So after playing through Mass Effect 2 and 3 a few times now I want to move on to a different series of RPGS and I feel like Dragon Age will probably have the lowest learning curve out of the gate. I've heard iffy things as it pretains to Dragon Age II so for the time being I'm going to pick up DA:O  just to play it safe. The purpose of this thread should be obvious from the title. Is there anykind of deterant from buying this game pre-owned? I know a few BioWare games like Mass Effec 2 and 3 can't really function properly without being new, save buying passes or what not. Not sure if that is just an EA thing or what.

Oh and since I'm completely new to the series, what is some tips for my first playthrough? I'm going to be playing a dwarf as I their my favorite fantasy characters, but beyond that, I have no idea what I'll be doing. So. Tips on classes and origins for the dwarf? And just general tips on the game for a newbie would be helpful.

Thanks.

I've waited to see what anyone else might suggest. There is a complete forum on this site about character development you should visit. I have no knowledge about any pros or cons from your question about a pre-owned game version; you probably might do better using the forum for SITE problems, since that is the area most likely to give you trouble about the game ownership. Chances are good that the pattern you noted already for the ME games will be a general one.

There are walkthroughs in abundance, and a large DA-Wiki, so a great deal of what you are asking is out there. Given the age of DA: O (it will be three this coming fall), readership is down overall, plus this is a weekend, when things are always slow, and the time of year is after the gaming forums in general all seem to slow down, from May to October.

New copies of Dragon Age came with an extra character who also happens to be by far the most interesting party member. I think there may have been an expiration date on that offer and that maybe new copies no longer come with this DLC. I'm no Dragon Age expert so let's hope someone more knowledgeable reads this thread.

I would suggest buying the Ultimate Edition new. It will give you all of the DLC (some of which isn't all that great, but you definitely want Stone Prisoner). It generally sells for the same as the game by itself anyway. A used game runs the risk of being associated with someone else's user ID. EA can, and has in the past, fixed this for people, but it often involves multiple calls to tech support. Besides, at last check it was selling for roughly $20-25. That is pretty cheap for a really good game.

For your first run, if you are on a PC I suggest 1)fully patching it first, and two 2) considering the mods that fix bugs listed in the DAO PC help forum. It's one of my all time favorite games, but it is *buggy*. ZDF and MRP fix the majority of dialogue bugs so you get the story that was intended.

Both dwarf origins are very interesting, but dwarves in this universe bear little to no resemblance to dwarves in other fantasy worlds. I'm partial to the commoner origin, but both are well done and both are integrated into the rest of the story better than any other origin.

I see that Amazon is selling the Ultimate Edition for only $25.  That's a great deal and I hope you buy/bought Origins with this option.  I bought Origins about 4 months after it came out and it still cost me $60. plus I bought all the dlc (all of it) and Awakenings.  So I spent $132 on the experience.  You can have it all for $25.

I found the Dwarf noble the most hilarious out of all of the Origins.

Both dwarf origins are really good. It's actually worth it to play through both of them because they reference each other and it all fits very neatly. Each origin also gives you a unique perspective on an important decision later in the game (or perhaps it's more of a bias).

City elf and human Noble are very emotionally gripping origins that get you bloodthirsty from the start.

What I thought was really interesting was that even though you didn't pick a certain character for Origin they will still come up through your play through.  For instance, the Dwarven commoner's fate will be found in the The Carta's extermination quest.

The city elf's origin story was the best imo.  Especially from the female perspective.
