can i ask what you didnt like about it ?

ok....it felt extremely lonely and empty{as it would with any li that wasnt actually on your ship with you}..theres no real climatic love/sex scene.....we dont see nearly enough of her li or not IMO and many ppls, and finally our final goodbye was via holocommuniaction for like a minute with nothing really being sai or expressed.....that cover it?  in the end, i was left humbly just appreciating i got anything....and just happy i got my ashley back fully

Hes a bro to my shep. I wish him luck with his family and know he will kick ass where ever he ends up as a certified former squaddy.

Well, the fact is that no African American character has ever been written well. Jacob is no different. As African American we are not ment to be the hero or even the side kick to the hero. The obvious and most likely blatent use of sterotypes in his "romance" are appaling. He cheats on gem shroud after six monthes, really bioware do you even think about how black people are going to look at that or are we just another missing demographic to you? However, you react to this post the sad fact of it is true. African Americans are not ever going to be portrayed as the hero( or villian for that matter) a casual glance at every aspect of American entertainment can verify that. Not marvel,dc,Idw,darkhorse or any other comic has a viable agri an American character. No video game to date has been created with a real black hero as the lead. It is obvious that people want to be saved from black people not by black people and bioware has gone right along and contributed to that frame of thought.

Sad, but true. Only game I can think of with a fleshed out black cast was GTA: San Andreas...

I like Jacob but I think most people just want to know more about him and hate that he is a token black guy of sorts. Dead beat dad thing. I like Jacob and I am glad they actually had a good black guy in the game (I am a black guy and I rarely see good black characters in games or movies especially not in a leadership type role like Jacob) I was actually kind of upset that he didn't join us in ME 3. I was looking forward to having him team up with Ashley. Then again I was looking forward to have the choice of who I wanted to take a long and who I did not. That would have made ME 3 a much better experience for me.

I dunno, I definitely dont hate him, there arent any characters I hate its silly to hate a fictional person, what I will say is that I found his character to be beyond boring, all through ME2 it felt like there was no growth whatsoever. Compared to someone like Miranda who was cold and standoff-ish turning into someone that deeply trusted shepard. Also As my cannon shep is a vanguard Jacob was completely useless to me, My squad was always Me Miranda and some third, usually garrus.

exactly about the black hero. I think it also comes with trying to politically correct to everyone as possible. We are used to seeing white heros. I remember being a kid asking my mom why there were no good black super heros. And yes Jacob has a lot of negative stereotypes attached to his character. On another note most of the newer Marvel stuff has Nick Fury as a black man taking after Samuel Jackon after he was in a few of the Marvel character movies. But Nick Fury is a jack ass

idk if its silly to truly dislike a character in a game or not. I truly disliked Kaiden in ME 1 and I really like Ashley. I really liked everyone they added in ME 2 my favorite being Jack. I wish I could have learned more about Kasumi. She is probably the most intersting character in ME 2 to me.

Fair enough I guess I should clarify, I feel hate is a very strong emotion to feel for a fictional character, there are characters I dislike more than others (even that is more directed at the writers for takking them in the direction they did).

Although I'm aware there are still too many racist behaviours/issues in the entertainment industry (it gets far worse in the real world) what you said is not entirely true. There are movies where the hero is an afro-american person like Hancóck (in fact, he's the superhero) or I'm Legend (yeah.. Will Smith again). Videogames? Well, I don't recall any black protagonist right now but I'm sure those said issues are not a problem anymore, they shouldn't at least. There are plenty of great black characters like Gabriel Tosh from Starcraft, ThreeDog from Fallout3 or Alyx Vance from Half-Life, who is almost its protagonist.

I don't think players see all afro-american as cheaters just because Jacob cheats Shepard. Yes, Jacob is an insultingly stereotyped guy and Bioware should be ashamed, but fortunately most players can see that. People don't hate Jacob because he's black, people hate him because he's boring as hell. By the way, James Vega is another stereotyped guy and I don't see many hate threads around here. I'm from Spain and even though Spain is definitely NOT a latin-american society (every movie, comic or game mistakes Spain for Mexico or random South American country) I have almost the same reaction as you when I see him. Loco? Lola? He doesn't even speak Spanish properly! But I'm sure people are aware of that... I hope so xD

Sad, but true. Only game I can think of with a fleshed out black cast was GTA: San Andreas...

Another game with a nice black character, with all its wackiness, is Pierce from Saints Row 2 and Saints Row the Third. He's gangsta, but he inverts and subverts the typical "black male gangsta" trope so much.

For instance, he's not  afraid to get dirty with the boss and their crazy plans, but he obviously handles the logistics and brainy parts of the gang. He's also the one coming up with plans, even if the boss follows them or not.  In the third game he's trying to finish a chess game with Oleg, another brutish type character that subverts his trope. Ironically, Pierce's character does get some hate (in Saints Row 2 especially) like he isn't gangsta enough.

Coming back to Jacob, I really wanted to like him. I liked him in the very beggining of the game. But because I mainly femShep, the forced flirtatious tone made me not talk to him, and that wasn't fair to his character. It was something beyond the player's control and Jacob's control because the writer's went in that direction with him and no one else.

Then we get ME3 and his character gets blown apart. As a black woman I'm appalled no writer even thought of how Jacob cheating on Shep and getting another woman pregnat would look like to people. It's borderline stereotypical at best. Where there no other POC writers they could have run that by? Just to see if it might be offensive?

Jacob was a character that needed few tweeks and he could have been fine. He didn't deserve to written that way. And there is no reason to blow up a romance like that, especially if maleShep didn't get cheated on.

A strong emotional response from an immersive story is only a testamant to character quality or lack of.

While waiting for the game I used to fantasize about what they would do with Jacob. Thinking that they would make him greater than ever. Finally let go of that horrible voice they let FemShep have when she flirts with Jacob. Maybe he would team up with his old gang from the Corsairs and aid Shepard that way. He was my fav LI in ME2. Loved him to bits. And... then it was shot to bits in ME3. He is acting so strange from how I remembered him in ME2, thought he was the sure thing. That he would be the stable point for my FemShep, because he felt like such a great sincere guy. Now, I don't recognize him anymore, FemShep sounds like horny teenager, worse than ever when she tries to flirt him up. It was just horrible. And that guy who was so sweet to her in ME2, tells her that his new girl wants to name their baby after FemShep.

As much as I enjoy the game, currently playing my 3:rd FemShep and hitting Tuchanka next, Jacob and just how wrong the whole thing feels is my biggest heartbreak. It doesn't feel really like Jacob to do it. My FemShep is acting very strange. It... doesn't feel right. Cheating was a surprise, and surprising things should happen in the game. But they didn't handle it right.

Agree that it is really irritating that BroShep has all his romances and FemShep has one cheater and one guy who dies straight away. It feels a bit off.

I don't care for Zaeed either. I think the difference isn't in the amount of dialogue, rather the portrayal. Jacob seems to put a lot of effort into being likeable/neutral, where as Zaeed just stands there effectively  saying "acknowledge the way i think of myself as a badass".

well then theres Jack a lot of people dislike Jack and she is the same way as you describe Zaeed. Imo Jack is the biggest bad ass of the entire cast of ME including Shepard. But a lot of people dislike her. I love Jack though I oddly enough never romanced her.

Jack as a character develops into something new, where as Zaeed and Jacob stagnate. Your first impressions of Zaeed and Jacob are pretty much them forever.

Also Jacks new Chop and clothes, if i wasnt interested before - i am now.
