Well, the fact is that no African American character has ever been written well. Jacob is no different. As African American we are not ment to be the hero or even the side kick to the hero. The obvious and most likely blatent use of sterotypes in his "romance" are appaling. He cheats on gem shroud after six monthes, really bioware do you even think about how black people are going to look at that or are we just another missing demographic to you? However, you react to this post the sad fact of it is true. African Americans are not ever going to be portrayed as the hero( or villian for that matter) a casual glance at every aspect of American entertainment can verify that. Not marvel,dc,Idw,darkhorse or any other comic has a viable agri an American character. No video game to date has been created with a real black hero as the lead. It is obvious that people want to be saved from black people not by black people and bioware has gone right along and contributed to that frame of thought.
Actually you can have an African/African American, Latin, Asian etc. hero in ME. You just customize your Shepard as being African, Asian an whatnot. And before you start to talk about canon Shepard is meant to be white, then I should mention that Shepard isn´t meant to be a woman either, but that hasn´t kept people from playing as femshep.
BTW: I see you mention comic books never having an African American as the hero/main character, well, what do you call Blade then??

Sad, but true. Only game I can think of with a fleshed out black cast was GTA: San Andreas...
... A cast which consisted mainly of gangbangers. Stereotypes, anyone??

As soon as I met him in the Prolouge, I was an Adept. I was like,
"A gunman/biotic? Sorry, thats only me"
My type of play style did not call for him either. I was a mean SoB who ran up and made him pull people I was bashing, I kept distance. All I did was bound with biotics with my squad of Grunt, Jack, or Legion. They complimented my play style way better than Jacob.
He also had a somewhat awkward first impression. Would have loved to see him in a different situation where TIM just made you have a meeting with him from a dossier or something like Kasumi or Zaeed. Kasumi and Zaeed had excellent first impressions.
Sorry, just my thought process of it.

You bring up a great point about playing styles that I agree with. I think it is very important to understand how you want to play the game and pick your squad accordingly. Example I also did not find Jacob useful when playing as an Adept but when playing as a Solider I really liked having him around. The same way as when I was an engineer I didn't have much use for Tali or Legion unless I wanted to have 3 combat drones flying around taking care of stuff rather than bringing heavy hitters like Jack, Thane or Grunt.Deltakarma wrote...

In all seriousness though the man is a bleh character, in ME2 he just felt like a corporate brown-noser, had nothing interesting to say, out of all the biotics he was the weakest link, would have preferred to recruit his dad to be honest. Also forcing poor femshep to act flirty to him each time we have to talk to him, ugh seriously not cool and if by some miracle he avoids his appointment with mr. missile he is even more irritating in ME3.

Race, color, gender, sexual preference, and creed are all irrelevant to every discussion. They serve no purpose other than to divide a group of people, they have no significance to the topic at hand in every instance, and they perpetuate a problem that has gone on for thousands of years.
The moment you stop even thinking about people as belonging to a particular race or what have you is the moment racism stops.

Thats very through reply...however the response you recieved feels like a two wrongs situations.
Or more aking to saying "Hey Gasoline, stop this fire!"...and on the BSN forums no less.
Oh well so much for voicing opinions over one of many characters that got shafted due to shoddy writing or retcons.

you are the one who came on here spitting hate.....and no, i recognize and value diversity....how dull would life be w/o it? mass effect is a great example-on your squad u want a variety of abilities that each squaddie brings....in battke and for the dynamics and enhancement of the quality of the story....
but ultimately we all belong to one race, were all scarlet. we bleed the same color inside.....besides were all immigrants from africa if you eant to break it down.....

His first impression was pretty terrible, wasn't sure if I could trust him, and he never really convinced me otherwise throughout the rest of the game. It kinda bothers me that he's so chummy with Shepard in ME3, considering I barely knew the guy. After all he was never "big on forcing talks," he was a difficult character to really know.

your point is flawed.....a persons race is a part of what each individual is, part of what makes them who they are....the problem is when ppl start thinking that your race DEFINES who you are....its only one of many aspects, such as sex, religion, nationality, your own decisions and experiences.....
i think ppl more than ever do see a person before their color, but its ok to recognize the beauty of diversity......willfully ignoring knowledge isnt exactly prudent or intellegent.......the weapon is thought.....
