Why would a non-white character not appeal to whites?

Because white people prefer white characters.

Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter(mostly non j-characters),Metal Gear Solid, Binary Domain, Vanquish, Silent Hill, old school games like Virtua Cop, House of the Dead, Dino Crisis.

That's off the top of my head. Non Japanese characters.

They can and have. Jade Empire.

Regardless, I agree that diversity is a worthy goal.

Yeah i figured people would mention Jade Empire but it's not exactly the same because you don't really have a choice. You are just given several different defaults to choose from. It is significant though that they would create an entire game based largely on what i'm assuming was ancient chinese mythology.

Depends on what context the game is in. Just chucking in a black guy for the hell of it would be laughably pointless. If the game is based among African tribes, then obviously they wouldn't have some white Englishman as the default.

Whether male or female the default lead protagonist always been portrayed as white  in Bioware's games. To my knowledge this is all we've ever seen represented when it comes to advertisements and promotional trailers as well as the in game default characters.  Do you think this will ever change or that it even should? Personally I'd like for Bioware to decide one of these days to have their default lead protagonists portrayed as something other than white male/white female. It's not a huge deal to me or anything but  It's just one of those things you can't help but notice over the years. I don't expect this to be a very popular thread  topic but hopefully it will be handled maturely. Thoughts?

I don't think it's a racist thing, I think they choose whatever face goes best with the voice acting.

That's a slippery slope, but I do recall that Ash's VA in ME was black.  Confirmation anyone?

Out of all the companies that you could complain about, you pick the one that allows for customizable main characters??

No they're not. Some characters (the old FF games, Metal Gear) are explicitly white (and Anerican, if so), but the vast majority, including the animé characters, are supposed to be Japanese, even ambiguously.

EDIT: If you noticed what you listed, they have several things in common:

A) The characters are explicitly American or (implied) European (though that shouldn't necessarily make them white)

and

B) They were created for international consumption. Those games aren't popular in the domestic market.

I am not saying you won't tend to play with what you're familiar with.   All my Sheps are black.  My issue is that when the OP says "why isn't there a non white lead character?", the response is "well you can change Shep to whatever you want", but when it is flipped, the answer is "it's what the "majority" appeals to".  Well if you can change your Shep anyway, why does it matter in one case and not the other?

I sense hypocrisy in the room....

"Black peeps" don't often get a chance to play black characters (especially ones that aren't stereotyped bullsh*ts), so their preference is really irrelevant.

Why doesn't Bioware ever have Irish leads in their games?

It's less stupid than "let's have a white bald guy as the poster hero again, like 89123470374 other games!".

I agree with that statement. Because forced diversity leads to things like Jar Jar Binks, then no one's happy.

But at far as the developers, they are mostly white, and are probably not around many other ethnicities in their enviornment, so that diverse influence isn't there. It's not the fact of diversifing the characters themselves, but diversifing the work enviornment with qualified professionals of all enthnicities. Therefore, the influence of different cultures and races will be more prevelant and then lead to....diverse characters.

Seriously. When you can have so many skin colors, eye shapes, hairstyles to chose from to design your pratagonist and make him/her look unique and stand out from the rest, why would you go for a bald marine white guy look again? I bet it's just dictated by marketing teams "because white bald marine appeals the best to dudebros yay!"...

Resident evil, FF and MGS aren't popular in Japan?!?!
