Well, the fact is that no African American character has ever been written well. Jacob is no different. As African American we are not ment to be the hero or even the side kick to the hero. The obvious and most likely blatent use of sterotypes in his "romance" are appaling. He cheats on gem shroud after six monthes, really bioware do you even think about how black people are going to look at that or are we just another missing demographic to you? However, you react to this post the sad fact of it is true. African Americans are not ever going to be portrayed as the hero( or villian for that matter) a casual glance at every aspect of American entertainment can verify that. Not marvel,dc,Idw,darkhorse or any other comic has a viable agri an American character. No video game to date has been created with a real black hero as the lead. It is obvious that people want to be saved from black people not by black people and bioware has gone right along and contributed to that frame of thought.

I never romanced him - but if you do he's a complete and utter a-hole. Oh and also his ridiculous attitude to seemingly everyone you seem to recruit. He deliberately incites Tali, is xenophobic towards Legion and Grunt (understandable with Legion I guess) and the worst part - he hates Thane because Thane is a mercenary, then Jacob becomes a mercenary in ME3. What a hypocrit.

He never changes during or between the games. He just remains the same old Jacob but this time he's had an extra-marital child.

His character is ok in some parts but most of the time he's undeveloped with a (weirdly) stereotypical background and simply an annoying person.

There's probably more cause to dislike him than other characters.

I disagree with you. Beiing a trekkie myself, have you ever watch Star Trek AT ALL?? Ever heard of DS9? or captain sisko?  there are plenty of other examples.....as well as  several movie stars an the president of the country     btw Im not black,

Actually, he's a pretty sh*te biotic, especially compared to Kaidan. And Jack is a better pullbot than he is.

...Really, all his abilities are pretty redundant.

I'm 99% sure he misspoke there. It was an idiot move, but I don't think it was malicious.

if I remember correctly Tali was insulting Cerburus, so he hit back 

Jacob is my favorite in Mass Effect 2 along with Miranda.

I don't hate him, I just think he is boring. For some reason I find every squadmate boring who is with you in the first real mission of the game, In ME1 I did not care for Ashley and Kaidan, in ME2 for Jacob and Miranda and in ME3 for James and Ashley/Kaidan. I don't know why, probably because they are humans, aliens squadmates are the best (exept Jack).
Jacob in particular is just so "normal" if you can say that about someone who is surrounded by the galaxy all star team. There is nothing in his story I really want to explore, he is just another soldier and that spot is filled by Shepard. He may have done some really outstanding things but they are dwarfed by the things characters Mordin, Thane or Garrus have done.

When a biotic considers pull to be the "good stuff" of his arsenal, he's a weak biotic.

In all seriousness though, people went from ME1, where allied biotics (mainly kaiden and liara) had full long lists of biotic powers that tore enemies apart in a variety of ways, to ME2 where biotics (the first of being jacob) limited in their power set.

It also doesn't help that because almost half the team is biotics, jacob is shown to be rather.... Under-qualified? Considering biotics seems to be his only hat-trick and most of the other biotics (aside from thane) get to show off their powers in flashy ways....

Yeah Jacob just has the unfortunate pleasure of being the one normal guy among many interesting, and powerful characters. That doesn't endear him much considering the nature of the series and its sci-fi setting.

Wow, I cannot believe that someone actually referenced ds9 while I enjoy star trek if you remember he want not even a captain when the show started. The only black commander had to wait until the next to last season to get promoted to captain. Honestly the president comment does not warrent a comment as it has no place in this discussion.

For me, from me 1 on I always thought, and hoped there should/would be a good balance between human and alien characters, bc right from the get-go there are alot of aliens....but i do think theyt succeded there

I mean his father abadons him and his mother to create a space harem. BoosTed was already neck deep in dangerous water with that sterotype.

liked jacob too, never used him much but for me he was that nice guy with morals who get the job done. and then i heard he cheated on femshep. absolutely loved it. but whataya can, people fall in love.
i dont view that as cheating much, honestly.

he was promoted in the last episode of the 3rd season.....it was probably bc he hadnt stayed on the career course, he was a broken man whod lost his wife, didnt want to be there,etc,etc...but we know that all changes...


plus ds9 as a whole was just so different in all the star trek lineage

Babylon5 was written Mich better that any star two show not called the next generation. However,Babylon5 also endeavored to portray black people as less than capable of being the hero. The back doctor on B5 became a junkie. Awsome. Tell me I'm wrong

i agree he was kind of a successor to kaian......i diagree that he was not a successful/better one...kaidan was ok, but being an ashley guy i have one career in 10 with him alive,so.....
if i could keep only 5 characters of all my squads alive theyd be: ashley,miranda,mordin,liara,grunt
