I stick my country after my name so people know where I'm from. Simple as that. I doubt a Russian, for example, wants to be playing a peer to peer shooter with someone from Australia.

This reason.

Being from SEA, I took a wait and see approach with D3 and its always-online gameplay. A lot of my friends are complaining of latency issues since the servers are in the US. Needless to say, I've decided not to get the game.

Thread hop:
I was wondering that myself, actually, considering that Origin is still unwieldy in terms of nickname changing. Have you considered that for many users it is a remnant of the old times, like an uncomfortable e-mail address because you got it when you were twelve and hadn't bothered to get a new one?

But yeah, on a grander scale, nationalism. It's still "us" and "them", still "soviets" and "capitalists" despite the fact that we've been living in what our government claims to be a market economy for over 20 years now. It's fueled by both sides, however, and isn't driven by any real reason.

Or the p2p matchmaking reason. Totally works, considering how our ISPs are not always friendly with out-of-the-country connections. It's less of  a problem than it was ten years ago, of course, but it's still a problem, and even the fastest internet access in Moscow can still get you awesomesauce lag if you're playing with a host from another continent.

I'd say that most of us, russians, who play multiplayer games, do know english, at least on a rudimentary level. However, i'd prefer them not to.

"Most" is, sadly, still not "all". That said, outside of my BF3 clanmates, I'm not even sure I ever managed to play a single game with an identifiable compatriot, even though I've been playing ME3 MP since the demo came out.

I mean, I've seen dozens of mic complaint threads specifically about Russian players, but the annoying foreign language guy in games I've played has usually been speaking in French, or Portuguese, or, in one case, I assumed it was Chinese.

Maybe it's my luck, I don't know =)

sometimes to let people know which region you are from to give a indicator of distance related ping.less distance = less lag Eg some people who play Dawn of War 2 Retribution will put their country/region in brackets after their name.

Well I am portuguese and we here do put PT on the end of our nick quite often aswell. It a way to identify someone from portugal because we are not many on internet land and hard to see one so we make sure we do not miss when it happens. But there are a lot of people that just to want stick out as a not-US citizen or english native speaker in general, since there are so many on the internet and you may be easly mistaked by one if you do not express otherwise. Its like a girl put it on the nick its female, it show that they want to be known for being a girl or not mistaked by a dude or the year of birth on the nick so you know they are not kids, for whatever good that does.

Also, as far as I know, an average Russian (~80%, I'd say) doesn't comfortably speak English, even though it's the most common foreign language to be taught in schools. (Please correct me if I'm wrong here!) So, adding the suffix is a good way to find those rare players you can actually talk to.
...
I recall seeing _JP and _HK players. And I don't feel any bad about it, vice versa - it could be a good topic to discuss during a game: say, I was on vacation in your country, or am planning to go and could use an advice, etc. Use it!

Yeah, that's why I said "comfortably". I.e. some can tell you that Geth Hunter's behind you, but most won't discuss with you any modern art trends, works of latest Nobel Prize nominees or even Bruce Willis' latest haircut. It's fine, I won't say a word in Mandarin or Japanese...

Well im russian and i can tell you some reason why some of us add RU or RUS in nicknames especially in games:
1 - To easy communication with ppl from Russia or from Ukraine and some rest countries.
2 - Patriotism.
3 - This one is going to most of names with tag of country - bcoz your nickname already taken so you just put something to your name. Some1 put country, some date of birth (i played with guy who have nickname ended with 2008, i hope its not date of birth lol), some put Real1 or something like this (like i do) and may rest things.

I know a dude from Cyprus that I usually play with. When we first played a match together, I thought the dude was from Russia, I was wrong and we ended up becoming good friends. Best GI with a Sniper in hand.

Then we should kick off ideologies too!

I mean, how many people died for those too?

Ideological adherents are also practising tribalism. All in-group/us/them thinking is. And I included those in the billions that have died for tribalism's sake.

To be fair - if people hadn't died through tribal/idealogical wars hundreds or thousands of years ago... it's not like they'd still be around now is it. That which doesn't kill me, merely postpones the inevitable and all that.

Tribalism is merely an extension of the family unit, and nationalism (and to some extent religious or polical affiliation) also, without which there would probably not be modern humans; an individual upright monkey is gonna have far less of a chance taking down a Mammoth for tea than a whole group of upright monkeys.

It allows for a better chance of raising young, passing on knowledge and eventually skills - for specialisation, if one guy is better at making really good mammoth-killing spears then his tribe will have a better chance of bringing home some tasty treats - and the spear maker can train his son, who has survived because the tribe has more food and better protection, and the skill continues and is improved upon.

This isn't even a human trait - there are many species in which family groups have developed their own specialisations, specialisations that are taught to the young and passed on - from lion prides that have learnt to deal with elephants to apes and even crows using tools.

Acutally, I never said it is "immature" to put nation suffixes after the name, I was just wondering about the reason behind that, you should blow off some steam though, you seem far too aggressive.

You got it all wrong people. I am from
Poland and the reason many of us add PL (excluding me, because I don't
feel the need) is because when we are playing online we are searching
for other polish players, it was encouraged by many polish websites
where people who work there were inviting their readers to play with
them in some online games like WoW, CoD itd.

This starts to be the kind of answers I was looking for.

Sometimes i hook up to games of my fellow compatriots and begin speaking some english nonsense, like "How do you do" or "Is this a multinational server?" I used to get tons of "Go 2 hill fut american". When i tried to play with cz/pl(don't really differentiate between them) i was rewarded with "Kurwa, Kurwa".

That's Polish for you. What's the czech lang. version of this?

In fact, _RU and _RUS in nicks are quite rare. I have only one friend with RU in his nick among ~100 xbox, ps3, and PC friends. Usually Russian guys imply their nationality in a different way, e.g. transliterating Cyrillic with Latin or using coincident symbols.

Ok, by re-reading my first post it seems unclear, but I meant that 10 years ago this habit was pretty common, and I found this employed by players of all countries. Just that the ones I saw the most, by far, were czech players.

I'm Polish and I would assume that most of people do the PL or RUS thing because their favourite nick was taken or simply they want to play with more Polski/Ruski people :)

Or maybe because the name was already taken, so they added their country.
That's why I did it :)

And this way I can use it everywhere ;)

Seen lot of country tags back in days when Deus Ex MP was the flavour af the week (and a GOTY). In ME3 - saw maybe 3 or 4 of those _PL folks. Never ran across any rude/vulgar one anyway.

Lots of NL tho. But silent and polite.
