I always wondered, I am for instance italian but I'd never add _ITA after my nick, polish and russian players instead appear to do that most of the times, is there any particular reason? Patriotism perhaps? Can any polish/russian player explain it to me?

First question: How do you notice someone is from Poland or Russia if there is no _RUS/_PL at the end of his nick?

Ok, now we know that you actually have no way of telling where somebody is from if he doesn't outright tell it via his nickname.

Second question: How do you know that the players you can actually recognize as coming from Poland or Russia are the majority of players from these countries?

So basically you've just seen someone with such a tag and then thought: "Well as this is the only Polish person who plays ME3 and he has this _PL in his nick, I can safely assume that the majority of players from Poland have these additions to their nicknames."

Plus there are a lot of people from different countries with these tags. I don't get it either. Maybe they like to talk in their mother tongue and therefore want to be noticed as being from xyz-country?

Russians and Poles are some of the most patriotic people on the earth.

That's why.

Go tell a second-generation Russian migrant that Russia is a ****hole. Count how many teeth you have left then report back to this thread.

Fortunately for me, my Russian friend watches the news and knows it's true.

I think the tag has more to do with the language they speak than patriotism.

So everybody likes the KGB is in rule in Russia. 80-90 %: of civil "servants" are from KGB or army backgrond.

They make every 20-30 year at least one revolution and one is on progress now. Does anything change - no. For more than 1000 years nothing has changed. Well - I take back one thing - Catherine the Great.

Well with PSN you can check other players profiles for languages they know. I think a lot of them put country/date of birth/lots of weird letters just because they can not have the name they actually want because it is all ready taken.

I consider myself quite the patriotic Pole, even if I am only half Polish.

Don't know why people put _PL at the end of their names, it's just cool I guess.

I think this, it's maybe also the reason we Dutch persons, put NL after the nick.
It can be a reason to "friend" people of the same country as you are.

Me Poland.
Me play Mass Effect.
Me want other Poland people from together. Play!

And srsly: the majority of online players are english speakers. And it's fun for you.
But us, Poles or Russians, would love to get into a lobby with our native speakers. It's just so much more easy to communicate in the heat of the battle.

I can only play ME when I have a spare hour or two. It's hard to build friendships over the console and even more difficult to build them with people from my country.
Adding _PL or _RUS (or using a nick that suggests one's nationality) helps a lot.
I do not use that trick, but I reckon it can be useful.

As much as I like listening to native english speakers, I'd love to play a match with only Poles in it. It would be much more comfortable and easy.

try to understand: we're the minority and we'd still like to enjoy a non-relevant chat between waves :)

cheers to all.:)

I'm in the same boat, I don't add PL to my tags but I sure do throw out a bit of Polish from time to time and see if anyone speaks it. Most of the time I just get a bunch of "what..."

Well, to be honest I don't need an _ITA to know you are italian...then I'll leave the lobby in panic, I don't want you talk to me with scratchy voice and kill me with a tommygun if I fail a hack.

Anyways, in Soviet Russia nickname add player after them.

EVERY country is a miserable rat-hole; every country but one:

The Glorious People's Democratic Socialist Republic Workers' Paradise of Korea!!!!! We have not relinquished our right to the lands held by the lackeys of the running dog capitalist imperialist American despotic terror-regime, and the day is soon when we sweep them and their lick-spittle lackeys into the ocean! The spirits of Great Leader and Dear Leader fill our hearts as we march into the glorious future of true socialist dynastic communism!!! Our Armies shall crush all opposition! Our scientists will astound the world! Our factories will produce many fine tractors and farm implements for the liberated peasants of the world!! Our propagandists shall use many exclamation points!!! Tremble, world, at the vision of our majesty!!!

[do I really need a sarc tag? no?]

Seriously, 'Hi!' to our international teammates! (I stole an exclamation point or two from the North Korean propaganda writers. Shhhhh don't tell them it was me).

I see this a lot on other games too, particularly Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Halo Reach.
Perhaps it's evolved into some kind of regional meme? Or a "follow the leader" trend? It just seems too widespread to be a personal preference all the time.

Same reason I've seen Brits put "UK" on everything.

Never seen an American with the Gamertag "Bob USA" but I've seen dozens upon dozens of Brits with "Bob UK" as their GT.

I am in fact russian and want to say some things:

- First off, people who spoke about Russian political situation in this thread, don't do it again, because everything you know from Mass Media is lies and propaganda (and ignorance born by them). I watch a lot of europian and US newsshows and, believe me, every ounce of truth is masked by the pound of lies.

- Secondly. I've never had anything like "rus" in my nicknames, but I would imagine that people do it to identify same-language speaking players. It is especially important for russian gamers (I can't speak about Poland) because they are a minority. Also very little percent of russians can speak, or even understand, English. Also Russian and Polish language are from different language family then most languages of Europe, and thats why it especially hard to communicate with 90% percent of gamers.

- and yeah, thete is a lot of bad taste "patriotism" in Russia, but not as much to explain this "rus" phenomena

That's because US players are a majority; majority doesn't need to differentiate itself from minorities, it's the other way around.

Yeah, our slavic comrades usually do seek out for a stronger integrity feeling amongst foreign communities.
