I'm not sure that there's a 'best' single class that remains consistent for all three games. There's a 'fun' class for each, but that's utterly subjective by any measure. For my part it's:

ME: Infiltrator - Sniper rifle with explosive rounds is a blast to play :)
ME2: Vanguard - Playing space pinball with mercs and collectors never gets old.
ME3: Engineer - Total domination of the battlefield with both CC and direct damage.

In any case, you really can't go wrong with any class as long as you spec out a good build.

I think Sentinel is the best across all three games. You get the best of both sets of powers, and have the most shields of any class. I play it as a kind of defensive mage/ debuffer and it is effective throughout the series. I am doing another run of all three games with this setup right now.

It depends on if you want consistency in playstyle or not. If so, I would advise adept or engineer, maybe the soldier.

The rest changed greatly between ME1 and ME2.

My favorite has to be the Sentinel. Effective with any team so you can bring whoever you want to any mission and you will not be at a disadvantage.

I played through all 3 as a solider first (the only other shooter I played before ME was Halo so it came natural). After playing ME2 and ME3 I've branched out a bit and have grown to love every class for very different reasons. You just have to decide how you want to play and who you want to bring with you. Do you just want cover fire, do you want squadmates to do combo's with, do you want to just kill everything on your own. These are all things to think about. Even with weapons you have to ask, can you snipe, do you mind getting in a Banshees or Atlas's face with a shotgun, do you like staying mid range with rifles. The one things I love about this game is the mix of play styles and how one weapon change can completely switch up how you play. Search your heart and you will find your class, after all there is no consequence or perks to changing or continuing a class from game to game (Bioware you boned us on that) so in the end it doesn't matter, just how you want to role.

I would agree that Sentinel is the most balanced and consistent across all three games.

My first 3-game character was an Infiltrator, which was lots of fun in ME1, but in ME2 and 3 I found there were fewer wide open areas from which to take the extremely long shot. Nothing like in ME1, where you can headshot a guy on a different mountain. Infiltrator is good, but you have no biotic powers whatsoever. Cloaking helps save your life.

My second 3-game character was a Vanguard, and it felt like it changed so drastically between ME1 and ME2/3. In ME2, it was extremely high risk/reward, since on Hardcore or harder, everything had shields and armor to worry about. You could almost never just Biotic Charge willy-nilly. In ME3, you can Biotic Charge anything you please and suffer no consequences. It's too powerful, too repetitive.

Sentinel is my 3rd playthrough. In ME1, they have decent guns and biotics and great tech. In ME2, they gain Tech Armor which is an amazing power and helps them get into firefights while still hurling biotics and tech. So much fun! In ME3, Tech Armor no longer explodes, but Biotic Explosions become very easy to set up. The ME3 Sentinel is almost a better Adept than the Adept is.

I'd recommend Sentinel because you get to experience all three sides of the Mass Effect combat system-- firefights, biotics, and tech powers-- and because the experience is so consistent across all three games.

Sentinel for ME2 and ME3
Max Tech Armor + Max Warp + Max Overload + Shotgun = Win.
I also used the warp ammo on my shotgun.

But to play all 3 games with 1 class i think the infiltrator is the best (imo) there are very good SR in all 3 the games

For ME1-3 as the same class, probably Sentinel.

In 1 you can get both Decryption and Electronics so you can bring whoever you want for squadmates instead of feeling like you need someone who can unlock stuff for you. That and Sentinel gets a bit of everything come 2 and 3.

For 2, I don't even need to explain it beyond saying that you should pick Energy Drain as a bonus power. Why you might ask? This is why. It's the reason I made a Sentinel:

For 3 a build I'm currently having fun with is sporting the Ariake Technologies armor set(40% melee damage) and going full melee damage in fitness with fortification as a bonus power, set to max damage reduction(except for rank 4, picked more melee damage so it can kill boss-mobs with melee for lulz), go full weight capacity and slap on a good AR and shotgun(am using Lancer and Pirahna with omni-blade on shotgun). Shoot stuff, dies pretty fast, melee stuff in your face or if you're feeling daring. With the 6A rank in Fitness + Fortification and Tech armor DR, stuff just tickles you even on insanity difficulty.

You might be wondering how the cooldown on abilities are with such a setup. With it I've got like a 3-4 seconds cooldown on warp and overload. Throw and Cryo Blast are still quite fast(picking bonus power in Offensive Mastery and reset cooldown on throw evolution helps a ton). Armor customization is entirely up to you but I'm having a blast with the Ariake Technologies armor set. That + omni blade on weapon + purging fortification = a *REALLY* hard-hitting heavy melee.

Yeah.  I don't complain because I like to see if I still agree with myself.

ME1: Vanguard w/singularity
ME2: Adept
ME3: All classes become extremely powerful. Hard to pinpoint the best by this game

It always surprised me how much people prefer the soldier class to the others. I never saw them as anything special really. Fun, yes, but not special. I play Mass Effect combat for the unique experience it gives. The soldier gives nothing unique in any of the games (unless you give him a bonus power).

just packing heavy artillery, adrenanline rush (ME2 and ME3) and have a bunch of ammo types and grenades. nothing special, nothing original.

Love the other classes. They bring a lot of fun, excitement, and a unique feel to the combat.

I can't play soldier all the way through. Not without a different character to change things up. People say Vanguard is just charge spam. But with shockwave and a bonus power like Reave, you can match an Adept for Biotic fun. Soldier is AR, shoot stuff. AR shoot stuff. Oh look, something with a barrier, concussive shot. Rinse, repeat. Very samey gameplay.

For me, the ultimate Mass Effect experience is the Sentinel with an Assault Rifle. He is consistently great across all three games, if you build him properly:
ME1: Choose the "Assault Rifles" bonus talent and evolve it to the maximum. Acquire the HMWA VII as soon as possible. No other weapons are needed.
ME2: Choose AP or Warp ammo as your bonus power, and preferably pick "Assault Rifles" on the Collector Cruiser. Having the Locust and the Mattock also helps.
ME3: A powerful Assault Rifle as your main weapon will do the job. Mine was a Particle Rifle with extended magazine and piercing mod. Evolving the squad version of squadmate's ammo powers also helps. Bonus power was Defense Matrix.
This is the only class that can deliver decent firepower and tons of biotic and tech attacks.

id say if you want a bit of tech and biotic go for a sentinel, i loved it in me3 and it was pretty good in me2 as well not sure about me1. other than that id say infiltrator

I'm actually doing a sentinel playthrough of the trilogy and it's a TON of fun so far. ME1 took some getting used to, but all the crowd control and damage afforded by the sentinel's abilities, along with the defensive nature of the class, give you huge survivability, damage, and battlefield dominance.

I'm currently playing through ME2 right now a bit at a time, and I've got to say sentinel goes great with any combination of squadmates. It's a ton of fun to strip protections away from enemies and watch garus/zaeed put one between their eyes to finish them, or pull them over edges with jacob and watch them fall to their deaths.

I did a playthrough of sentinel in ME3 last year shortly after the game came out, and it was a lot of fun then too, so all in all i recommend the sentinel highly for versatility and innovative playstyle.

Engineer and Infiltrator are my favorites. Engineer lets me create my own little army. In Mass Effect 2 and 3, when I have Tali on my team, it could be me + tali + third squadmate + combat drone + combat drone + defense drone + defense drone + (whenever there are synthetic enemies) geth + geth vs the enemy. That's a three person squad turned into a 10 person squad! Or even more if you also have dominate (though I think you can only get that by adding it via bonus powers.

Infiltrator will let me do that too, minus one combat and defense drone (or both without tali) but with the added benefit of the cloak which has saved my butt numerous times. Unfortunately, cloak doesn't exist in ME1

I take Drone as my bonus power as an ME3 infiltrator as well. Then take out EDI+decoy+Tali+drone(X2)+Shep+drone. Add in Hacked synths, and yeah. You can have more units on the board than the enemy. Plus cloaked kills. Good times.
