I'm actually surprised to see a lot of Skyrim "LI" characters here. I mean, the relationship was pretty much, "hey, you're single? So am I! LET'S GET MARRIED!"
My mage married Onmund, an apprentice at the college of Winterhold. He left midway during the ceremony, and about three seconds later she destroyed her wedding ring to learn the enchantment. For the rest of the game, they barely talked to each other, except when she went back to the college to collect her money from the shop she was in no way helping out with. She also kept dropping his "homecooked meals" at his feet because she doesn't like pie.
I am such a romantic.
If there was a way to "Like" your post, I would have done so. Pretty much my impression on Skyrim "romances".
(Though I do understand the fascination with Vilkas.)
On topic: Garrus Vakarian and Triss Merigold.

Not sure why Visas is even considered a romance. You can max out her influence in the first conversation you have with her, then absolutely nothing happens until near the end of the game when she throws herself at your feet out of the blue (truth be told, exactly the same happens with the "love interests" in NWN2 + expansion).Cutlass Jack wrote...

Good choice. Visas Marr is awesome.
I probably would have liked her much more if I were actually romancing her when she tried to have sex with me. Instead of Handmaiden, who I spent the whole game flirting with. (Usually in my undergarments)
Obsidian pulled the same bit with NWN2, much to my annoyance.
The only thing that's interesting is the Handmaiden becoming jealous and even fighting Visas to the death over it (in the restored content).

Joint second favourites would be Jaheira from BG2 and Atton Rand from KotOR2. Alistair from DA:O, Annah from PS:T and Chloe Frazer from Uncharted 2 get honourable mentions

Triss Merigold.
Morrigan.
...
The more complex and in-depth, the better.
The less naive and/or emo, the better.

That man made me start gaming. Never played computer games before. Hubby got DA:O on a whim, after a few months I noticed that you could make a female character. Had no clue you could romance someone in the game and was completely blown away by it *swoon*
After that there was been many new interesting LI:s
Kaidan Alenko from ME, great LI
Samantha Traynor ME3, great LI
And other games.
Romancing Doc with my female JK in SWTOR was so much fun. Romantic rouge with a hidden heart of gold.

Lol I know this is the BSN but you peoPle need to play some games made by other people other than Bioware. I don't mean that a Bioware LI can't be your fav but 90% of you picked from them.
We ladies aren't exactly as spoiled for choice as you are. It's pretty much either
1) BioWare character
2) Ditzy airhead who needs to be rescued by Big Hero Man. (this one was especially popular in games that were available as I was growing up)
Sure, there are many exceptions, I quite liked the hero/Adele thing from Vandal Hearts II, mainly because it was just so complicated, and Nagamasa Azai/Oichi from Samurai Warriors 2 is delightfully historically inaccurate... but really, for me, characters like Alistair and Thane are just more alive and believable.

To me, two of the best-written video game characters ever.

They do characters better than just about anyone else in the business.
I certainly wouldn't pick anyone from a Bethesda game, for example. Bethesda characters are lifeless in comparison, as they focus more on the game world than the characters living in it.
