I agree with that statement. Because forced diversity leads to things like Jar Jar Binks, then no one's happy.
But at far as the developers, they are mostly white, and are probably not around many other ethnicities in their enviornment, so that diverse influence isn't there. It's not the fact of diversifing the characters themselves, but diversifing the work enviornment with qualified professionals of all enthnicities. Therefore, the influence of different cultures and races will be more prevelant and then lead to....diverse characters.
LOL @ the idea of Jar Jar Binks being representative of anything or anyone....

Get rid of "default" characters altogether, I say. Pick from a selection of defaults, rather than a single one. Problem solved. For marketing, make this feature a SELLING POINT. I have never seen any BioWare advertising that demonstrated the character customization, and it was a huge draw for me. When you need to show cutscenes featuring the player character, make multiple versions and put them all in rotation.

Seriously. When you can have so many skin colors, eye shapes, hairstyles to chose from to design your pratagonist and make him/her look unique and stand out from the rest, why would you go for a bald marine white guy look again? I bet it's just dictated by marketing teams "because white bald marine appeals the best to dudebros yay!"...Random Jerkface wrote...

What about ME3's marketing?
Female Shepard has become just as much the face of Mass Effect as the "white bald marine" now.

Not if they not to put someone on it. They could have just put an N7 or a Reaper or something on it.
Would this be a good idea? Maybe, maybe not.

Wait, what?
Diversity (a good thing) for the sake of diversity (again, a good thing) is "kind of stupid"? Something tells me you're male, and white.
Here's the thing that a lot of people who benefit from male privilege or ethnic privilege don't understand: other people aren't male, or the majority ethnicity. Those people might want to see a reflection of themselves in advertising for a game. Those people might want to feel included in the conversation. Sorry if that means you might see some non-white, non-male representations of a player character every now and then. It must be hard not seeing your own gender and ethnicity, since it's what you're used to. But, silver lining, you can use that as a tool to cultivate empathy for people who've been dealing with that this whole time. So why don't you do that.

Why?
I don't see why a representation of the player character has to be front and center on the box art. Personally I like a cleaner look to box art, without overblown illustrations that depict some movie-poster idea of what the game is about. No one is going to buy a game solely because of the box illustration.

And "forced diversity" is a bit of a nonstarter, don't you agree? You either have it, or you don't. If designing your protagonist to be X is "forcing diversity," then so is designing any other character that way.
Jar Jar Binks is not what you have when you have a "diverse" cast. Jar Jar Binks is what happens when you have a stupid character, then generously apply stereotypes and a ridiculous (and poorly done) accent. An interesting character is going to be interesting regardless of his or her sex, race, or ethnicity. Good writing is good writing.

As black man I say it's not a good thing to force it. The problem with forcing diversity is that the character may becaome a stereotype with ease. It's better to focus on good characters then on the ethnicity of the character...And besides, Shepard is a player created character....We can make him any race we want.Siansonea II wrote...

Only if the writer is an idiot and/or is literally incapable of creating characters without resorting to racial stereotypes. The problem with forcing diversity is that the character may becaome a stereotype with ease.
I mean, honestly. So you sit down to write a character. He has a big family, tends to sometimes be aggressively competitive, and acts rashly on occasion. You also decide to make him black.
So because he's black, should you make him have five baby mommas with three children each, a drug dealer who's constantly fighting for more turf, and a person who tends to pull a gat and shoot people without thinking? I don't think so. No one is that incompetent.
If you can write a good character, you can write a good character--regardless of what he or she looks like.

We have the alien races who are there ethicities.
We have Anderson , Jacob, Traynor, James, Steve...I'm not sure what race Adams is but he looks Asian. We have Ashley who is super intemix and who is voiced by a black woman....

I say ME is pretty intermixed. Added we can make Shepard any race we want...
