Prologue: Introductions
Firebase: Reactor
Location: Silean Nebula – Kypladon System - Cyone
Time: 010:00 Hours
Unit: N7 Special Forces Team Delta
Status: An accomplished unit comprised of a krogan Soldier named Urdnot Maul, a geth engineer unit named Platform - SOUL, an asari adept named Neera, and led by a female human infiltrator named Kate. After observing Reaper activity in the immediate area of Firebase: Reactor, Special Forces Team Delta touched down and made contact with Reaper ground forces. Delta Squad is the only available squad in the system at the time. Unfortunately, they were fired upon heavily as the elevator to the main reactor opened up. While they held off the Reapers long enough to take cover, they were ultimately pinned down. We lost track of them shortly after making contact.
“Everybody get down and take cover! Neera, you need to put up a barrier to protect us. SOUL set up a turret to give
us more firepower. Maul, how bad is it?” Kate is looking at the krogan, hunched over. Blood is pouring out of an open wound left by the initial attack of a Cannibal as he charged it to protect SOUL. The krogan gazes up at Kate and begins laughing. “I’m Urdnot! It’ll take a lot more than a stupid flesh wound to keep me down.” Kate shakes her head in disbelief. “Glad to hear it.” Kate then looks over towards Neera. “How are those barriers, Neera?” There is suppleness in her voice expressive of deep personal feelings for the beautiful asari. Neera looks at Kate. “It will not hold long. The Reapers keep pushing. We may not be able to remain in this area much longer.” Kate continues to look at Neera who already looks exhausted maintaining the barrier against such attacks. “I feel that it is time to move. The probability of survival here is rapidly decreasing.” SOUL finally says.
The geth made the squad nervous when he first joined. As time passed however, the squad quickly saw the potential he had. They even came to refer to him as “he” instead of “it”. SOUL, as he liked to refer himself as, liked the idea of being in a squad. He was finally alive; a true intelligence.
Kate looks at the geth. “Alright, SOUL, we will take your advice. Everybody, get ready and wait for my signal to
move.” As Kate cloaks and makes a break for a nearby fortification, the Reapers begin firing on the squad heavily. As she comes uncloaked, she calls over to Urdnot Maul. “Mark.” Immediately, Maul runs towards Kate’s position, gunning down several Husks along the way. Next to move is SOUL. The geth dodges in between cover and fire gracefully as he makes his way to the group. Finally, Neera lets her barrier down and starts for the group. Unfortunately, she let her barrier down too soon. A hail of fire comes down on her location as she breaks cover. As she goes back into cover, a bolt strikes her in her leg. Neera cries out in pain as she collapses to the ground.
Kate, noticing the incident calls to her squad to cover her. “Cover me! I need to get to Neera and get her out of there.” Maul laughs maliciously as he begins gunning Reapers down to cover Kate. “Hurry, Kate. We’re running low on spare ammo reserves.” The geth has a worried tone to his voice as he speaks. The krogan laughs even harder. “Who needs ammo?” The krogan put up a fortification and charges recklessly at the nearest Cannibal. “I am krogan!” The krogan struck the cannibal so hard that it sent the creature crashing into a nearby wall, killing it upon impact. “Hah. Weak.” The krogan says as he prepares for another charge. “Maul, come back! We’ve got Neera, retreat.” Kate yells as she sits Neera down gently and applies medi-gel on her wound.
Neera stared into Kate’s visor. Her hazel eyes were clearly visible while the helmet hid the rest of her face. “Thank you, ma’am. I’m sorry.” Neera says softly. Kate returned her stare. “Please, Neera, call me Kate.” Neera blushes at the show of compassion. “Alright. I will, Kate.” Neera says staring down at her wound. “The bleeding has stopped completely. I detect no irregularities at all.” SOUL says scanning Neera’s wound. “Thank you, SOUL.” Neera states standing up. Neera picks her Disciple up off of the ground and reloads it as more Reapers pour in to attack.
“I’m detecting multiple hostiles. They seem to have brought multiple indoctrination boosters with them. I advise haste in shutting them down. Organics minds are vulnerable to the effects of Reaper indoctrination.” SOUL warns as he does a thorough scan of the room and readies his plasma SMG. “Goddess, will this nightmare ever end?” Neera asks. “I hope not. More for me.” Maul rebukes. “Easy, Maul, we need to deal with those boosters first. I’ll find a place to set up and kill the Reapers from afar. Neera, I need you to accompany SOUL so that he can disable those boosters. Maul, I need you watching my flank.” SOUL stares at Kate, his optical moving ever so slightly. “This plan is sufficient in dealing with the boosters and enemy presence simultaneously. Neera and I will begin preparations. Alert. Multiple hostiles are gathering outside our local perimeter.”
“Thanks, SOUL. Alright, then, let’s get to it. Everybody move out.” Kate orders as her squad finishes preparing themselves for a tough fight. They know the Reapers would defend those boosters heavily. Kate and Maul draw off enemy fire while Neera and SOUL sneak through their flank, virtually undetected. “I have located the first booster.” SOUL leads Neera right to the booster to shut it down while Kate snipes anything that gets too close. Maul covers for Kate as she takes down more and more husks and cannibals.
Suddenly, one of the husks hovers in the air and is enveloped in a deep red mesh, covering it like armor. “Kate, keep an eye out for marauders.” Neera warns. “They’re already in sight, Neera. Focus on those boosters; we’ll handle any forces that get too close. Maul, I need you to switch your spike thrower out for your striker. We’ll need long range ballistics.” Maul nods towards Kate and obliged in pulling out his newly acquired krogan ballistics weapon. “Time to do some heavy damage. Heh, heh.” Maul says, laughing maliciously again. The krogan wastes no time in going straight to work as a bombardment of grenades comes raining down on the Reaper forces near Neera and SOUL.
Kate orders Maul to give it all he’s got unaware of a husk sneaking up on her. When she finally hears its approach, it is already too late to stop it from pouncing her. As she struggles to remover the husk, it begins to dig into her sides with its clawed hands making it even more difficult to remove. As Kate screams out in pain, Maul finally strikes down the last Marauder, oblivious to the husk’s surprise attack on Kate.
Angrily, he moves towards the struggle and firmly grabs hold of the husk. However, the husk ignores the krogan and continues to tear at Kate. “Get off of her you weakling!” He screams as he tears the husk off of Kate and slams it to the ground. As it tries to recover, Maul stamps his foot on the creature’s head, smashing it and instantly killing the husk.Kate staggers to recover from the ordeal and orders a regroup with Neera and SOUL.
It isn’t long until all the devices are shut down, giving the team a chance to regroup and catch their breath. “The enemy seems to have retreated for now.” Neera says panting, exhausted. “They’ll be back.” Maul retorts confidently. SOUL looked over at Kate. “Kate, I detect a loss of blood, are you wounded?” The geth asks. “Neera, I’m going to need medi-gel.” Kate says rapidly. Neera immediately goes to work in healing Kate while Maul and SOUL keep an eye out for movement. “This is the perfect habitation for an ambush. Remain vigilant.” SOUL warns, looking at Maul. Kate looks towards the platform. “Understood, SOUL; thank you.” She replies as Neera finishes applying the medi-gel.
