Dark energy was at best a minor intrigue in ME2, not some all important theme. Plus there are several things wrong with this story idea in the first place: why allow the mass relays to exist at all, because they basically propelled the use of Mass effect technology among the various civilizations; how do the build up of Mass effect fields destabilize a star (Haestrom) on the back end of the galaxy (that is not how field forces work); how is giving us only two choices instead of the three we got better in any way, especially since both options end in the Mass Effect universe in some way, one a quick and uncertain demise, while the other is a victory but the galaxy eventually gets destroyed. This wasn't planned from the beginning (it wasn't even in the original leaked script), it was Drew Karpyshan's original idea of what the Reaper's motives were earlier on and he didn't even work on ME3.

Something about the processing power of a quantum computer structured out of human chromosomes, maybe? Still, it was a better plot than the singularity. Rannoch's codex entry rather convincingly shows that the Geth aren't going to try to wipe out organics. EDI's in love with one. Why are they bad? Oh, right. Because Casey said so. You can't disregard logic like that in a sci-fi narrative.

I'd have honestly liked the reapers motivations to stay illusive even at the conclusion of Mass Effect 3. The first conversation you have with soveriegn led you to believe that they were so far beyond us, and that we couldn't possibly understand their purpose. In flies starkid and tells us his circular argument for why they exist. Defeating the reapers despite not knowing why they reaped would have been a good type of 'speculation for everyone' if you ask me.

I agree. Compare the first conversation with Sovereign to the Star-child conversation, and the emotional impact of each scene:  creepy to laughable.

While there are still major problems with the dark energy ending, it would certainly be a better fit with Sovereign's claim that the Reapers existence is beyond our comprehension. The existence of a race of sentient starships, whose purpose is to think, is something organics can probably not grasp their minds around. Kind of like trying to to achieve a understanding of infinity or how the universe originated.

I hate to admit it, but I really never liked the Dark Energy ending much more than the current one. Sure it is mentioned a bit, but not enough to be series finale material, it was at best a mission arc to harness such energy into a weapon or something.

Personally, I'm fine with the reapers simply wanting to forcefully ascend us to a higher plain of existence, just leave out the Organic vs. Synthetic garbage that was contradicted in the very same game. Such a motivation would at least stay true to the theme of self-determination that is finale material. Better yet, keep the reapers a mystery. Through a few hints at us but don't spell it out. This would not only lead to good speculation but set up the possibility of sequels or other Mass Effect adventures.

The Reapers were particularly interested in humanity because they wait until a race has grown to the apex of its potential before wiping it out. There's not a great deal of mystery there in my opinion. My buddy told me this rumour and it almost wrecked the end of ME3 (simply because I thought it had some really interesting ideas that could have been developed further and made into a potentially 'better' ending) - but having read this, and coming to my own conclusions, the Mass Effect trilogy is complete and awesome in its own right. Each game is great I think, no need for so much speculation. Unless you intend to write a fan fiction based in the universe I guess :)
