wow yall fail. No earthbound, no Chrono triggers, No FF3/6? Yeah this list is bogus.
Seriously people... MAss Effect, Fallout 3 over games like CT FF3/6, earthbound or any of the old greats? Are you kidding me?
No one fails, and no one is kidding you. Its about personal choice.
What could be a great game for you, could be a steaming pile of gaming crap for someone else.
I agree and i will give everyone wide latitude on their choices. However when i see someone post World of Warcraft on their list they get a big FAIL from me no question.
I have to go with :
Morrowind
KoTOR
Bards Tale
BG series
The Witcher

1 .Freedom Force
2. VTM: Bloodlines
3. Icewind Dale
4. Wasteland
5. Pools of Darkness
Dragon Age Origins will probably be somewhere in that list, but I need to play it another time or two before I can tell if it will beat Icewind Dale on up. It'll be hard for it to beat VTM and Freedom Force for me.
Wasteland, while not technologically superior, was a far more fun game to me than any Fallout (though I love all the Fallouts.)
And the SSI TSR Gold Box D&D games were classics that I had endless hours of fun making many, many parties for. Technical advances do shove Icewind Dale well above the older games, but they are close in equal levels of enjoyment.
VTM's writing and gameplay are so good that it manages to beat out most of my prefered game mechanics - most notably controlling a party vs. controlling a single person. VTM was the best blend of FPS, Adventure gaming and RPG that I've ever witnessed, it was crafted on a level of win that puts it right up there with Bladerunner for me.
DAO deserves in be in that list, and I'm positive it will be, but I've played it through once and it's too soon for me to judge how much I like it versus that "new game - awesome" feeling I get from even playing Hellboy or Mirror's Edge.
EDIT - and see, now had I read the thread I'd probably have FF3/6 in there, but I never owned the game (borrowed a friend's copy) and only played it once.
But that had an AWESOME story.
EDIT 2 - And now having read the thread, I want to toss out honorable mentions from me -
BG2, KotOR 1 & 2, Mass Effect, Bard's Tale series, Knights of Legend, FF3/6, Fallout 1 -3, all the Gold Box from SSI, Battletech Crescent Hawk games, Mars Saga, Alternate Reality series, Wizards Crown, Dark Sun (both), Shadowrun (SNES), VTM: Redemption (hey, I liked it!), X-Men Legends 1&2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Shenmue 2 (if the last 4 games listed count in this discussion as RPGs.)

Without further ado, my list:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 3
3. Knights of the Old Republic
4. Dragon Age: Origins
5. Mass Effect
The first two are my chosen representatives of the golden age of SNES RPGs. I guess it's cuz those are what I grew up with but those are still my gold standard RPGs - meaningful character advancement, tons of loot, engaging plot and characters and fun combat. I also greatly prefer that my game's scaling consist of fighting cooler monsters rather than stronger versions of the same boring ones.
The rest are all Bioware titles. I love Bioware RPGs in general - in my opinion, they strike the perfect balance of RPG depth and addictive playability. Unlike Bethesda they don't load the game down with useless items that sell for 1 gold and serve no purpose for 'immersion' or other crap like that; you get the oldschool RPG focus on gameplay with a pretty 3D world full of voice acted characters like you'd expect from a modern studio release. Everything I dislike about Bethesda style games is done the way I'd prefer in Bioware games. KOTOR still takes the cake in my opinion, as I literally had to force myself to stop at night and go to sleep when I was playing through the first time. Dragon Age beats out Mass Effect narrowly - I prefer ME's setting, although both are good, but I felt that the combat system in Mass Effect was hindered by the shooter aspect being too effective - I rarely bothered with any special abilities beyond gun abilities as it was rarely difficult to pew pew your way through each encounter, whereas DA fights feel like a tactical RPG (especially post-CC spell nerf, heh).
Edit: If I were to add an oldschool DnD game, Pool of Radiance, no question. I remember playing it on an oooooooold Mac (Mac classic-ish era probably?) as my first proper CRPG. I can't imagine wanting to replay it over any of the titles on my list, though, so it doesn't make the cut unless solely for nostalgia's sake.

No I am sorry to say, anyone who claims those games as "best rpgs ever" ARE kidding themselves. Are they decent RECENT games? Sure, which leads to the only conclusion that these people have never played, or are too young to appreciate games that don't have l337 graphics.
Again your only going off your opinion and forgetting that other people are different. Personally other than FF7, I thought the rest were entire crap. I much prefer the games of today, not because of great graphics, but because there is so much more to them.
BTW have you even try out Dragon age origins yet? I played Fallout 3 and it doesn't draw me in a bit. The game focus to much on running, to much talking and hardly any action (at the bomb shelter area) so i just uninstall it and feel in luv with Dragon age origin instead.

Solistus1 just for some info to you. Try and seperate Oblivion from the first 3 titles in that series bethesda did. Oblivion was like 10 steps backwards from Morrowind. I to absolutely hated Oblivion and most that did play it will tell you the same. Some did like it but even they will tell you they had to add a million mods to make it playable for them. Morrowind is a great title and i would highly reccomend it. you can't beat the price on it these days either.
That's weird. I've tried almost all of Bethesda's games (even Battlespire, though I missed Redguard by choice) and I could not get into Morrowind. I have it on PC and tried probably a half-dozen different times over the years.
Oblivion, however, I made it through the main storyline. Just barely, and only because all my previous experience with Bethesda games had taught me to put on blinders and just "following the storyline, don't get distracted, follow the storyline, don't get distracted" or else I'd get lost in the too large sand-boxyness of their games.
Personal taste, though, I guess. I still didn't list Oblivion in even honorable mentions, though I did enjoy it somewhat. Tons of RPGs I enjoyed but wouldn't give an honorable mention to.

Fallout 3
Planescape Torment
KOTOR 2: Sith Lords
Deus Ex (first one)
Fallout 3 and Dragon age replace Morrowind and BG2 respectively. I'm sorry but newer games despite what nostalgia you may have, DO tend to be much better in terms of immersion and depth.

NWN2 + MOTB
Fallout 2
Vampire: Bloodlines
Final Fantasy... 7 or 10
Diablo 1 would be on the list but I don't really consider it comparable as it's more of a multiplayer action game. Fallout 3 isn't much more than a retextured Oblivion (it's actually less I would say) and doesn't live up to the previous installments. Planescape: Torment has a good story but the gameplay is pretty terrible. Mass Effect barely qualifies as an RPG.. it's more like a shooter that replaces pickups with abilities.
