1) The Ultima Series (in order: 7, 4, 5, 3, 2, 6. 1 and 8 excluded)

2) The Baldur's Gate Series (in order: 2, IWD, 1)

3) Dragon Age Origins

4) The Bard's Tale (in order: 1, 3, 2)

5) The Elder Scrolls Series (in order: 4, 3, 2)

Honorable mentions: Fallout Series (3,1,2), Phantasie (1,2,3), D&D Gold Box Series (1,2,3), Mass Effect, Wizardy (1,3,4,2), Diablo Series (2,1), Might & Magic Series (3,2,1), Thief Series (3,2,1), Planscape: Torment, Vampire: The Masquerade, Deus Ex, NWN (2,1), Jade Empire, Legend of Zelda (1), Divine Divinity.

* I didn't list what I didn't play ie-Chronotrigger, Final Fantasy, later Might and Magic, later Zelda, KotOR. . .

*MMOs I exclude as a different genre, UO out, DAoC out, WoW out, EQ out. . .

Small pedantic note but Icewind Dale was not made by the same people as Baldur's Gate even though it was an infinity engine game.

It was not a BG series either. It was just in the forgoten realms as well with the same DnD system.

1. DA:O
2.KOTOR (feeling generous with this since the d20 system was almost a game breaker for me)
3.Mass Effect
4.Final Fantasy 10
4. Silver (i guess most people wont know/remember this game)

FF8, NWN2  missed my top 5 narrowly (never played BG2)

In order of times replayed:

1) Baldur's Gate trilogy (ideally with one of the mods letting you use the BG2 engine in BG1 to play all the way through as your favorite kit)

2) System Shock 2

3) Morrowind (great art direction)

4) Planescape: Torment

5) Deus Ex

Lots of FPS/RPGs on the list, but these ones are brilliant. BG & PS:T go without saying, but System Shock 2 is genius - draws well from cyberpunk film and literature, strong story, great voice acting, fun to play and scary as hell.

Morrowind's in there for art direction alone. The game's decent, but the alien other-ness of the architecture, creatures and settings places it apart. Like PS:T it threw out the Tolkein rulebook on how to make an RPG about elves, dwarves and vaguely European dark-age settings and forged its own path.

Interesting but it does not look like anyone (I haven't read each and every post) has choosen World of Warcraft.  But I am sure the good guys at Blizzard (just down the road from me) don't really give a damn.  On last count in the last 90 days over 11,500,000 gamers are playing WoW.

Lets see... at $14.95 per month X 11.50MM... gee that is a whole big bunch of moola every month.  Probably enough to be able to buy Bioware if they wanted.  Now there is a thought.

In no particular order:

Final Fantasy 7

Texas Hold'em

Chrono Trigger

Fallout Series (1 and 3 are my faves)

Sometime during this deployment I plan on getting the old BG games, Icewind Dale, and maybe a few other reccomendations off this forum. For the time being, I'd have DA:O be in my top 5. It's truly addicting and has given me a lot of enjoyment to date.

We two have a lot in common. If you happen to be a woman have my babies but any woman liking System Shock 2 or Deus eX would be weird so you are not. Plus my wife wouldnt like this little afair too much either.

My favourite rpgs of all time

1) Baldurs Gate 2: shadows of amn by itself (not throne of bhaal included)

2) Fallout series - Epic customisation epic role playing options, epic death animations

3) Quest for Glory 2 - You felt like the hero of the land, and I like solving puzzles also

4) Ultima 7 - huge world, got involved in the numerous stories around the world, and you could bake bread

5) Diablo - the animation and feel of it at the time were truly awesome and ground breaking, promise of unique dungeons every time but did have the annoyance of walking all the time

Notable near misses: Kotor 1, Morrowind, Ultima 6, Betrayal at Krondor

Ehrm..  as far as I can tell, you can play a role all you want. Whether it be a technical role (tank/dps/heal etc) or just plain out roleplay your character in that universe with other people. I'm not particularly defending WoW but what you say is as much as a "bus is not a vehicle" O.o

Not really, a bus can never be a racing car. Bus is a general word as "game". WoW may have all you say but your character in the world is transparent. You do not exist for the world. Kill an epic monster and another one will spawn for some other "hero" to kill. You saved a small settlement from the big bad werewolf invasion, congrats, there are thousands other people doing the thing -at the same time- as you.

So no WoW is NOT  in RPG. EVE  online on the other hand IS  an RPG even if an MMO one like WoW.

You know what... you knot-heads can scream all you want about WoW not being an RPG.  But if you are serious it just shows your ignorance.

1) you select a race at start of new game
2) you select a class at start of new game
3) you pick out attributes and talents at start of new game
4) you level up throughout the game making you PC stronger.

What more elements of an RPG do you want?  And if it's not MMO-RPG then what is it?

Sheesh! Some People and their prejudice!

your talking technically and hes talking spiritualy. Technically wow (and most other mmo's) are rpg's but do not have the spirit of a proper rpg....after all, at end game everyone has the same gear with the same weapons and the same specs (ok not EVERYONE but those that dont soon will) ...roleplaying a sheep isnt really what a true rpg is all about :P

Really? Do you change the world in the same manner as you do in EVE (the world practically is the community itself)? When you kill Arthas is he dead forever and does it have server wide consequences or is he spawned again for another group of "heroes" to be defeated?

I agree with Tamerlane... some people believe if the developers do not follow the D&D rules and use only characters out of Forgotten Realms then it is not an RPG... in other words "It has to fall within what I say an RPG is"

WoW is different because the Blizzard folks made an RPG using their own rules not D&D... God bless em and more power to em.

I guess WoW has changed a lot since you last checked it out (if ever). In Wrath of the Lich King parts of the world permanently change based on quests you do. The change is permanent to you, it's called facet instancing. There's even a main story line (albeit not very deep) but there is one. Who cares it repeats itself for you or other players if you chose to do the same dungeon more than once. It's an RPG by all means. That you deny that is hard to believe - or your defining criteria for an RPG are so off that you forgot what the acronym actually stands for.

As for the topic on hand:

1) The Witcher
2) Dragon Age: Origins
3) Baldur's Gate 1
4) Summoner (story > quirks the game had)
5) Phantasy Star II (Sega Genesis)

When you killed Onyxia and handed in her head, the head would be displayed at the Stormwind Citygates for everyone to see. Due to it being multiplayer obviously permanent changes/influences are not possible but they are simulated. By your definitions anything that is massive multiplayer can not be an RPG. Eve doesn't differ one bit. In eve, things respawn as much as in WoW, I've played Eve as well to know what I'm talking about. But frankly, this is a discussion that merits its own thread ;)

But permanent changes are what makes an RPG. If we take away this facet we can call almost any game an RPG. Sims, Race Driver 2, Soul Calibur, Devil May Cry....its really not like that now is it.

1. Quest for Glory series.

2. BG Trilogy

3. Planescape: Torment

4. Betrayal at Krondor

5. Dragon Age: Origins (*)

* Pending game completion and further playthroughs, this may move up (or perhaps down).

Hmm... and there are a lot more games that could go in there. Still, I suppose that can be the list for today...

3) Dragonage:Origins

4) KotOR 1

5) Mass Effect

Based entirely on what I have enjoyed the most. KotOR2 could have been really good but wasnt finished. Left out games like Diablo as they are action games rather than RPGs. I think the only reason DA wasn't higher was because too many of the best bits were spoiled before the game was released.
