More importantly: why does everybody add their year of birth in their names?

The young celibrate their youth.

The old want the gravitas that their years deserve.

You'll find this everywhere.

actually I added my birth year because the Dynamik nick was already taken and 1st thing which came on my mind was my birth year

"Most of the times".

Nah, I don't think so. I'm sure you just saw some guys with that and assume that "most" do the same.

If you ever see a Spanish guy with "SP" or "ES"... it won't mean that "most spanish" do that.

This, how would you tell them apart from all the other Polish and Russian players that do NOT suffix their name?

I don't know, but it's nice when european hosts kindly label themselves so clearly, since my connection with europeans is completely unplayable.

This ! All the Czech people do this with few exceptions (like me, but I do have mCZ in my name but it has nothing to do with CZ).

It's pretty bad. Generally it does suck, though you care less and less about things sucking so it sucks less.

Aw great. So I can embrace coming into my 30's with a sense of 'it still sucks but you stop feeling it'

Awesome.

Personally I recommend never getting old.

I named myself SanTzu (the San are an indigenous people of South Africa, while Sun Tzu is a famous Japanese author). I kind of regret adding the za on the end, but that at least tells you that I have a terrible connection - 38 kb/s.

It saves us others the hassle of having to find out in game, and then leave. I can't stand it whenever I hear "ITS PKRSIO SKRCJHIS FASKCHTREIKA RUSSKI RUSSKI RUSSSKI RSSSSSSSKI" in my headset. Jesus, NOTHING makes me leave a game faster, no matter if it's post-credits wave 10 or not.

This I can guess since sometimes I do that too and the reason's simple, sometimes your nickname's taken and you have to add a number, year of birth's the first number that normally pops in your head.

I guess because name is already taken so they add that to show they are little bit nationalist.

I love it when I see an AU

Because thats exactly how an Ozzie would say it IRL.

"'Ay, YOU!"'

So its like we're saying hello to the world.

But what about the stereotypical "G'day, mate!"
:(

Everyone's nationalist when the chips are down.

Hell, imagine someone touching your kid.

Feel a little bit.. tribal? Want to destroy the outsider?

It's how we're wired as people.

no, no, no, hosting and lag can't be th reason, I can trace back the _PL _RUS habit back to Ogame, it seems there is a particular reason which I was unable to understand as of yet (except for the "nick was already taken" which in that case leads to the question of why nationality instead for instance year of birth)

Tribalism is the bane of humanity, I have said it many times and its various manifestations (football teams, nationalism, ethnicity, etc.)  do nowt to contrbute to our progress as a species.

It's in their names because they want you to believe  it really has a deeper meaning so you can make a useless forum topic about it.

I always wondered, I am for instance italian but I'd never add _ITA after my nick, polish and russian players instead appear to do that most of the times, is there any particular reason? Patriotism perhaps? Can any polish/russian player explain it to me?

I'm sure every country has people that do this. Then again, seeing your name, you don't have to put anything behind it to know where you're from. Same category of matureness!

You can't iron out tribalism. Billions upon billions have been spent in the pursuit of that.

You want some other species that isn't the human race if you want that to dissapear.

Now you can live in misery, or you can get into at least friendly competion. It's what we are into.

Nonsense. Short sighted and ignorant nonsense. Cultural differences should be celebrated, not eliminated. Without our tribalist nature, some of the most beautiful and spectacular events, traditions and celebrations would be long dead, and the world would be a sadder place for it. The downside to humanity's innate tribalism is not that it exists, but rather that it causes distrust of the unfamiliar. This is a small price to pay, though, because it also causes fascination and curiosity, two of the most significant driving forces behind our progress as a species.
