I'd just like to add something begging for a way to delete achievements from the server so I can restart fresh with them. I know that some are meant to exist across multiple playthroughs but I'd like to have a way to clean the slate.

I've done that before, it was one of the first things I thought of; it didn't work. I now have several files in my diagnostics that say things like 'Halrin1' instead of 'Halrin'.  And there are still excess files. I have 9 actual characters - but 20 (I think) characters in my diagnostics page all toting files with them.

Now that is a major pain - especially since I'd like to create more characters. And we've had not one single word on a fix that I'm aware of. I'd actually be significantly happier with "We can't fix it, it's totally broken" or "We're trying to fix it, but it'll probably take months" than the resounding silence we've got at the moment.

I can put up with bugged game endings and quests, slow updates, even the totally stupid more than one profile and I can't use my characters as an avatar (if I absolutely have to). But those files and not being able to delete them drives me totally up the wall.

The diagnostics page should have a link to the files (wherever the hell they are) that will let me get them and delete them - or even a big red 'purge' button that deletes everything. I would happily reupload each and every character if I could get rid of the damn files.

Edit: I just had a thought with the character with the same name thing. Maybe after that first failure I wasn't thorough enough with trying again - but I feared making the problem worse and ending up with even more files. I shall experiment.

This is unexpected. Were you able to determine if they still overrode old characters on the persona page? It's strange that one should distinguish between character IDs and another not.

But a purge function would be a welcome addition regardless.

Yes, the new character is there (with the old name) but now the files are proliferating. I'm trying again, more thoroughly. Just made a new Halrin. Waited for it to upload. Now two Halrin's in diagnostics, one with 1 file, the other with 4 (old and new respectively). Deleted the new Halrin. Then there are still two Halrins in diagnostics - one with 1 file, the other with 2 files.

I'm currently waiting for him to upload again. So that I can delete him again, etc etc. It could take days. But I suspect that I'll still end up with the same problem. And then, even if it worked, I'd have to do it with 9 other characters.

The nine characters that are current have 36 files between them. And I have about 16 screenies. But those unnecessary extra files (from 1 to 3) on 10 non-existent characters just use up way too much of the already limited online storage we have. If I make a new character, and I don't like them, and delete them, it'll only make the problem worse. That's why I'm not making any new characters until they damn well fix the problem.

And I refuse to delete the ones I've already got - I want them for the expansion.

I've done that before, it was one of the first things I thought of; it didn't work.

It's working for me, Susan, thought it's taking quite a bit of time. This is the procedure I'm using.

1. Create a new character with the name exactly as it appears on the diagnostics page.
2. Zoom through the opening dialog or whatever.
3. Fiddle with inventory a bit (unequip and re-equip armor, et cetera).

This step may not be necessary, but I do it anyway on the off chance it will inspire the game to upload.

4. Save the game manually.
5. Use the profile command to minimize the game, then check the diagnostics page.

Usually by this point the game will have uploaded some files for the character. If the diagnostics page shows that a Character XML file exists for the character in question, I go on to step 6. (It doesn't matter if any of the other files are missing.)

If the Character XML file hasn't been uploaded, I return to the game and continue playing that character (running around, accepting quests, fiddling with the inventory) and repeat steps 4 and 5 until the diagnostics page shows that a Character XML file exists for the character. It generally happens pretty quickly. Then I go on to step 6.

6. Return to the game and exit the current game.
7. Select the Load command, then Switch Characters.
8. Select the character just created and delete it.
9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for any other characters to be deleted from the site.

Regarding step 8: I tried Snoteye's suggestion to keep the character around in case the deletion doesn't work quite right, but found it's easier to just delete it at this point. It seems to me the game is more likely to upload the critical Character XML file right after a character is created. Getting the game to re-upload the Character XML file for an existing character can take quite a bit more effort and time. It's easiest just to zoom through the opening.

Also, deleting the character at this point eliminates any chance that the game will re-upload character data after I finally do manage to nuke all the characters files.

10. Quit the game.
11. Wait a while for the characters to appear on the profile page.

I've found it helps to use a second computer to access my player profile without logging in. This generally gets the site to synch up. (To do this, you need to enter the URL for your playerprofile.php page directly. Going through the "full profile" page will only get you an error.)

12. Once the characters to be deleted show up, go to the Manage Characters page.
13. Click the "Delete" button under a character.
14. Wait for the character to disappear. This can take a while.
15. Repeat steps 13 and 14 for any other characters to be deleted.
16. Open the diagnostics page and see how effective the deletions have been.

At this point, one of three things will have happened for each deleted character:

(A) The site will have deleted all files for the character in question.

This does happen, though not very often. If this does happen, rejoice! You're done with the character in question. It should not reappear on the site.

(B) The site will have deleted some of the files, but not the Character XML file.

This happens quite frequently. If it does, you don't have to recreate the character in the game (yet). You simply have to go back to step 11 and try deleting the character again. As long as there is a Character XML file for the character, it should show up on the site and give you the chance to use the Delete button.

© The site will have deleted some of the files including the Character XML file.

This happens very frequently, and is the biggest pain in the neck. When it does, you have to go back to step 1 and do it all over. Hopefully next time you'll get result (A) or (B). Hang in there.

Like I say, it does work, but it takes time. I started with five unwanted characters in my profile, and after a few days patient work, I've finally whittled them down to just two. The other three show no signs of coming back.

To summarize, this whole process can be broken up into two stages:

First, you use the game to make sure the site has a Character XML file for the unwanted character. It doesn't matter if the diagnostics page reports that other files are missing. Only the Character XML file is important.

Second, you use the Manage Characters page to delete all files for the character. It doesn't matter if you can't get rid of them all at once. The only thing that's important is that the Character XML must be one of the last files to go. The problem is, the effects the Delete button will have are very unpredictable.

I hope this helps. It'd be much easier if you could just take, say, a scythe to them, no? Image IPB

Then there are still two Halrins in diagnostics - one with 1 file, the other with 2 files.

Halrin1 would probably have been created because you created a Halrin when another Halrin already existed. This can happen if you create two characters with the same name in the game. Maybe it can also happen if you create a Halrin in the game when a CC-created Halrin already exists. I don't know about that though; as soon as I finally managed to upload my character and got my Lucky Ring, I uninstalled the CC and gave it no more thought. (In fact I've been trying to forget it ever happened.)

In order to get rid of the Halrin1 files, you'll have to use the procedure I described above, but create two Halrins and don't try to delete Halrin (assuming you want to) until you're sure you've deleted all files (including the Character XML) for Halrin1. The reason for this is if you manage to get result (A) for Halrin and result © for Halrin1, you'll just have to create Halrin again in order to create Halrin1 again.

It may help if you give both Halrins a different appearance, so you can be sure you're deleting Halrin1 and not Halrin. The order characters appear on the player profile page don't seem to bear any relationship to the order they're created in.

Update: I'd like to report that I just got rid of the last two of my five unwanted characters! I've got a blank slate!

Sir Snoteye, thank you so much for your advice! Without your kind words, the diagnostics page wouldn't have been nearly as useful as it has proved to be.

Thank you both Snoteye and Darth Midville. I had indeed tried the 'make another character with the same name trick'. My problems I noted above. But I was (a) not persistent enough and (B) didn't include all the steps Darth so painstakingly included.

I have spent the last 12 hours working on this - and now have 13 instead of 20 characters according to the diagnostic. So there are still 4 extras that don't exist, but I'm working on those right now.

I couldn't do everything you do Darth, I have a second computer but I can't be online with it while this one's online. So what has taken almost all of those 12 hours is waiting for the characters to appear so that I can delete them. The diagnostic updates almost instantly, but the characters don't appear for hoooooours.

So, 7 down, 4 to go. Thank you both once again.

Edit: Oh, and for anyone else trying this, make sure that the character has the same first and LAST name. So they must have the same origin. A couple of my characters were old enough i couldn't remember what origin I'd chosen for them, and it took several goes to get it right.

Ummm, sorry for the double post, but thought I wouldn't edit the other again. Darth, I think it would be wonderful if you could make a copy of your method posted here as a new topic "How to Delete Unwanted Characters and Files Permanently" or something, lol, and see if we can get it stickied. What do you think?

You're welcome.

Considering the currently suboptimal search functionality (although Google's index is rapidly growing), taking the process to a separate thread is not a bad idea.

As long as character.xml is intact, at least this information is available on the persona page.

Yah, mine wasn't. I had nothing to go on - just names with no character.xml. That's why I couldn't delete them, they weren't in 'manage characters' at all. Just on the diagnostics page. Which told me nothing.

Down to 3 excess characters now. And it has only taken 15 hours so far. Bugger!

Not ADD or even OCD, so much as I just didn't enjoy having those old half-baked characters hanging around. :P

I like the idea of being part of a community celebrating this great game, but if that means folks are likely to look at my profile I'd really rather it represented what I'm doing, rather than a bunch of aborted attempts with similar faces and names that never made it past Ostagar...

Oh, and I worked for years as a translator and writer of technical manuals, so when I set out to explain a process it just naturally ends up looking like that. Perhaps a touch of OCD there.

Occupational hazard, really. ;)

I've tried all of the suggestions posted previously and nothing has worked for me. Currently I have no characters listed and no updated stats since something like 12/10. My achievements do update however.

Do you think this might be a part of the problem:

When I log in from the game's main menu, I am unable to play the game. I get an error message that says I must be logged in to play due to my DLC. No problem playing after I log out...

Not sure if those two things are related or not, but I do get the error message you refer to every now and then. Not necessarily when I log in from the main menu, though; I have the game set up to log me in automatically whenever I launch it.

Sometimes I launch the game, it logs me in, and then I hit "Load Game" or whatever before the handshake is complete. That causes it to show me the DLC-related error message. Usually if I cancel the error message and wait two or three seconds, that gives the game time to finish the handshake and I can play the game with no problem. Have you tried that?

As for the issue of having no characters in your profile but seeing achievement updates, it seems to me that sort of thing could happen if you log out to play your characters. And it sounds like that's what you're doing.

If you are logged in you get an error about not being logged in? Like Darth Midville I, too, occasionally get the same error when resuming a save, but by the time I have cancelled the hickup is resolved. Nothing will upload if you are not logged in.

Some people have 20 characters uploaded and still complain. Thanks god what game at least upload something related to your chars. I have only TWO characters, and network still give me error 1000 and state what I don't have any character in on-line storage. I start thinking what this issue related to my hard drive, may be game store them in wrong place... I never seen anything what looks like game trying upload ANY data about them. May be I just don't have connection between game and character on-line storage? Of course, I logged in, always.

Have you checked to see if you have two profiles? I do - I didn't create two, I just have them. See if there is a link on your player profile page that says click here to view this user's other profiles. Click on it if you do.

This site uses one of my two profiles, which has no characters on it, and only the achievements I earned in the first week or two of playing. That is why I can't use an avatar, no pictures there.

My game, however, uploads all characters and data to the second profile.

Edit: Just a note to say I'm down to only one excess character now.

I seem to have a really weird problem. I have two different profiles for Dragon Age in my account:

Dragon Age Origins - PC (219064203)

Dragon Age Origins - PC (214914251)

One of those stopped updating around the 2009-11-08, and the other stopped updating just recently.

Yay, no more excess files and characters in diagnostics. Thanks to those who helped with that.

If you have more than one profile - read earlier posts in this thread.

If your profile is updating slowly or not at all - read earlier posts in this thread.

It's been dealt with before.

I've got the following errors from my only xbox 360 character:

1002 - No avatar image uploaded from the game to the on-line storage server.

1003 - No portrait image uploaded from the game to the on-line storage server.

Any ideas on how to resolve the errors and get his portrait to upload?
