w/ some of the plot choices

4.) Knights of the Old Republic - I used to be a SW fan ('til I saw the 'prequel' trilogy, esp. Ep. 3...)

5.) Torn between Darklands ('sandbox'), The Witcher (great atmosphere) and Mass Effect (epic space opera w/ 'cinematic feel')...tho' if I had to pick, I'd go w/ The Witcher (the enhanced edition was great, esp. since the improvements were 'free')

I'd also throw in Baldur's Gate 2, Champions of Krynn (I was a DL fan...), Jagged Alliance 2 (is this an RPG? ) and Mount & Blade (esp. w/ some mods)...

quick top 5 of all time

1: TES 4 Oblivian

2: Quest for Glory II

3: Diablo 2

4: Everquest

5 Phantasy Star 4

not all are single player RPGs and some may consider QfG as a adventure game with RPG elements. (I think it's the other way around but that's just me)

Anyhow these are the games that I have had the most fun with so far. In 5 years passes and DA:O hangs around my play list, it may be there.

Small pedantic note but Icewind Dale was not made by the same people as Baldur's Gate even though it was an infinity engine game.
