Lol...

I care about succesfully completing the match first and foremost. My ego is satisfied by knowing I actually helped during said match.

Besides, as many have pointed out, with the way the scoring system works, you can finish top and be a really bad teamate, while you can also finish last and be the true MVP.

I don't like to be 4th.

And 3th, only sometimes.

If I am playing a class I am comfortable with (vs. testing a new build) than I like being 2 or 3 on the scoreboard in gold PUGs. It means we will probably profit. If I am 4th it means I'm probably doing something wrong...

I used to, but now I play just to unwind.
Routine pew pews with bouts of internets between waves.

Majority of players usually cares about scores. Enen those who don't, still don't want to be the last.

More like you wouldn't want to be last by more than 50k from the #1.
If that happens its probably got more to do with:
-Afk(I do this fairly often when playing with housemates, gotta get food, they can handle a few waves).
-You used the eagle on a weapon class.

competition breeds results until you get people dying over stupid mistakes they normally wouldn't have made in hopes to get some extra points, followed by someone who's going to play hero and try and save them. Next thing you know you're down 2 people and the round just started.

I'd be fine with the idea of people satisfying their egos with the scoring system if the scoring system was a reliable indicator of what that person contributed to the team. However, there's no way around the fact that many beneficial actions don't actually reward you on the scoreboard and some detrimental actions actually do.

GodlessPaladin wrote...

It's actually DISTURBINGLY COMMON for me to score higher than the rest of my team combined.  Out of five GI games played tonight (I played another after I posted this thread), I scored higher than my whole team combined 3 times, and that's not unusual for me.  The divide is actually significantly wider if I actually go all out and use equipment.  :-\\

It's actually pretty frustrating.  I wish my teammates would help more.

Lol?

If you care about being # 1 your playing the wrong game. most of the people trying to be #1 are the idiots running around getting themselves downed or f@%^ing up respawns and getting their teams killed. You care about being # 1 so much go play COD. I'm here to help my team in any way possible. If your not for the team again your playing the wrong game. oh and the people who say I'm a liar can stuff it. I play Battlefield over COD because I believe winning as a team is more important than solo glory.

At first I didn't really care until I started playing as a Krogan Soldier, I always aim for first place but I'm not going to abandon the team in order to get there. When it comes to revives and objectives I'm always there, and when we're fighting I usually pick random people to back-up. Honestly I place 2nd most matches, with my chance of placing first or third about the same. I hardly end up in last and that's what really matters.

I'm with Tangster. If you think that you have to be number one everytime then try playing buy yourself and see how far you get. It's a team effort. The support players matter just as much as the the ones with the most kills. If you feel you have to be competitive in everything you do then you must have low self esteem. If your being competitive every once in awhile that's ok but being so competitive with everything you do really shows weakness in ppl.

You make it sound bigger than it is. Sure, I feel bad when it happens, but I'm not going to dwell on it. That doesn't mean I don't always want to rise to the top, and if I'm not being productive enough, improve myself.

If I didn't, I imagine I wouldn't have much fun in competitive games. Some sort of competitive element can be good, as someone said.

Only when I'm playing with friends. I don't know why but half my friends that play ME3 are competitive types and I easily get drawn into their goading.

The are several reasons why topping the charts is not important.

1 host benefits
2 class advantages
3 map type
4 enemy type
5 team make up

In my unknown unknown gold matches over a 4 match cycle I'll rank 1st through 4th. The only time I'm concerned about score is if I'm at the bottom and trail #2 & 3 by a large margin. Then I'll debrief myself in lobby. Why did this class build out fail so miserably against X on fb Y. How can I improve next time.

If all you focus is being number 1 your team will be hurt. However for me, I can easily tell this type of player due to their lack of maturity.

Selfish player = bad team Member = not on my friends list

Here we go again. The idiots who prefer points over teamwork are generalized with normal people who want to be the best. Competitive elements are healthy in games like this, as long as you don't make it a priority. Which I don't, I'll just feel good when I did good teamwork and did reasonably well.

Being a frequent engineer user and often playing on teams loaded w/ infiltrators I usually have no aspirations of being number one though it does happen occasionally. I get way more satisfaction from stripping an enemies shields w/ overload and then seeing them die immediately after from a teammate's head shot.

Being a highly competitive person, I do kind of care about being #1 on the scoreboard, but never enough to get angry about not being there after the game, nor do I ever waste 'rage rockets' to catch up in score. I do find myself checking my score all the time mid-game though.
