Diversity for the sake of diversity is kind of stupid.

Tell that to my government.

Will it ever matter?

(no.)

Also, what Rombomm said. Except, replace "stupid" with "destructive."

If the idea of a white male lead in Mass Effect bothers you so much.... don't... use.... Sheploo. That's what the character creator is for.

DA:O had a white male as the marketed warden for the Sacred Ashes Trailer, DA2 had Hawke and ME has Shep. Other than those...Jade Empire had all Asian PCs and their other games haven't had a default PC. So, at best you could claim this a new trend in Bioware games, but even that is stretching it.

It's more like Bio games are marketed differently than they used to be. They didn't have white protagonists in trailers before DA:O and ME because they didn't do cinematic trailers.

Though BG arguably did have a canon Bhaalspawn --- assuming you haven't blocked the novelizations out of your mind.

Does it matter in the case of ME? No, because the default Shepard is mostly a placeholder for most players since they use custom characters.

It's not a huge deal to me or anything

It was a big enough deal for you to make a thread about it.

I don't think its an issue at all. Anybody that knows anything about Bioware's games knows that they allow the player to customise their character in many ways, including skin colour. The implication that Bioware is in some way racist is just ridiculous.

but bioware already has a non-caucasion lead character...what happened to jade empire? Im pretty sure the characters are predominately asian. Granted I havent played it myself but something tells me Im not too far off.

Don't read into it too much. Being overly sensitive about 'OMG HE'S WHITE RACIST!!11' leads to issues that should be long forgotten.

Default Shepard is white, so what? Doesn't mean anything, he just is. You can change him into a black/asian/hispanic whatever!

My first Revan was black and bold lol, it was the best default preset in KOTOR :-)

Every character in Jade Empire is asian. Well okay, guess those are pretty white, too, aren't they? Okay, let's see...in Knights of the Old Republic you could choose your jedi to be black, hispanic or asian, too. It's not a "default" character, but at least something.

And the most political correct Bioware game is, of course, Dragon Age Origins. You can even be an elf or dwarv and you gotta admit those are pretty much THE SMALLEST minority on our planet, so much that they actually don't exist. xD

They can and have. Jade Empire.

Regardless, I agree that diversity is a worthy goal.

But all the protagonists were. I think that was the point people were making.

Have you never seen how you can customise Shepard in all Mass Effect Games? It is a matter of choice what skin colour you choose to be in the game so technically you have the choice to play as a different race if you want to.

ME3 had kind of a pasty pink default lead, does that count?

As long as options still exist to alter said default character in my own playthroughs I do not really care how Bioware advertises them to be all that much.

Quite frankly this is about as curious as asking if a Bollywood film will ever have a lead actress who is Chinese.

I await the day that a good, honest, openly synthetic character plays the lead role in one of these games. Nameless synthetic "bad guys" have been a staple from the earliest days of video games; the always logical and faithful synthetic sidekick is a cliche; but when will a synthetic take center stage???

What difference does it make when you can create your own character?

Also, Jade Empire.

I like it. Bioware can use a great black VA as well for that character.

No offense, but this thread is a joke. It is nothing more than a prod at assuming racism is behind it. As if we don't already have enough issues in the world with ppl trying to say that almost everything someone else does is racially motivated. Diversity and multi-racial acceptance will always be an unreachable goal as long as we have douches trying to paint things in this kind of light.

I do not agree that Bioware should create a main character to be hispanic etc just because people think they are racist if they do not.

It is stuff like this that annoys me the most in todays society people trying to provoke some form of reaction from the public on racism accusations, even though Bioware from what I can tell have not been racist.

In fact in some ways they have been showing what its like in the past. For Dragon Age 2 does run the lines of history of racism etc with the Mages and Elves being marginalised or put in prison for life (sometimes death) and considered criminals even though they were born with the gift.

This is really pathetic. You can change your character to w/e you want. And, who gives a sh** of what color your character has?

well to be fair though i wouldnt mind being able to change the voice

instead of just meer ( who i love btw) but give us the option of additional voices to selct for our shepards
