I understand that the game is harder but what exactly makes it harder in these modes? I want to understand as best as possible so I can plan accordingly.
For example:
* Your/squadmate weapons do less damage in absolute terms?
* Your/squadmate powers do less damage in absolute terms?
* Enemies have X% more health?
* Enemies have X% more barriers/armor/shields?
* More enemies are protected by shields/barriers/armor than in lower difficulties?
* There are more actual enemies that you have to defeat in each level?
* Powers have higher cooldowns?
* Enemies move faster/shoot faster/shoot more accurately?
I'd love as much specific information as possible if anyone knows.
This is the related information from the "game mechanics thread:
Shield gate is higher:
"There is a new mechanic for shields and barriers in ME3, which we call
the shield gate. Whenever an enemy shield/barrier is destroyed (last
point taken off), the rest of the damage that passes through to the
health/armor is cut by X%, where X is:
50% on Normal/Bronze
75% on Hardcore/Silver
100% on Insanity/Gold"
Power combos and noramized damage:
"power combos do what we call "normalized" damage, meaning they scale
with enemy health. So even on the hardest difficulty where enemies have
more health, the power combos still do the same % damage to the enemy."

The primary differences:
-100% shield gate: cannot kill shielded enemies in one shot
-enemies are more accurate and fire more frequently
-increased enemy health and shields - you have to stay out of cover longer to kill them, which combined with the above, leads to taking more damage
-increased damage taken: not sure what the actual multiplier is, but it only takes about two shots to bring down your shields
Weapon and power damage/cooldowns remain constant, but enemies have more health. The exact number and types of enemies stay the same afaik, but I've never played on anything but Insanity, so I'm not sure.
Insanity is not that difficult once you get the hang of it. You need to stay mobile (ME2 Insanity tactics will get you killed), and remain aware of where every single enemy is, since a single Cannibal or Assault Trooper can bring you to within an inch of you life in a matter of seconds if you are not paying attention. As long as you have good situational awareness, you shouldn't have too much difficulty once you learn the tricks.

Agreed with the above; personally I found ME2's Insanity to be much, much more challenging than ME3's. Maybe due to the fact that I was more spatially aware of my surroundings and squadmates, and that I played on Hardcore before Insanity. I also think playing a lot of MP Gold matches helped, because it teaches you to manage yourself effectively; in SP for me that translated to knowing my class' strengths and weaknesses better. I think the hardest parts of Insanity for me were Kai Leng and Marauder Shields, whereas on my first run, Priority: Earth and Grissom Academy were complete and awful nightmares lol.

Thanks for the information.
yeah, i had a really hard time with grissom academy... I died a bunch of times even on normal. Now that I've learned to pause and use teamate powers more its easier. Multiplayer is so different from sp because you cant pause in multiplayer.
