Whether male or female the default lead protagonist always been portrayed as white  in Bioware's games. To my knowledge this is all we've ever seen represented when it comes to advertisements and promotional trailers as well as the in game default characters.  Do you think this will ever change or that it even should? Personally I'd like for Bioware to decide one of these days to have their default lead protagonists portrayed as something other than white male/white female. It's not a huge deal to me or anything but  It's just one of those things you can't help but notice over the years. I don't expect this to be a very popular thread  topic but hopefully it will be handled maturely. Thoughts?

They're Canadian. They work with what they know best, e.g. white people over Hispanic, Asian, or African people. I see no problem.

They can and have. Jade Empire.

Regardless, I agree that diversity is a worthy goal.

With the exception of the Mass Effect series (all the same character) and Dragon Age 2, what other series have had default main characters? TOR, DA:O, KOTOR, and Baldur's Gate didn't have default characters if I remember correctly. Jade Empire had all non-white protagonists.

I'm not sure I see the trend you are suggesting exists here.

If I'm mistaken let me know.

EDIT: I also forgot about Neverwinter as pointed out in a previous post.  Also, did we ever see the protagonist's face in MDK2?  If not, his suit was black at least.  ;)   Oh and Sonic the Hedgehog is also non-white.

That is why they have the character creator though. despite the promotional default ones they use. You can make your character your own... In all honesty, I don't think it matters one way or the other.

Japanese games tend to use Japanese characters for the most part.
NA/EU games tend to use White characters for the most part.

Im sure that when Africa starts to release its own games that the protagonist will be black.

I don't think it's a racist thing, I think they choose whatever face goes best with the voice acting.

I'm guessing many people haven't played it.  Bioware was a relatively new console developer at the time.  Most XBOX owners probably only gave KOTOR a chance because of the Star Wars licence.

You appeal to the majority with your box art, but given how customizable the characters are, I'm not sure it's such an issue. Tokenism is a bad thing.

Besides, there was Jade Empire.

Wait a second...

Why would a non-white character not appeal to whites?

I don't think they've even gotten a handle on genders so....

Here's to progress *ching ching*

ETA: Yes, there's customization which is awesome. However, what is marketed are the defaults.

This is pathetic. Whatever difference does it make what color the protagonist is? And especially when you can change it to whatever you want?

This is really pathetic. You can change your character to w/e you want. And, who gives a sh** of what color your character has?

it doesn't matter, 1 of the things that but initially attracted me to this game was the fact that " you"could change your heroes appearance, sex, etc. quite frankly I think it's BW strength from the gate, giving the player that type of antonomy, I feel as though they really delivered, hats off to BW, this is a non issue "IMO"

Seeing as how the ME series has character creation for the main protagonist where you can choose race and gender, I'm not sure of what's the OP's issue.

If it's about the default manshep, heres the thing.

If the default Shepard is an asian women, someone would have an issue of it not being something else.

My point is they had to go with something and that was what they chose.

Sure ... because if you're making a point about how all the characters in a series of games are white, you can't be white yourself.

Not even sure why I'm having a go at you, I'm pretty much in agreement that it doesn't matter what colour they are ... but it was such a bad point it had to be said.

Diversity for the sake of diversity is kind of stupid.
